Sarfaroshi ki tamanna and Mere rang de basanti are Talismans to many Indians. They are not just songs. They are our history. We wear them as badge of honour. They are perfectly placed in this movie. Same goes with Pagdi sambhal. And I'm not even a north Indian. I speak Kannada. You just don't understand Indian cinema. But thanks a lot for reviewing this movie. Indian freedom is much more than Gandhi. I am happy you're knowing more about our unsung heroes whose ideals were too lofty for the more celebrated freedom fighters to risk adopting. Our country would have been way different and way better had these unsung heroes got the power instead. In our school during history class discussions also, our teachers used to opine that Gandhi pulled India out of slavery, but only as a skeleton, that too divided. The freedom was never complete and unconditional and has resulted therefore in an ever-lasting pain of partition.

Chandrashekhar Azaad (Pandit Ji) was not shot in the garden. He shot himself in the head with the one bullet he always kept as spare with him. There is reason why he changed his last name to Azaad. Azaad means free, and he remained free even in his death. His name is a vow he had taken, and fulfilled. And about those songs at two 'sad' moments. You are again wrong, because of your inability to appreciate as the language is alien to you. But also because that singing their way to gallows is history. of course they did not do it with accompanying music. But that lyrics is something another comrade of theirs Ram Prasad Bismil - who had met the same fate as theirs few years ago - had penned. It's historical. So the imact.

Hi Jaby, just wanted to give u a small input regarding your issue with placing of SONGS specifically at two spots- Jail and during their hanging. Firstly those are not songs, they are POEMS that the freedom fighters used to recite to keep up the spirit, it was just presented as a song in the movie. What you saw is how they used to keep motivating each other through poetry, hence both of those poems (Songs in regards to movie) in the scenes hold extreme importance in our history and freedom struggle. Hope it helps

You chose the right movie Jaby. And honestly I didn't know that it was a box office fail untill you said it. I remember it being very appreciated and talked about when it was released. The point you made about Gandhi was absolutely true. In my belief Gandhi and co (Ahimsa team) were scared of Bhagat Singh's growing popularity. So, Gandhi didn't really care if Bhagat Singh was hanged. Bhagat Singh was so popular at that time that the British had to hang him a day early fearing the mob that'd be there to see Bhagat SIngh.

The first time the music actually enhanced the moment ,the lyrics "Sarfaroshi ki tamanna ab humare dil me hai, dekhna hai zor kitna bazue katil me hai" means, " We desire to beheaded for our nation, let's see how strong the enemies arms are." This song comes when British were forcing Bhagat Singh and others to feed to break their hunger strike, they overcame a breaking point. As for the end part, that song facilitated the moment of ultimate sacrifice, "Mera Rang de basanti Chola", " Basanti means Saffron, and the lines mean colour me saffron for I am ready my final debt. And Saffron in Indian culture is colour of ultimate sacrifice. This is what I interpreted from the movie, it's just about communication and difference of culture. Lyrics said so much all I cannot translate here,....If you say so I will. The after life thing, I think you'll find this info fascinating that Two different freedom fighters in a way mentors of Bhagat singh , namely Pandit Ram Prasad Bismil and Ashfaq ulla Khan who were friends were hanged by the British, it is said that when Ashfaq was to be hanged and asked if he had any final wishes he said , "Bismil had the luxury of getting a rebirth in his religion but being a muslim I don't, so my final wish would be that My god instead of giving me heaven gives me a rebirth as an Indian. All said in well being, no offence. Bhagat singh wrote a letter, an essay what ever you call it, titled "Why I am an Atheist." during his jail time, and the words written by him tell how farsighted the young man was, how educated he was and how conscious he was of himself and the scenario of nation not just in present but future as well. Even the movie "rang de basanti" which you reviewed used it because it used Bhagat Singh's theme. Bhagat Singh and Rang de Basanti are inseparable. You cannot separate one from the other.

