He didn't mean that the writing was low concept or basic. I think everyone agrees that the brilliance of friends is in the writing and the way the characters interact. He meant that the premise was basic. "6 young adult friends figuring life out in NY". Pretty basic concept, that isn't demeaning it. some of the best shows/movies come from a simple concept like Piku, the office etc. All he's saying is that the concept isn't complex like that of Anurag Kashyap or Nolan's movies.

The free life of the friends was attractive to us Indians, despite the job struggles, relationship problems, and finances. Most of our parents wouldn't even let us leave the house freely especially with girls some do but alot don't, don't travel public transport it's not safe and don't go abroad to study who will take care of you, they're such helicopter parents that they will push for IIT(acceptance rate lower than Harvard and MIT) than let us go and learn to be independent, when school and college is over you have to worry if your parents are the arranged marriage mindset type and will pressure you like the other parents, friends was such a dream for us 🥰

The low concept thing was about how the show did not have any big complex concept to keep following it through out like DARK, or game of thrones. Bt just a simple concept of how friends goof around and life goes on. Unlike other complex shows, anyone could watch any random episode of any season in friends and enjoy what's going on in the show. There is a good Indian version of friends... It's a marathi show with the same concept of 6 friends living in Mumbai... It's called dil dosti duniyadari.. Other than taking the main concept the rest is changed to relate more to Indian audience.. It aired in 2015 i think and was really loved in Maharashtra atleast...

for the marriage thing, I get what you are saying about there being for ross to keep his marriage together and stuff, but other than slightly for rachel from her old friends, there wasn't really "pressure" for the women or men to get married or get married to a certain person/type of person. when seeing this from an indian audience perspective, especially 20 years ago, it would really have been seen as quite an idealistic and free sort of culture around marriage.
