It's truly a great shame that Alkan is not recognizable as other composers. Throughout this entire performance, one can just hear strokes of genius scattered about. Some parts seems even way ahead of our time. Rest in peace Alkan. Thank you for such wonderful music.

I am not implying that it is a better performance (which, at such a high point, may be just a matter of taste, intentions and ideas from the pianist and of different technical abilities, but, if you haven't heard it yet, I personally find Vincenzo Maltempo's live performance of it absolutely stunning, with an incredible melodic clarity... gibbons made a comment along the lines that it's a bit sad that alkan is obscure compared to the bigger names but that's only because NO ONE WANTS TO PLAY IT! alkan's pieces are only made for superhumans like jack gibbons! this man is pure genius! the way his fingers move reminds me of a hummingbird. really wish i could see him live..
@SpaghettiToaster6 жыл бұрын
theslykit I don't really think that's the reason though. A lot of his pieces are very difficult yes, but so are th8se by Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, Beethoven, Bach, Ravel etc. And yes, some Alkan pieces are also quite awkwardly written, but none of the more famous ones, including this one for all I know... I think Alkan's obscurity comes in big part from his reclusive lifestyle and the lack of promotion for his music in his day and it deserves to be played more!

@JuanRamonSilva We can agree to disagree here. I very recently discovered Alkan's music and catchy is the very first word I'd use to describe it. yes, but that is just my opinion. I am not trying to take anything away from MAH because his performances are amazing but i like Jack's musical approach to the piece. The way i see it MAH's interpretations are more purely pianistic whereas Jack's are more orchestral in approach. I can hear the roar of a great orchestra in those massive chords and tremolo patterns. and Jack is amazing at contrasting the obviously orchestral parts, the "tutti's" if you will vs. the "solo's". Just what i hear.

@LongDriveChamp03 Pretty epic - I love how he uses the alternating hands, but still brings out a melody line. (It's details like this which come across so successfully in this amazing recording) But I think even more epic is the hand-to-hand cadenza which lets rip after those two mysterious chorales - 24.20 - 27.12. Three minutes of sheer madness!
