My dad used to run into him at a little Italian market near Eckley Village, PA - they'd both be in there buying the homemade kielbasa the place was famous for. They were both Ukrainians, and they'd talk and laugh about the old days. Dad said he was one of the nicest gentleman he'd ever met. RIP, Sirs.

His hired gunfighter role Jack Wilson, in Shane, was without doubt, the defining moment in any Holywood western. Mean, Menacing, and scared of no one. It was inevitable that the good character Shane, played by Alan Ladd had to triumph over evil, but that saloon scene. WOW

My mom didn't like Jack Palance for the longest time because of the characters he played but one day she saw him on an early 1970's talk show. It was a "theme" show which was popular and the theme was "macho male actors" At one point the host asked one of the other guests about their children and he said "I don't have much to do with the kids before they get to be a couple of years old because all they do before that is cry and fill up diapers" Each actor in turn said "yeah what he said....' until they got to Jack. Jack said "You guys are really missing out because you hold this baby and you cuddle them, and coo at them and you hug them and you sing to them and then one day the baby looks up at you and smiles and is really smiling at you and it is the most wonderful thing in the world" My mom decided she liked Jack Palance just fine.

Jack had such an easy comedic timing, but his greatest strength was as a super-menacing villain! I reckon it was great to see him joking it up with Leno so lightheartedly. He was the host of Ripley's Believe It Or Not for the first few seasons and he brought an air of class to what would otherwise have been a corny TV show. I couldn't get enough of him on that show and never missed an episode!

Scott Miller They came from vastly different backgrounds. Watch an episode of What's My Line - Johnny Carson as guest (he may have been once) but he was a panelist many times. Carson spent years honing his craft on many different daytime NYC game shows, etc. plus he really was an honest to goodness natural. Emcee extraordinaire, interviewer, panelist, comedian and the list goes on. Leno was strictly an experienced stand-up comedian although he was very quick witted and funny. However, there is a vast gulf between the two and their skills set. I doubt we'll see another natural like Carson who is also willing to pay his dues to be at the top of his field. Nobody wants to do that kind of internship today. They're for the most part lazy and want fame overnight. Case in point, all these The Voice or America's Got Talent shows. Even network TV has yielded it's desire to craft good programming to cable. The times they have a changed.
