One of the best possible performances, with all the élan & fury, still finding space for contrast & detail. I heard Ronald Smith play this in public, very brilliantly, and this certainly matches it.

Learning this piece and repeating it as an exercise, will surely boost any pianist's stamina.
@luableah76158 жыл бұрын
I agree with you. You need that wrist strength. And dexterity for your fingers, obviously. Edit: Thanks for those 3 likes.
@calebhu63837 жыл бұрын
I can attest to this. Learning it at any velocity is a mountainous task but afterwards, rapid octaves will seem like child's play.

Chopin's etudes would probably feel like a breeze to anyone who could play this.

Does Le preux boost stamina as well? I'm about to attempt it.
@calebhu63834 жыл бұрын
@@morganmartinez8420 No. You need top level stamina or else you won't be able to learn it at all, especially the octaves and the tremolos.

In the still relatively young world of web videos, this is already a classic. Mr. Gibbons in this performance seems to fuse athletic physical energy and the bracing tonal fury of the composer's conception into a mystic unity.

I remember Jack Gibbons wonderful piano playing in the Sydney piano competition many years ago, I believe he was recovering from a back injury.The piano playing seemed then to convey that struggle but also revealed the tremendous determination and spirit we hear in this extraordinary performance.

am i the only one who finds 1:14 sooo weirrd but i still like it, alkan was such a genius
@QuoPacto7 жыл бұрын
It is beyond genius. Its mesmerizingly crazy and yet so fasinating I can barely put it into words. So creative.
@rosiefay72836 жыл бұрын
To be honest I think that the 1:14 section is a weak section in an otherwise compelling piece. Now I'll tell you a bit I find weird: 0:35. Seeing as the piece starts in F lydian, this bit makes you think Alkan's now in B locrian. He resolves onto a nice familiar G7 eventually, but what a weird way to get there.
@MrBrain46 жыл бұрын
As a person who has performed old vocal pieces in various modes, I find all of the sections very interesting, particularly due to the similarity in feel.

I always liked how Alkan uses this theme's rhythm at the end of op 39 no 10, looking at the score side by side make it obvious : octaves with thirds in contrepoint. It always makes me think of how Chopin uses the theme's rhythm of his op 25 no. 12 before the Coda of his fourth ballad. Both are re-exploring motifs from previous studies but to a much greater expressive effect.

There is a fascinating melody buried in the penultimate (triplets) section but I don't see how it could be brought out without supernatural intervention. Alkan has marked it but I think a third hand or second piano would help!

It just occurred to me that perhaps the triplet section with the octave melody (penultimate section) might have been possible on the pedalier, which Alkan was fond of.Fazioli have a double grand set up for this organ-pedal type piano apparently. Search Akan Benedictus Fazioli to see it.
