Jabra Evolve 75 Bluetooth Headset Repair Mic Not Working

I have some of these headsets to repair for a local call centre. These are quite expensive to replace and the call centre has a lot of them so they are well worth repairing. They are not difficult to fix, just a bit fiddly to work on.

I repair a lot of aviation headsets, most faults are broken wires which is usually the horrible litz wire, or microphone inserts that have corroded through moisture as these are placed close to the mouth. I usually buy cheap earphones and use the wires to repair the broken ones. Some of these aviation headsets cost in the region of £600 so worth repairing.

Thank you sir for the video. At 2:35 when it skips is giving me a lot of trouble. I'm trying the full range of angle up and down and left and right and its not unplugging the other side. Would appreciate any help. I'm afraid of applying more force.

Great effort Richard... in general Twisted Pairs are used for Balanced circuits and Coaxial wiring is used for Unbalanced circuits, as you correctly said for Noise reasons. A good compromise between do-ability and exactly the same repair. Yes it is possible that the Noise floor for the Microphone will be compromised but the readily available materials on an island and the delays in acquiring the exact same materials if even available is a constant source of innovation when it comes to field repairs, so well done Richard...

You may want to epoxy the mic tail to the PCB, so the wire bends farther up from the solder joint, and not near the solder joint, as you later said you would.

I think I would attach the extension cable to the veroboard first, before sticking it down, so there would be less soldering in a confined space. I hate fiddly jobs like this so I do as much as possible out in the open.

What I'm wondering is you showed the roll of wires with different colors, they all appeared to be of the same gauge, so why did you choose the yellow insulated wire over the red insulated wire when the existing wire was red?

I fixed a phone charging cord for someone. No microscope, just a magnifying glass. What a pain in the you know what.

Good workaround. Judging by the design, there may be many more requiring repairs so it may be worth pulling a completely new cable (assuming you can get a reel and the microphone insert pins are accessible).

I have the new Evolve2 75 which seems to exhibit similar issues with the mic losing connectivity over time. This is the second as the first was replaced under warranty. I hear they use a ribbon cable instead of a threaded cord to connect the mic to the circuit board in the housing. Have had a chance to look at one of those?

It seems such a poor design and happens so often, almost like planned obsolescence. I have had one for 3 years and it failed in this way 2 days ago, fortunately for me I retire tomorrow so I don't need the headset any more but it was annoying none the less.

You need a thinner tip.

No, he's a big part of the reason I switched from a skinny to a thick tip! When I saw his solder wick just soak up solder, I was amazed. Long and thin tips just don't hold enough heat: the wick cools down the tip. Shorter and thicker is a must for removing components. So now I keep 5 different $5 soldering irons with different tips.

@@SkippiiKai Same with me. I also now use a thicker tip for most jobs. Holds heat much better so don't have to hold it on the component as long. I will go to thinner tips only when the thicker ones won't physically fit. 👍
