Jack Nicklaus - 2011 Honda Classic Interview

Jack is so accessible and so happy to talk it is tempting to take thoughtful and expansive interviews like this for granted. I think most fans would have been happy to listen to Jack for another hour. By the way it seems that he gets more and more contented the older he gets. Love the fact that he was unsure about when he first won at Baltusrol (40.55). But as Jack always says, "It's just a game." Thanks for fixing this, Scott.

I was a sophomore at Ohio State the year Jack won in 86. Next round I played out at OSU Scarlet course was particularly good. The emotional high that I got from just watching on television was incredible. I can't imagine what kind of emotional boost Tiger gets with the fans cheering him on in person. I can only imagine the feeling of incredible power one would get.

One more Jack story. After the 86 Masters, Jack came back to do a clinic at OSU Scarlet Course. It was the pro-am day where all the guys (Weiskopf, Sneed, Cook, etc) came back to do a fund raiser thing for Ohio State. Jack had drove up to the bag drop in a dark blue Pontiac Trans Am (Steve's car at the time). His clubs were sitting by the car and we all took a look. The irons had a clanky sound to them (leather grips and counter balanced in the grip area). On the back of the car was a bumper sticker that said "no fat chicks". Seeing Jack drive up in that car was priceless and mind you during a time when people didn't get so triggered by things. Funny story, 100% true. Jack pured the ball on the lower first tee during the clinic. The way the ball fell out of the sky a little left or right depending on what he was trying to do was subtle but next level.

A man for all of us to admire as he has done it all and yet lived his life as a compete gentleman as well as a man of honor. The question about who was the best ever is laughable to me. Jack won 18 MAJORS, and in his spare time came in SECOND another nineteen times. No one has ever come close to that and perhaps never will.