I am follower of Bhagat I hate this fake history peddled all around .. he always wanted to be hanged to inspire Indian youth he refused to sign temp suspension of hostilities against British agreement which was last attempt by the governor to let him pass as civil servants were going on strike to hang him early .. all of freedom fighters were defended by team of lawyers appointed by congress.. for Bose Ina and Garam dal ..

First, a little about the history of the song itself. In the spring of 1927, one of the freedom fighters asked Ram Prasad 'Bismil' as to why doesn't he compose a song on the season of Basant (spring). That is when Bismil along with 18 other revolutionaries like Ashfaqullah Khan, Khatri, Thakur, Roshna, etc penned down 'Mera Rang De Basanti Chola'. Legend has it, that Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru sang this song on their way to the gallows. they raised few slogans. That is why that song is in the movie.

Hey jab!! around 7:40 you are talking about the music when they were taken for hanging, That is one of the most famous patriotic song that we sing and being an Indian viewer that song's lyrics were appropriate at that time. its ok if you found the timing of it weird. its not your fault.

Thank you for the wishes. I agree with many points of yours and also appreciate your passion for Indian Cinema. Bro, I think Gandhiji has been idolized more everywhere. He has been given more credit for freedom than deserved. Actually, not only He, his political party INC has been given more importance. You saw freedom fighter Azad ji, he also did very much for our freedom. Also, people like Subhash Chandra bose need real credit for Indian independence. For better understanding that being atheist, Bhagat Singh ji moved so much and did this much for us, I believe it's his intellect, Indian culture, country bond and environment of that period of time. Indian culture always gives you ways to be more rational. Whether you are aware or not, India and it's culture have been wrongly portrayed in past globally by the West just to portray Colonizers have done better for their colonies. I just wanna tell you that ancient Indian culture was way more scientific and harmonious than today.

Majority of the movie is factually correct..! N more on score..! We indians have been brought up with bollywood movies so v r more comfortable with this type of music..! It’s ingrained in us that whatever emotions u feel are amplified with music..! Whether it’s patriotic feelings or happy or sad or frightened... its just the style of Indian movies

4 Bhagat Singh movies released that year almost in the same month...and i had only watched this one and the bobby deol's ...but i must say this was the best movie among all of them. I remember watching it on theatre with my schoolmates because our whole school arranged this event on 15th august. Teachers took us to theatre...just to give us a brief knowledge about our indian history..struggles, sacrifices and independence. Till date... I can't forget the feeling i had coming out of theatre. I cried when Bhagat Singh died and I hated Gandhi whom i thought was a great decision maker. But he was not actually. Realisation hit me hard. Some movies come and go buy some stays in ur heart. This is one of them. @jaby @achara thank you so so so much for reminding my hidden patriotism for my country again. Love you.

It's not only Bhagat Singh, we call all three names together Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev. The freedom fighter gave life in the Park is Chandershekhar Azad aka Pandit Ji aka Azad means freeman, he was never caught up by britishers, he always carry a bullet with him so that he never get caught up alive, movie for sure will show things to get a bit more attraction but most are true in the terms we used to hear from our childhood and our fathers, like - that time it was like no black and indians are allowed, all three martyr sang song going towards hanging, their hunger strike for days, you can watch RANG DE BASANTI of Aamir Khan in the same context, the thing attracted us youth is that they gave life at such a young age, that maturity at 23 years of age, they chosed to die for the country, Bhagat Singh for youth is bigger inspiration than GANDHI. . . Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev and all unsung heroes. . . India is India because it had patriots like you... Sarfaroshi ki tammana ab hamare dil main hein, dekhna he zor kitna bajaue kaat

There were a lot things happened at the time of Bhagat Singh rebale. Which they didn't show .. And we have all this as our history so we all are grown up studying about our independence journey and evolve as Democratic country.... .infact if Gandhi Ji haven't sign the agreement , then may be India may have got freedom way to earlier, and Bhagat Singh would have been alive ..many ppl accuse Gandhi Ji for Bhagat Singh.. Death

