This movie is fantastic! I had never heard of it but like Jack Hawkins so I thought I'dgive it a try. It is brilliantly written, eloquent, raise a great array of important issues in thought provoking and very articulate ways - the suspense in the mix of stories is tremendous. It also brought tears to my eyes - repeatedly! Wow! I am amazed I'd never heard of this before - it should be very well known! Thank you so much for posting it! Wow!

Jack Hawkins looks so much like my father in build, style, looks, character, charisma, and class. And in this role he's like a mirror image, and man of direction and focus..never loosing focus. No wonder I'm single... how many men are there like this. Not many. Dad taught himself 5 languages in order to communicate when overseas in the Army rose to Lt. Colonel by age 29 joining as an enlisted man. He could walk into a party, no one talking, all apparently bored, and immediately lighten the atmosphere and get everyone laughing within 30 minute!. He was amazing.

“Funny curious” that you should say that in compliment both to your Father and to Jack Hawkins, this greatly admired and appreciated actor, for my school form master also bore close physical resemblance to JH in build, facial aspect and in gruff manner too, when it suited him as well it did at times with our lot! Ex RAF officer, and during those quite hard post-war years where often schools closed and lessons cancelled because of extremely cold weather and lack of coal to heat the classrooms, he once had to deal with certain idiots who had cheeked him outside school and from afar on their bicycles, everyone using a bike in those days, including the teachers.. Unable to identify them but having his suspicions as to who they were in his form, our class, he challenged them to come forward to sort it out with him in a boxing ring, the pair of them whoever they were! [ Needless to say perhaps, none came forward to own up in some honour bound! But who could blame them for not doing so, so mindless of course in character judgement they were….Yet that said, aren’t we all guilty of some careless thoughtless misdemeanour in our youthful crass ignorance, the better we hopefully become after realising it…] On another occasion, such was his great gruff but sardonic wit, he made us all line up around the classroom walls after which he ordered us all to remove our shoes and socks his wit being there were some present who never washed their feet! Another of his methods was to deal with unruly elements by making them stand upright on their form seats, a sort of modernised version of plonking dunces face to classroom wall corners. He was also our English master and once when asked when he was going to teach us a foreign language his sharp and pertinent rejoinder was that would be when we had learned our English properly and by hell and Heaven we had some work to do! His name was Garfield Jones and a Welshman proud, later becoming a very close contender for the headmastership of our postwar Secondary Modern school, altho’ by some hook or crook he didn’t make it, but he certainly would have brought magnificent merit to that honour and position. He certainly became my favourite school teacher and to my everlasting modest inner pride when in my school report he wrote a pair of words apropos my transfer to his “A” stream class from hitherto “B” stream confirming it had been “fully justified”. On that day my heart was really big!

I like Jack Hawkins. I saw the same curtains in his front room just yesterday in another old British movie. They caught my eye because one was noticeably shorter than the other, and it was another Jack Hawkins movie that I watched. I like the flashback scenes in the court house. Thank you for posting this movie. I like the Alfred Hitchock music when the men were at the lake. So she lived. Good, but how very British of him. He should have hugged his wife when he walked up to her. Now we have to believe that their relationship will go on just as before and the wife will keep putting up with his absences. It was a good movie though.
@tommoncrieff11543 жыл бұрын
An interesting film with some terrific moments and an array of brilliant character actors led by the matchless Jack Hawkins. He personifies an age, an England and a type of man that no longer exist. The stand off at the end was obviously contrived but it allowed Jack to display his virtuosic talent. The little girl playing Jenny was completely natural and her one-on-one scene with Jack Hawkins was authentic and profoundly touching. An interesting mix of plot stories, you did actually wonder which would be the front page lead story and in the end it was not what you were expecting. Eva Bartok, Mrs Thorpe, was a controversial Hungarian actress, here with no lines! I loved Susan’s million-years-old mother with perfect Edwardian diction, she’s another quintessentially English type that’s gone with the wind. The only really dated thing is Susan’s total reliance on her husband for a life and a sense of purpose, she needed to go out on her own and start a woman’s magazine with articles on hot lunchtime affairs, continental breaks and handbags.

In many ways a lot of actors in those days seemed to play themselves, or at least a public perception of it as they always seemed to have the same persona. That included Jack Hawkins who gave the impression of a solid gentleman of great integrity. From what I have read about him, that would be a good definition of who he was.

If you are considering this movie here are my thoughts: This was a poignant movie. Not a happy movie. Not extensively depressing, but it does touch on death and the human condition, work, relationships, government, media, and asking existential questions. If you are up for that, then the acting is SUPERB, the director's choices spot on. And, if you enjoy history, very interesting to see life from the perspective of 1953.

This is a post war film making a story about the use of the atomic bombs that ended it and the role they are playing in the developing cold war...I think you meant 1953😁 although the poster says 1954 😁 it is a good film though. Not at all depressing.

What’s a redtop?
@TheGiantKillers3 жыл бұрын
@@grimtt Redtop was a term used to describe the group of UK newspapers known for their red top title logos who enjoyed their heyday in the 60s-90s. The best known of these being the Sun, Mirror and Star. They reported news but often did so with a sensationalist tone, and had a preference for salacious stories surrounding those in the public eye. Their methods and reportage was often questionable and unashamedly sleazy. Even posting photos of semi nude models with no actual news story associated to the pic. The Sun in particular was at one time famous for it's page 3 girl.

This was a wonderful film with 3 distinct aspects of humanity well addressed for any critical thinker with a soul something often addressed in films of the 1950's - 1960's.
