Another excellent show guys!! I'm a kiwi-expat based in Japan (been home for close to 30 years now). My full-time gig is a uni professor (multicultural/intercultural communication field) where I'm also the director of rugby for the uni club team in Nagoya, Aichi (home of TOYOTA VERBLITZ). During the RWC 2019, I took a research sabbatical and worked as the team liaison officer for Scotland till Japan put an end us moving forward..ah well. I'd be really interested to hear from Bryn about his first season in Japan, especially regarding the ins and outs of settling into life and playing rugby in Japan. I think it'd be really interesting for viewers as well as any players looking to come over here (and I'd say the numbers will only increase in the future) in terms of the communication style differences, cultural eye-openers etc. If you ever have time on the show to reflect on Bryn's insights, it'd be really interesting to listen to. Keep up the good work fellas. Always an awesome show to watch!!

Thanks for the pod this season lads. A hurting but not bitter Chiefs fan here, a couple of questions/thoughts. I keep hearing "the Chiefs discipline cost them", as a sort of 'rationale' behind the Crusaders winning. A technical question, do penalties that are given but are not paid get included in the game's penalty count? A follow-up (which might make that clearer). ALB goes off, 14 v 15, Chiefs first good attack into the Crusaders half. 16:46 pen adv Goodhue not rolling away, 17:05 new pen adv Taylor (?) hands in the ruck, 17:25 pen blown Taylor not supporting weight. A huge surge from the comps most explosive offence, smothered by infringements. Perhaps including these not blown penalties (if they aren't already counted, I'm not sure) makes the penalty count more balanced? But more importantly, no talking to the captain? This was not week 1, these were not rookies. Three penalties in 40 seconds on the try line in the 78th minute would have a man in the bin. This had a bigger impact on the game than the missed forward pass IMO. Your thoughts? This is where the ARs/TMO need to support the on-field more, I know the on-field is trying to own the game ahead of WC rankings etc, but to what end.
@Love1Monster Жыл бұрын
28:21 watching it live I thought the Crusaders got away with a huge amount of flopping, sealing off, whatever it’s called now, when they had possession. It wasn’t penalised at all. Presume it’s still illegal.

Agree with your thoughts on the refereeing, particularly James' point that refereeing is a team. The one problem I have is that we keep making moves to defer to the person in the middle even when they (and the ARs) have missed something obvious. The TMO is not allowed to call that forward pass, because a try wasn't scored within x phases of it happening. But the TMO is allowed to review the lineout offside purely because a try was scored. The distinction to me is too arbitrary and we need to allow the TMO to get involved and accept that with high def TV in our living rooms we will sometimes have a better view than the people on the field and use that technology to get the right decisions. That doesn't mean 2 minutes of slow motions and a committee; we should empower the TMO to make the call and have the on field referees accept it. Sometimes the balance will be wrong and they will get too involved, sometimes the TMO might make a mistake as well, but a forward pass like that is an easy thing to get right, Rugby just has decided that they won't allow the refereeing team to try.
@timhayward6833 Жыл бұрын
Yes couldn’t agree more, this looks so inconsistent to most viewers along with the endless very technical penalties at the breakdown. For a whole season where the Chiefs win two over the Crusaders and clearly top the league, to then lose the Championship on back of a couple of dodgy or inconsistent calls doesn’t feel right. I like the overseas football model where the league is home and away to everyone, no playoffs. Then separate cups are used for playoff competitions. The way we have a short season that mixes these two things is messy and allows these situations.
@JimmyKip Жыл бұрын
@@timhayward6833 Please don't misconstrue what i'm saying; I think its pretty clear that the Chiefs lost because they weren't able to adapt to the referee and minimise their penalty count. And remember some of those penalties aren't even referee interpretation problems - eg high tackles, one of which was (post judiciary) incorrectly given yellow instead of red. The forward pass was pivotal, and it could have swung the game, but all teams know that the way Rugby is refereed you'll have a call or two like that go against you in a game, that's something you can't control. What the Chiefs should have been able to control was their activities around the breakdown, they just didn't get it right.
@JimmyKip Жыл бұрын
@@timhayward6833 Oh I love the league / cup idea on paper, but the truth is we're pretty close to the red line on the number of games that's safe to play as it is, there's just not really a feasible way to play the number of rugby games required to make that work.
@timhayward6833 Жыл бұрын
@@JimmyKip Yep in that game you are right, the Chiefs largely shot themselves in the foot but...were still in it and those calls might've made a difference. So let the TMO adjudicate at any time. Over the three games the Chiefs were clearly better and that ends up counting for nothing, which feels crap which leads to the crowd frustration which is probably leading to people losing interest in the game. Also that every season the competition changes format, what teams are in it etc.

@k.o.t.h Жыл бұрын
Why aren't the ref n officials being held more accountable for their decisions esp. in such a crucial game. Seems like their errors are brushed aside n all is forgiven by just a half-hearted admittence to their mistakes. Not condoning the threats they received but that is a direct result of their actions when they were so heavily penalizing offences but let a blatent forward pass go which led to a try which was the difference in the end. If players are penalized for every mistake they make on the field then the officials should be held accountable for theirs as well, esp. with the tmo and technological assistance they have at their disposal now. Them not being held to the same standard is why they receive such abuse. Similar to the corrupt judging in boxing, their mistakes rob the players of the results of their hard work, sweat n blood throughout the whole season.
@mikescudder4621 Жыл бұрын
If we hold them accountable there won't be any refs left! Rugby is too complex... but a glaring forward pass like that was unacceptable, and that responsibility was probably more on the AR's than it was Ben but he's the one who cops it.

Reiko is a winger. His first instinct is to tuck the ball under one arm and go for the gap. 99% of his passes are offloads due to defences isolating him from his wingers or he dies with the ball. Defensively he relies on his speed rather than reading the situation. I’m not hating on him as I do see his potential as a world class midfielder but I think he has to change his mindset from me to we. Ben’s refereeing is exactly what you will get at the World Cup. If AB’s are not accurate and disciplined at the breakdown they will get carded off the field. Not to mention NZ’s desire to still tackle upright. ALB’s tackle will be instant red card at the World Cup.
@mikescudder4621 Жыл бұрын
Ben wasn´t consistent. There was a passage of play, 1st half, where Crusaders gave away 4-5 penalties in a row, 3 in the same phase of play inside their 22 (only 1 of these penalties were blown because he gave advantage), Ben didn´t even give a warning. 1 minute later down the other end of the field, the first penalty resulted in a yellow card as the Chiefs had already been warned. Don´t even mention that forward pass so influential on the game! I don´t think Ben was terrible but basic reffing errors are still a blight on the game.

This rugby format of a round robin league followed by playoffs is rubbish. The Chiefs were clearly the League winners and beat the Crusaders twice but then lose the whole Championship due to a couple of key moments in the final. League and Playoffs are different things and should not be mixed as the mature football leagues overseas show us. If you are going to do this then the TMO needs to be allowed to intervene at any time.

Again not a balanced view of the refs decisions. Between the forward pass and the Crusaders try the Chiefs cleared their line. But no comment on Jacobsen steal off Jordan at 21mins when his knees were clearly on ground prior. The Chiefs then score at 22 mins. That’s just rugby. Commentary needs to be more even handed about refs. The niggle in this case is because the Chiefs lost.
