Firstly Ashoka didn't renounce violence! He renounced war! There are Buddhist proofs itself which say he slaughtered Jain monks for clashing with Buddhists! Also Chandragupta maurya the grandfather of Ashoka was from a lower Varna ! Yet accepted as a king! The British and partly the society created the differences for which dharma can't be blamed!

I’ve read amply about Ashoka and no denying he did all those massacres even after his alleged conversion. But historians like Thapar take the good written about Ashoka with a pinch of salt (or a handful rather) while they take the negatives at face value. There is an undeniable bias: we don’t say that Alauddin Khilji built roads and tanks, but then any other ruler would have done the same. Historians appreciate the architectural legacies he left behind, same for any other ruler. But with Ashoka there is a deliberate attempt to just oppose the earlier narratives of him being generous. Pushyamitra Shunga ascended throne soon after the Mauryas, what is his legacy? We don’t see any milestone achievements there: so if Ashoka did leave behind an indelible achievement, it wouldn’t hurt to recognise it. And in the general course of development of the subcontinent, agriculture expanded and urbanisation spread after the Mauryan period, so post Mauryan period will definitely be more prosperous than the former. The international relations established by the Mauryas reaped dividends in the later centuries after their rule, when the converted Buddhist nations actively began seeking India for trade and cultural exchange, more so than older times. So the argument of Mauryan rule lacking prosperity is also very biased. And every ruler in history has walked a tightrope, even Akbar the Great known for his religious tolerance imposed and abolished Jiziya several times, and he even massacred Hindus during his siege of Chittor. That doesn’t mean I hate or love Akbar. He was a historical figure and I appreciate him only for his achievements. But some historians cannot do the same with Ashoka, simply because they feel Ashoka “the generous” represents a certain political narrative. No. There have been no ideal kings or queens anywhere in the past; but there certainly have been those who strived to attain and preach certain ideals of a utopian society, and that is the greatest legacy people like Ashoka leave behind.

To know about Ashoka you need to learn right from the beginning of Mauryas Dynasty, how Aacharya Chanakya and Chandragupt counter the Alexander invasion in Indian subcontinent . Their combined efforts make India as Akhand Bharatvarsh means United India. Then you know about the legacy Mauryas and Ashoka the great . One of the great emperors of all time.

fun fact :- Ashoka comes from the same place where both Jainism and Buddhism emerged! That place, my home used to be a big power center in the past! Buddha was born in Nepal but got enlightened in Magadh, the state of Ashoka! It also was a great educational center where ancient astronomy, astrology and many other topics were taught. And the invent of "0" happened there too along with many many other advancements. But the place is in shackles now.

This may have been much about the negatives but it's not fake. Kings those days were crazy, we can never idolize anyone from the history. Everyone has done wrongs, killed innocents, married more than one woman etc etc Every ruler or ruling country, which ruled India always had greed. They exploited us, but in some ways helped us too at the cost of that exploitation. The ideal ruler only exists in our holy books, like Shri Ram. Even Arjun when on a rampage to get Shri Krishna's sister nd Shri Krishn himself allowed that. We can't take that for good, not atleast in today's time. Just adopt nd preach nd follow the good from everywhere, for one aim.. Humanity.