Thank you for this video!! Thanks for you kind wishes.... Honestly, Gandhiji is remembered for spreading the freedom movement and the idea of indpendence among the rural masses. But he did a lot of collateral damage to maintain his popularity. He practiced quite some things like sleeping with girls to check his will for celibacy (allegedly) and he is considered the prime reason for the death/elimination of many freedom fighters who didnt agree with his ideology of non-violence. He is responsible for mixing religion and politics which is practiced in our country today. Experts in Indian history also alleges that if Gandhiji wanted, he could have prevented the partition of our country if he really wanted. There are lot of other reason for which Mahatma Gandhi is not regarded as a great person in our country and this point is debated by many in our country. If you ask me, Gandhiji was just one side of the story... to watch the other side, as a rouhh reference, this movie of Bhagat Singh and the ALT Balaji app web series "Bose : Dead / Alive" starring Raj Kumar Rao is a must watch.

At 7.30 when jaby says that the moment was not affective.. I just want to tell you that the song made more impact than the silence could ever make because of the lyrics and because you watch it with subtitles that's why that did not affect you so much ... But being someone who actually understands Hindi... It was a sad as well as proud moment because of that song and it's lyrics (especially because of the authentic hindi words used in it). But still appreciate you watching the movie and reviewing it and both of you look great wearing our national colours.

I would like to correct you jaby. I am sorry I am late at the review but I'd like to point you out that the song you were talking about which they sung in jail was a poem written by one of those freedom fighters while they were being tortured. In the book that was written by a British author who actually witnessed these, he quoted, I do not know how they muster all that courage to go through. In those hard times it was their poems and writings that kept them motivated. That sarfaroshi ki tammana in jail was written by Bismil azimabadi who was also a freedom fighter and further used by Ram Prasad Bismil as war cry during our struggle. Second song was rang de basanti chola which was also written by freedom fighter and it was the actual incident where Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru sang that song while they were being marched for their hanging. As far as I understood Bhagat Singh he did that to give a message to the people that my death is a victory and I do not regret my action and I would do them 100 more times if I have to for my motherland for saffron is the colour of sacrifice and highest honour. I think you'll figure out the rest. What I mean is it was really necessary in the scene because of its actual happening as well to show that these freedom fighters were more vulnerable in their actions before being freedom fighters but they didn't doubt it any further since their death is their glory and highest honour they could have achieved. 🙏

PLEASE READ THIS JABY Jaby and Achara firstly thank you both for reviewing this film. Bhagat Singh is a huge figure as you would now know not only for India as a whole to a great extent but he and the two friends who were also sent to the gallows are regarded as few of the many martyrs India has had. He is a huge figure in northern India especially in the state of Punjab. He is a hero for us Punjabis, if we're majority Sikh, Hindus, Christians or the minority Muslims in Punjab state he is a real Legend. The major factor being THE 3 WERE MARTYRED AT YOUNG AGES, HE WAS INTELLIGENT AND HAD BEEN VERY GOOD AT SCHOOL BY RECEIVING TOP MARKS AT SCHOOL BY TEACHERS WHO KNEW THAT THIS YOUNG BOY WAS VERY FOCUSED ON HIS STUDIES. WHAT CHANGED HIM WAS THE MASSACRE BY GENERAL DYAR AT JALIAN WALA BHAG IN PUNJAB, PLEASE RESEARCH THIS WHICH IS A TOTALLY DIFFERENT STORY FROM THIS AND OCCURRED WHEN BHAGAT WAS JUST A YOUNG SCHOOL BOY. THE 3 OF THEM LITERALLY WENT TO THEIR DEATHS SINGING THE SONG THEY WERE SINGING, PLEASE ALSO RESEARCH THIS TOO. BY RESEARCHING THESE 2 FACTORS YOU WILL GET A LITTLE MORE CLOSER TO UNDERSTANDING THE FIRE WHICH RAGED INSIDE HIM.
