Seeing this again makes me realize something that I didn't as a kid: Billy and Mandy were very lucky Grim fell victim to hubris and pride when they met him and got him to agree to a limbo game for Mr. Snuggles. If that weren't the case and Grim chose not to underestimate a couple of kids, they'd likely end up being friends with Jack O' Lantern with a common thread being ending up with worse lives as a result of trying to cheat death.

One thing I like about Jack’s backstory is that it does reference Jack Stingy, the reason why Jack-O-Lanterns are a Halloween tradition. Much like Jack, Stingy was a trickster whose restless spirit roamed the earth. Stingy was refused entrance into heaven and hell and we carve Jack-O-Lanterns to ward off his spirit.

Interesting. The story I was told relates to the sleepy hollow story. In the story the headless horseman hunts the night of Halloween in search of his head lost in the revolutionary War. Should an unlucky soul happen upon the horseman they would have to run to the nearest bridge or offer a pumpkin lantern with a face carved into it. Should a person do neither they will lose their head to the horseman.
@coltonwilliams4153 Жыл бұрын
@@brianljh8982 Not exactly. You see, Jack was slated to go to Hell, and the Devil himself went to collect. But Jack tricked the Devil into touching a tree that Jack promptly carved a cross into, trapping the Devil. Jack refused to let him go until he swore to never allow Jack into Hell. The deal was struck, and Jack was guaranteed to never be forced into Hell. The problem was, he was never going to get into Heaven, so when he was turned away at Heaven’s gates and sent to Hell’s gates, the Devil said that he couldn’t enter. So, the Devil took an ember from Hell, put it in a turnip, and sent Jack to wander the space between Heaven and Hell for eternity, with only the turnip lantern to light his way. The lantern got turned into a pumpkin later, probably because it’s easier to carve out and turn into a lanter than a turnip.

_The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy_ is one of those shows that makes you wonder "How did this get put on Air?" However, at the same time, it kinda also teaches us certain lessons. For example, Jack losing his life and his head is karma for tricking everyone he ever came across despite not actually being a bad person. Then, Grim ultimately causing Endsville to be taken over by Jack since he cut his head off is also karma. One legend goes that a man named Jack who was particularly fond of also playing tricks and messing with people's heads once got lost in the woods. While he was walking through the woods, he bumped into the Devil himself. When the Devil asked Jack why he was in the woods, Jack told him he was there to look for treasure (the reason he was there differs from story to story), but had gotten lost. The Devil said he could help Jack out of the woods, if in return he tells him where the treasure is. Jack of course thinking up a quick scheme for the Devil, agreed to his terms. So, the Devil made a Lantern for Jack using a candle that would never go out and a simple pumpkin growing in the woods. Afterwards, Jack pointed to the highest tree in the woods and told the Devil to climb it and he'd see the treasure. So, the Devil did. Now I'm not sure whether or not he saw the treasure, but when the Devil was all the way at the top, he had a problem climbing down and asked Jack for help. Jack mocked the Devil and said he fell for his joke, Jack began to leave but before he did, the Devil cursed him to forever walk the woods with his Jack O Lantern, which now if you see it's glow late one autmn night, something terrible will happen, Jack had become an omen.

@@snakefang1123 the version I like more is that Jack tricked the Devil twice within the course of two years. Once was the Tree making him promise to not claim his soul that year and he’d let the Devil climb down since Jack was holding a Cross to the Tree preventing him from climbing down. The next year the Devil tries again only for Jack to agree to go but requested one last drink after his drink at a pub he tell the Devil he has no money to pay it off and asked the Devil to turn into a coin so he could pay. The Devil agrees and Jack immediately pockets the Devil in the same pocket holding his cross. He forces the Devil to agree to NEVER claim his soul. Eventually Jack anger villagers with his scams and tricks and he gets his head cut off. He tries to enter Heaven but his soul is clouded with too much greed and selfishness to ever enter Heaven, Jack tries to enter Hell but the Devil denies entry because it was his deal to never claim his soul. Jack as a spirit is freezing eternally because he is unable to feel the warmth of Heaven or even Hell and begs the Devil for something to keep warm. The Devil gives him a single ember from Hell, because it’s an ember from Hell it will never go out but as it’s only an ember will never be enough to make him feel completely warm. Jack returns to his headless body and carves a face into a Pumpkin he puts the ember into the makeshift lantern to keep himself warm and light his way. This is also why we use Jack o Lanterns, because they act as a way to trick demons into keeping away from us because they think Jack lives there.

As I’ve read all across different cultures no god, goddess or immortals deity appreciates being medelled with or being the butt of the joke and the one that caused all the chaos learns their lesson at the hands of the immortal being they decided to mess with. Mandy: Endsville had a queen? I think she has a good point. If Endsville was a small village how did it have enough diplomatic power to have royalty? Wouldn’t royalty want to rule in bigger places?
@davidhong19343 жыл бұрын
Assuming this was colonial america, the queen was likely an English official or regional governor charged with overseeing the area. I know the Spanish let Peninsulares act as local governors based on pure Spanish background alone, so this woman may have had some level of noble background (existing aristocracy was more likely to get charters, after all).

While Jack wasn't a bad person, he did end up pissing off the entire town with his pranks. He should've at least expected some retaliation for his antics at some point. Also, even after being killed, he continued to toy with Death without any thoughts on what the repercussions would be. Did he think Grim would just laugh it off that someone stole his Scythe? The source of his power? If you ask me, him getting his head chopped off was his own fault. He screwed around with people on a daily basis for his own amusement, without any consideration or thoughts prior to doing so. At the end of the day, he's a prick who deserved everything that happened to him. Yet he claims to be the victim smh

As dark as this is, it’s not nearly as dark as the actual tale of Jack O’ Lantern. At least, not the Irish tale. Basically, Jack was a jerk. So much of one that Hell didn’t want him. Heaven wouldn’t take him, so he’s doomed to walk the earth forever with only a lantern to light his way. Hence, Jack of the Lantern, or Jack O’ Lantern The pumpkin thing was a way to ward him off, so I’m told

Here's the voice cast of those three: Richard Steven Horvitz as Billy. (also the voice of Kaos from the Skylanders games) Grey DeLisle as Mandy. (also the voice of Daphne Blake from Scooby-Doo) Greg Eagles as Grim. (also the voice of Crash Bandicoot's helpful witch doctor mask, Aku Aku, from Skylanders Imaginators) (P.S. for those wondering why I know this: I'm 23 years old, yet I have Asperger's (the weakest form of Autism) and thus, I tend to act more like a kid, watching cartoons (like the *original* Looney Tunes and Tom & Jerry) and playing games more than watching adult stuff) (Also, Jack getting stabbed in the back with a battleaxe by the knight (which didn't really creep me out, rather it was the casual way he pulled it out of his back with a carefree smile, that creeped me out), and then getting his head cut off by Grim, is pretty dark for a kid's show, heck, *I* even saw this when I was a kid and didn't fully understand the dark seriousness of those moments.)
