After spending much of the previous season fighting relegation, Jack Ross’ St Mirren had made a promising start to their 2017/18 Scottish Championship campaign - but in Dundee United they faced a team that had won all three of their opening fixtures.
Both sides had early chances in the game, but it was 20-year-old Scotland Under-21 international Lewis Morgan who broke the deadlock for the Buddies, firing in from outside the box after 26 minutes. Defender Gregor Buchanan came close to adding a second before the break, but it took Morgan just three minutes of the second half before he doubled St Mirren’s lead, curling a shot into the bottom corner from the edge of the Dundee United area. To cap off his man-of-the-match performance, Morgan had a hand in the third too, setting up midfielder Ian McShane to seal the win with 12 minutes to play.
Here, Ross talks exclusively to The Coaches’ Voice about the tactical approach he took to the game - including why he opted for a system he’d never used before.
