Loved Jack Albertson in the short, but memorable role of the mail room clerk in "Miracle on 34th Street." When he said, "I didn't think I would be so moved," it reminded me of how many auditions, bit parts, disappointments and doubts an actor must endure to enjoy a moment like this.

Jack Albertson has been one of my favorite actors ever since I first say Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory. The fact that he won an Oscar a few years before making what could have been a trivial kid's movie is astounding. It shows that the great actors will flock to a great story, no matter what.

This was the first award. Perhaps that explains why we do not get a view of Massey and Cassel. Pat Neal told me Jack was so nervous she tried to sooth his nerves 0:44. Now we see the torture was extended by Frank reading the noms and then getting up and the banter. Watch the deep breath Jack takes 0:40. It was another richly deserved award after many years of struggle. His emotional acceptance is one of Oscar's finest moments.

I will always remember Jack Albertson from Willy Wonka which came out when I was 7. The original Poseidon Adventure and the sitcom Chico and the Man. When Jacks costar Freddie Prinze took his own life I think Freddie killed Jacks spirit as well. This was Patricia Neal’s comeback film. She had a massive stroke after winning Best Actress for HUD five years earlier. That’s her husband Author Ronald Dahl sitting next to her. If you wanted to know more about Patricia Neal’s struggles after her stroke British Actress Glenda Jackson played her in a TV movie called what else “The Patricia Neal Story. Costarring Dirk Bogarde as Ronald Dahl. One of only two movies Dirk Bogarde made in Hollywood. If my memory serves me. Chico And The Man was on Friday nights on NBC right after Sanford and Son.

+JSOMERSET994 JSOMERSET994 Agree 100% The Subject Was Roses had three equal leads (Patricia Neal, Martin Sheen, and Albertson) and nobody else. A contrived categorization, and therefore unfair to some other nominee. Albertson, though excellent, could never have won in the proper lead category, not in a year like that.

Look how laid back these things were. Plenty of empty seats & much more humble. A very dignified affair compared to today's all day fashion show. Movie stars didn't completely rule the day & those that did were well respected & appreciated. Compare the ceremony about "we saw your boobies" from a few years back & you can see what crap passes for entertainment these days.

Albertson was very deserving, however, Gene Wilder gave a world class performance in Brooks' The Producers opposite Zero Mostel. the fact that Patricia Neal was able to recover sufficiently from debilitating multiple strokes in 1964 to star in The Subject Was Roses and to be nominated for best actress is a testament to her character and perseverence.
