Just to clarify I do know Dempsey wasn't a defensive genius but I thought it was interesting to see someone effectively rolling and slipping even as far back as 1919 in his fight with Jess Willard. Dempsey truly was amazing!

If I recall correctly one of Tyson's favourite boxers was jack Dempsey, and cus da mato used to make Tyson watch and study all his fights. Because like Tyson, Dempsey was a small heavy weight, even by the standards of heavy weights in those days.

i think dempsey revolutionised boxing in many respects , that perpetual bobbing and weaving was pretty unique back then , i also love how he winds up square and then weaves back into orthodox position , if look close you can using that lead shoulder shell , a la mayweather/toney ..great stuff !

@lanzacash Truth all newer boxer would beat older boxers, since the newer boxers built there styles off of older boxers. The greatest boxer is Floyd Mayweather, only because he was born today with the knowledge of boxing history available to him. If these people were born in similar times it would be different. We can only be great because those before us were great. When it comes to who the best for their time though, Dempsey was eons ahead of the competition. Liston would win only because people like Dempsey made boxing progress. However for their times Dempsey was the better boxer, he forced the sport to become technical. No more being strong and punching hard. Because of Jack people had to become "boxers" and not fighters who just punched.

Boxing is 50% learning to avoid getting hit or getting hit hard. No such thing as a good chin. A good chin is nothing more than conditioning and making yourself hard to hit with a solid punch. Even Marciano and Tyson were always crouching and moving the head. My biggest complaint with boxing movies is how often a so called good boxer allows himself to get hit. The worst offender was Sylvester Stallone in his Rocky movies. In one of his movies he actually lets his opponent whack him repeatedly on the head while Rocky says "Ain't so bad! Ain't so bad!" Yeah right. Try that in a real fight!
@kappakappa45078 жыл бұрын
Louis King some try
@joep87878 жыл бұрын
Which is exactly what I said but I used the phrase "making yourself hard to hit with a solid punch". Conditioning is key. That's why first round knockouts are rare. I've seen many knockouts where the loser is awake but hasn't the strength to get up. You can be so exhausted in the late rounds of a fight that your leg and arm muscles are shaking. You get knocked down and you'll have trouble getting up, even if your mind is clear. The same boxer who when in superb shape could bounce back from a combination, is a totally different fighter if he steps into the ring and is out of shape. Compare for example Willard vs Johnson and Willard vs Dempsey. Same man, yet not the same man.
@cancerboii7 жыл бұрын
Louis King "you ain't so bad you ain't so bad" you realize he blocked all those punches right?
@joep87877 жыл бұрын
Yes, Clubber Lang hit Rocky's gloves which were next to his head. Rocky's head moved with each punch. Yes, Rocky's gloves took some of the steam out of those punches, but he was at the very least, distracted each time, unable to counterpunch. That was less intelligent than when earlier in the fight, Rocky was slipping and ducking Lang's punches. It's much more tiring to miss a punch than to land one. When you miss a punch, you're also off balance for a split second. If you're going to let your opponent punch himself out on your body, it's best to do it like Ali did against Foreman. Lean back on loose ropes, forcing the hitter to lean forward, thus robbing his punches of power.
@joeberger34417 жыл бұрын
Louis King I'm not disagreeing that letting yourself get hit is a good thing. It's really stupid. however, there absolutely is such a thing as having a good chin. some people naturally can take much harder shots than others. that doesn't mean they should rely on that. But it's there nevertheless.

I garentee you put him in with a Marven hagler or Jake lamota he would get his ass handed to him plain and simple. they dident come up with no padded record like him. they did it the hard way. lamota had to go through the whole division twice beating every top contender along the way and bein 10 years past his best before he even got a title shot. Ali in his prime would dance rings around any heavyweight that's out there today. you don't have the old school trainers any more now all you have is yes men afraid to tell the fighter what to do because of the money his geting. before the trainers were in charge the fighters were hungrier . you dident have the 17 weight class bullshit you have now , super this , super that , 4 belts and bitchen over money and contracts and fights fallen through. you think the guys out there now are fighting the best competition out there ? think again. now it's about less risk more Money catch weights for advantages and all other type of bullshit. you think fighters today are better? let me tell you something. compared to old school fighters of the past the fighters now are like faggots and that's bein brutally honest. Jack Dempsey was 13 and a half stone and take him as he is in his prime just teach him not to hit a opponent when there down and he would have annailated any heavyweight that's out there now including both klitchkos at there best . forget about the adjustment bullshit there's not much needs to be changed there atal. poeple have a misconception and think o its a cruiserweight and think of the gollywogs that's out there now with there upright stance, walking into shots in straight lines and not knowing how to fight on the inside parring a punch , headmovement ect. they fight one one way . hands up, stay back , move in a circle. Jack Dempsey was whole different animal , same with tyson who the fuck would last against Tyson with the crop that's out there now. and dont tell me antoney Joshua cause I'll tell you what antoney Joshua is .his another frank Bruno that's what he is. which Isent too bad atal but that's as far as his talent goes .

weight dosent mean too much against a Dempsey type fighter. you have to remember how explosive and a fast and aggressive starter Dempsey was and how good he was once got on the inside. he could land from all angles in there . tua was a more one dymentional , methodical , slow starter and also good on the inside but not quite as good or electric on the inside as a Dempsey. of course if tua lands early he will go for the kill but he'd have his hands full early against Jack Dempsey who be attacking from the go. we saw what he did to Willard who had a excellent chin and 65 pound weigh advantage and was 66 to demseys 61 . Dempsey just went through him. same with firpo who was a solid 220 very strong and durable guy who was supposed to have a excellent chin yet Dempsey went through him also. his proved he can destroy a far bigger man with ease. of course tua had a excellent chin but if Dempsey couldent knock him out he'd defo wear him down. you'd never know for sure but I think Dempsey has the advantage. his more of a dynamic fighter, a better combination puncher, a better inside fighter , he can match tuas power and has a excellent chin in his own right.

All boxers have good defensive moves. Tyson and Frazier may not have been dancers, but they were always bobbing and weaving, trying to avoid a direct hit. No one likes to take a direct shot. Even tough guys like Tyson and Foreman are made of the same stuff we all are. Hit them hard and they'll go down. The only difference is if they move well, even a hard punch won't land squarely and if they're in great shape, they can recover from a good punch.

Bob and weave , close the gap , stay on the inside it all depends on the fighter though . interesting question realy why do you ask?

Arco Iris Two of my all time favorites. Greatest fight in history

Arco Iris Dempsey ( he beat Jess up bad and Jess had some trouble besting Johnson so I think Dempsey could whip him)

Arco Iris Two greats: would have to go with Johnson, the bigger man

Dempsey is a bad matchup for Johnson, Dempsey's raw aggression and speed can get past almost any guard, and Johnson didn't have the chin to take dempsey to the late rounds where Johnson's stamina would take effect Dempsey by brutal mid round KO after a hard fight

It's a sparring session.

My guess is that it was Bill Tate, a regular in Dempsey's camps.

Dident arcel also say he belived demspey was the best heavyweight ever? I belive he said that . I agree with arcel he'd fucking annailate the crop that's out there out now. it be like puting a smaller yet tougher version of Mike tyson among them.
