What a strange way to see these two on their only (as far as I know) US tv appearance. And an interview too boot! I still remember seeing this when it originally aired and a bit shocked to hear Grant call out Steve for being depressed! Love Grant the most, but Steve is still alive making some of the best music of his career..very impressive and hope the Church tour US (via Denver) again soon. And very Happy Steve eventually kicked the habit Grant introduced him to,

Steve called out Grant for being depressed, not the other way around. :)

Thanks so much for uploading this!! It was on KZbin about 10 years ago and then disappeared. I never thought I'd see it again.

You're most welcome! Glad it brought back some good memories, and you get to enjoy the performance again. Thanks for the note of appreciation, too!

You really got me with this clip. I didn't know about this TV show (raymond's brother?) and i must admit i didn't know Grant McLennan and Steve Kilbey were under the name of "Jack Frost" even when i really like The Go-Betweens and also The Church, two of the greates Australian bands of the eighties if you ask me. Thanks.

Yes, this was from a short-lived program hosted by Rick Dees, on cable television, at the time. A few musical acts appeared on it, but the focus was comedy, so the hosts rarely had anything informed to talk to such guests about, unfortunately. Yes, that was the actor who played Raymond's brother, but he was the guest host, for that evening. Glad I found something unusual, that was a pleasant surprise for you ;)

"Are you the one from the Church?" No, but they'll be talking about my songs thousands of years after they've forgotten the Church. Rest in Peace, Great Man.

OK, it's 3 years on, but I think that's a bit silly. The Church is far superior and has far greater penetration globally.

@@hdmccart6735 It's unnecessary to run someone down in order to praise someone else. "Global penetration" is no measure of quality, there have been many great artists and songs that didn't get the recognition they deserved, whereas popularity is no guarantee of superiority. Marvel movies are testament to that. Grant, the Go-Be's and The Church are great and unique talents, I love them both and can't see why people insist on turning things into a horse race.

I hope you're wrong about that, Kilbey deserves his words to be remembered, dude at his best is easily up there with Dylan or Adrianne Lenker for me, which isn't necessarily to compare them in subject matter or style, but Steve has an absolutely poetic intellect, interweaving the mystical and mythological with the everyday business of living. The lyrics dance; just as playful as they are wry, and spoken with the silk of the mind which made them. Big respect (Not do diminish the work of the rest of The Church or his other collaborators, as each of those unions has shone in their own way, nor to lessen Grant: he deserves the legacy too, and I love many Go-Betweens works as I do many of Mclennan's solo songs and a good portion of Jack Frost itself) Either way if you love Mclennan and have written off Kilbey & The Church, I really hope you explore Priest = Aura, Heyday, Of Skins & Heart, The Blurred Crusade, and find the sonic nourishment there is to be had there and beyond. Cheers

Keep on the eye of Grant’s dear brother Robert Forster and Steve Kilbey. They just might collaborate in 2020 for a much needed reliving of what’s been done past and what’s getting paved ahead now, perhaps a slot at Fuji Rock 2020: www.smash-jpn.com www.fujirockfestival.com The combined strength and wealth of talent between Australia’s The Church and The Go-Betweens would be an epic lesson in humanity through lyrics and music. Let’s hope that happens as well as at Glastonbury, Coachella and Bonaroo.