Ashoka learnt many of his fighting skills from that tribe, infact ashoka's knowledge about the jungles and how to survive there, gave him an upper hand in one on one combat with his brothers.. Bindusara never hated Ashoka, but he didn't want to break the rule of making elder son the next King, but his love towards Ashoka and his mother and respect for his guru "Chanakyaa" made him a victim of the anger of his children and other wives and relatives, they planned his mother.. Did I just hear the video say he was a terrible terrible man?? He was one of the most efficient ruler of India. Infact his wife was a big supporter of Buddhism and so was his brother. His inclination to Buddhism simply didn’t happen seeing kalinga war. He treated the Buddhist leaders who came to his kingdom with at most respect and gave them lands to establish their religion just as he was respectful towards all religions. His hesitation to marry her wasn’t because of caste but because his ministers wanted him to marry a princes for the good of the kingdom. I have never heard anyone call king Ashoka , Ashoka the terrible. But when Kalinga war happened and he saw a mother with a child who gave him a piece of her mind saying the war was terrible. Jeez this is the most under researched video I have seen. He was called Ashoka the great not Ashoka the terrible. During his reign education, economy etc flourished. Both of them were just 2 different parts of Sanatan Dharma. Both of the people pray and study in the same temples and universities like Takshashila. I suggest everybody to read Ved Vyas Mahabharata. Or Mahabharata Unravelled by Ami Ganatra. There are lot of false narratives created by TV serials that Karna was discriminated or Suta is a "so called low caste" when in reality nothing like that existed in Mahabharata age of 5500 BCE Karna is not lower caste even if you want to look into that regard. First of all, Suta is anybody who was born to Kshtriya Father and Brahmin Mother. Suta community were a very important community who would be katha-vachaks (meaning narrators of itihas/history or stories in yagnas and big events of kingdoms) warriors, even kings, charioteers (and yes that doesn't mean that's an untouchable driver role. Shri Krishna was charioteer to Arjuna himself. They would guide the warriors, and have confidence and guide them as their advisors). So not at all was Karna lower caste. In fact the word or concept of caste didn't even exist in 5000 BCE when Mahabharata happened. The word as mentioned is "varna" meaning recognition through your skillsets not by birth. Karna himself was made King of Angdesh which shows clearly nobody gave a damn about what family varna you belonged to. Other misconceptions which dismantle this whole Suta community as someone from "lower caste" are - Maharani Sudasana and Keechak were both from Suta community but one was queen of King Virat of Matysa desh and his brother major commander of army. Other big examples are Queen Satyavati who was Shantanu's wife. Even though she was from Fisherman's community, there was nothing as so called low caste or high caste! The whole Ved Vyas Mahabharata that has come to us is through Ugrasava Sauti (Sauti meaning belonging to Sut) - he was given a big role to narrate Janameya the whole history of his ancestors, such was the importance of every varna in ancient Hindu Bharatvarsh. If they are really so low castes like as depicted falsely in tv series why would Karna be declared king, why would Satyavati be Kuru queen, why would King Virat take Sudhasena and Keechak as Queen and commander of army? Why would Ugrasava Sauti get a chance to narrate the whole history of Kuru kingdom to Rishis and royal kingdom?? Our ancient Indian society was very logical, believed in Saraswati and skills and followed dharma. The caste system is a creation of England, caste is not even a word in our revered scriptures, only mention of varna so that there is responsibility of different job roles done effectively in society according to skillsets (again not birth)

Earlier caste(varnas) was based on the karma of people but gradually it becames a birth - based system and people are bound to flow there caste rules( Earlier interchangeable varna system exists ). Most people blam British (as the confused Indian varna system with European caste system and thought that both are similar ( which is not )) for dividing people they increases these differences so that they can ruler india easily as local are busy in fighting each other. British are also blamed for creating caste hatred (people's of one caste hating other). Though things are changing but caste system still exists.

1st of all, there may always be different versions of the very same story. 2nd, this guy, whoever he may be, seems to be influenced by HISTORIANS who are more of politically motivated (Romila Thapar). It's funny to mention Romila Thapar wrotes about Md Ghazni in high regards, saying he only came to India to spread his religion and looted india 15+ times because he had to, because he needed money to save his city back home from contemporary Ghaznavi rulers. A higher secondary level history student can see through Romila Thapar's way of historical agenda. Anything that suits her agenda, is a propaganda. Not denying the fact that ashoka is much more than what's being taught, both in good and bad ways. But to see it from such HISTORIAN's eyes is not the right way to know about things, Jaby. There was a cast system available in the entire Indian Subcontinent. However, more than religion, this cast system was based on the type of work you choose to do for living, There were mainly 4 types of work cast. 1. Brahman represents upper intellectual jobs that include a high level of intelligence or knowledge. Considering current time, it's more like management jobs or more in science and technology along with religious practices. Known as job of creator. (I can debate on religious practice considering in this particular type) Example teachers, scientists, engineers, doctors, etc. 2. Kshatriya represents the job related to army or patriotism. Known as a job of protectors or destroyers. Example - King and army, fighters and warriors, etc. 3. Vaishya represents the job that provides entertainment to people or society. Example - theater actors, circuses, tournament organizations, prostitution, etc. 4. Shudra represents the most important job as cleaning up the kingdom or state or town or village. Job like labors, cleaners, slaves, etc. When Britain came to India, they did translation of many scripture, which, psychologically wrong, which later got imposed and released publicly having described in detail cast system based on religiously. Intentionally or unintentionally, it does impact very badly on Indian culture, and ever since Indian people started fighting based on this wrong education socially. Now, there were many people in India at that time who I consider guilty upon their silence or trying get personal benefit out of it. There are so many points that I can debate on, and I do know Jainism very closely along with Buddhism as a matter of personal beliefs, so I know the particular history since I was a child. Thanks.

