When I was a kid, this commercial sorta scared the crap out of me. He came off as a clown faced anarchist bent on revenge on those who wronged him. Now, he's probabily my favorite commercial mascot of all time.

I remember the original commercial back in 1977 when I was a kid and they blew up the Jack in the Box speaker. Then I didn't go to a Jack in the Box again until I moved to California in 1990. I lived on the east coast as a kid and I remember the horse meat or e coli whatever it was and there was no JitB in my family anymore. I was hesitant in going to JitB when I moved to Cali, but my brother ate there a lot because it was close to his condo. I got back into it big time. Then this commercial came out, and I loved it. But, there were many people who thought it was insensitive of JitB to run it because of 911. I believe the commercial even got banned. I actually wrote a letter to the JitB headquarters and commended them on bringing Jack back and that I understood the joke with blowing up the boardroom because I remembered the original commercial from 1977. I then received an envelope from Jack In The Box headquarters a couple of weeks later with coupons for free burgers, stickers and a letter that was supposed to be written by Jack himself, and it was the coolest thing ever to me at the time.

Actually, we're both wrong. It came out after the Trade Center parking garage bombing and everybody was in an uproar about it. I'm from New York and remember now that the 94 commercial got banned due to people being outraged because the trade center had been bombed. We're talking 20 years ago, so my memory was a little off. But I did get all the goodies from JITB when I defended the commercial to them.

Jax Plitt, the whole purpose of the commercial that the company is starting from fresh using the clown as an asset. Jack in the Box was in trouble in early 1994 after couple of children in Washington state and California died from eating Jack in the Box hamburgers. Now, Jack in the Box is the safest fast food chain in the country.

This commercial was after the 1993 e. Coli epidemic so they were at the brink of bankruptcy. They had to make many commercials like this to ensure the customers that things were different now and everything is better then before. And it WORKED YAY!! (I just found out about this so brainy bratty me decided to act smart and post this :|)

I remember when that happened. A bad supplier in combination with employees that undercooked the beef. Heat will kill e coli. But, the employees didn't cook it thorough enough. And a kid around my age was ended as a result. Bad luck and incompetence all around.

This was 1994? Really? Do the math on that one - very soon, Jack (the mascot) will have been back in circular rotation for longer than he was gone. The Controversy behind this ad was the scene of when Jack Blew up the Boardroom. The reason is that this commercial started to air in late 1994, In Between the 1993 WTC bombing and the OKC bombing in early 1995. I believe that this ad was pulled soon after the OKC Bombings due to the explosion at the end.
