Extraordinary. How a masterpiece was made. Genius.

"The futility of good intentions"--The futility of good intentions. Leading to do "As little as possible " in Chinatown because of the impenetrable culture. Thank you so much for that insight.

On another video a gentleman claimed Towne was the main force behind the movie this video bears out my intuition that it was Polanski that made the movie great. It was great. Very sad but still great.

@Anthony Danes: Yes, and the mediocre sequel, “The Two Jakes”, is an unfortunate demonstration of what happens when Polanski is taken out of the picture. Left to their own devices, Nicholson, Towne and Evans simply didn’t know what they were doing on that one, largely because of behind-the scenes drama: There was tension between Towne and Nicholson/Evans, and it didn’t help that Nicholson is not all that visually accomplished as a director himself. Polanski might have been able to make sense of “The Two Jakes” and turn it into a great film if only the budget had been high enough for all of them to go over to Europe and make it there with him, but sadly, we’ll never know.

Jerry Goldsmith deserves just as much credit as Polanski. Period. Just like the ending was a last minute change, so was the score.

Polanski did an amazing job with Chinatown, but Towne deserves as much credit. Polanski needs a good script in order to make a good movie, that's why What? and Pirates were such commercial and critical disappointments.

I believe Chinatown is best piece of writing, technically.

Many cosider it as the best script ever written, but Polanski came with the perfect ending that wasn't on the original script.

Había leído que fué co-guionista. Y que tuvieron diferencias creativas, sobre todo el final, al parecer quedó el final de polanski, porque el de towne no se entendía... según lo q leí.