Actually you're bit wrong here. Chandragupta didnt actually rule over the same land as ashoka, infact it was smaller as it was bindusara who expanded the empire more south and then Ashoka completed his kingdom by conquering kalinga. So Chandragupta who ruled over majority of the indian subcontinent, Bindusara then expanded the empire even more and then Ashoka completed his realm by conquering Kalinga. Bindusara was also a very strong leader but he doesn't get enough recognition which is obvious due to the stature of Chandragupta and Ashoka which is gigantic but he is only the leader other than Ashoka and chandragupta who was able to sustain akhand bharat and even expanded it.

What he presented is pretty accurate and supported by recent historical and archaeological findings. Caste system (initially in the form of Varna system) is at least 2600 year old and have been being followed rigidly for at least 1700 years. Caste system was not brought by Britishers. They just granted caste certificates to individuals which gave birth to a caste based political consciousness and identity called casteism.

Everything that exists within Buddhism has existed and still exists in Hinduism(core is Dharma, coated with numerous philosophies to choose from). But at that time many sects were created that emphasized some Hindu practices while rejecting others.(Jains, carvakas, etc including atheistic & nihilistic, hedonistic sects were permitted under the umbrella) They would have assemblies discussing the reasons for choosing such and such practices and the party that was convinced of the other's arguments usually would "convert"(more like adopting) to that particular set of philosophies. The biggest difference between Hindus at the time and Buddhists was the former's emphasis on rituals and the latter's emphasis on renunciation!(Later Buddhists would slowly but steadily readopt a lot of rituals & become less austere) However some of them became more exclusivist as they became popular, hence the conflicts that arose. The fact that Buddhists and Jains still exists in India after 2600years + and shared temples & deities in south-east asia is proof that they never really were at odds.

Yup, that's the true story of Ashok. He was already a Buddhist when he fought the battle of Kalinga. And yes, the point about Ashok Pillars and stone tablets is also true. The ones at Kalinga had a pretty different story compared to the rest. Now you might think, why would the Indian state lionize this person so much. The answer is simple and complex. Ashok (the new changed version) fits well with Gandhi's philosophy of non-violence. Gandhi wanted to disband the army thereby giving this impression to the world that India (especially the majority Hindus) is peace loving and would never pick up guns (even if it's a life & death situation). They didn't want to prop-up the warrior Ashok. Otherwise a similarly successful king - Lalitaditya Mukhtapid was wiped out from our history. The Buddhist Ashok is the true hero, the Hindu/Jain Lalitaditya isn't. Now u might say this a stupid & communal argument. But sadly, Buddhism has been used in India as a tool to discredit Hinduism. And that's the reality. I know it sounds quite complex, but for us who have studied these things closely, it's not that complex.

Caste system was prevalent in India since very long. Basically, as per Manu Smriti, a milestone treatise in Hinduism described 4 classes of people viz. Brahmin (learners and teachers, Kshatriya (worriers - most kings were in this class), Vaishya (traders and farmers) and Shudra (service people like cleaners etc,). This classification then was purely based on work they did. Later it turned weird as the nature of work they did ascended hereditary and they started known as caste system..
