Here I would like to share an interview that I recorded way back in 1987. That much loved Actor Jack Lemmon. He came to England in 1987 to be interviewed by the best interviewer Britain has ever produced Michael Parkinson. He talks about his wonderful career and has some great laughs along the way. Its the best interview I have ever seen on Jack. Later on there is a special guest, Jacks great friend and another great Actor Walter Matthau. A great show. Hope you enjoy.

Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau are two of the greatest screen actors ever. Both of them have the ability to play either very dramatic or very comedic. They are truly amazing together as well as apart.

Jack was such a great guy. One of my favorites. He and Walter were one of the best duos in film history. Jack was actually a good piano player too. He loved jazz and played quite well. Wouldn't you love to have had the opportunity to just sit with him, have a beer, and chat? Smart, pleasant, calm, warm.

Jack Lemmon was a perfect gentleman when describing the antics of Marylin Monroe. I agree with him because she had personal issues. The best role Jack had was the nuclear engineer in The China Syndrome. The dramatic role he played was flawless.

ALL interviewers should take heed of what made Michael Parkinson so exceptional at his profession: 1) he was well prepared 2) he asked excellent questions in a clear, concise manner 3) he then shut up and allowed his guests to answer them, WITHOUT interrupting constantly (UNlike Charlie Rose, David Letterman, Jay Leno and their successors, who seemed to never find a microphone they could resist).

Lemmon and Curtis were very pretty. Seriously (they were), Lemmon was gigantic on stage and on film, but leaves a gigantic hole still in his profession and our individual cinematic experience. He sadly cannot be replaced. An innovator, and a leader, and a universally respected and generous colleague is gone. And a very entertaining actor for us is still missing.

@@jec1ny Yes, and I'm pretty sure everyone has seen the bad effects of alcohol consumption (I had a glass of wine last night🙂) but I have no inclination to get drunk. In regard to alcohol, I watched a documentary about 35 years ago. It dealt with the crime and frustrations of people in a big eastern U.S. city. At the end of the program the police chief stated, in his opinion alcohol was something like the pressure release valve on a pressure cooker. He thought that, while too much alcohol caused real problems it also tended to keep major insurrections at bay so that his city didn't explode like a pressure cooker without a release valve.

For JONATHAN SUTCLIFFE: No, it's not you. Things are, indeed, blander than bland. Today's celeb cannot hold a candle to yesteryear's stars. Lemmon and Matthau were absolute geniuses and raconteurs extraordinaire. They could talk for hours and hours and barely scratch the surface of their rich and vibrant lives. The reason older interview pieces let the camera run on and on, is because they are well aware the subject of their interview can sustain 'a performance' without any hint of tedium. Today's celeb has nothing to say beyond the project they are working on. It's a very superficial sort of interview we get today - a snippet of this, a sound bite of that. Nothing for the heart or soul. Then again, I could say as much for the movies they are producing these days. No 'Apartment's' 'La Douce's' Hot's etc. The Odd Couple - the movie...does it get any better than this?!?
