The father is such an interesting case. He isn't an aggressor, not abusive in any obviously harsh way. His only real fault is how caught up with himself he is, but that's just the issue. Instead of a typical strong, caring father figure, we have the opposite: a man who plays the victim and is too insecure to care about anyone but himself.

To me the entire story centers around sight and narcissism, grandad is blind but believe the people on TV cares about him specifically, dad is to self centered to look away from his own reflection and the mother whos sight/mind is clouded by substance abuse declare that Claire is just like her, discarding the idea that she is herself responsible for anything.
@KingDragon-pv3oc Жыл бұрын
@@BlandTomtarOchTroll This story is definitely at its core is Claire wanting to be seen, seen as a person, as their child, but all she is "seen" as is nothing but a tool to help the family with their own problems. I disagree its a story centered on narcissism even if its a major theme of the dad as it only really applies to him. The Grandad is more Nihilistic if anything, believing that not even his own health really matters anymore. He much rather sit and wither away while contemplating how much things are better on TV. The Mother is more about self-pity talking down about herself refusing to even acknowledge her problems instead pretending the world wronged her acting as if she couldn't help that life's so terrible how she needs her precious little girl to pity her and take care of her. How Claire should understand as both of them are just Survivors

This is my favorite Jack Stauber song. Not only is the father's voice oddly comforting, I also find him to be the most sympathetic adult character in Opal. I'm not sure why, but I get the feeling he's also a victim of the mother's abuse and attempts to control his appearance to cope with it. Maybe it's because I've done similar things to feel like I have some sort of grip on my life. I'm not saying it justifies his neglect of Opal/Claire of course, but it does make sense.

He’s my favourite character in Opal. The father is such an interesting case to me. While yes along with all of Claire’s family, he’s an awful person and his actions shouldn’t be defended. I’m just looking at his actions and finding reasons for them. Out of all of Claire’s family he’s the only one which doesn’t physically scare Claire, the grandpa screaming at her and chasing her and the mother well, being the mother. The only time he gets up from his chair is when his mirrors are broken and he can’t look at himself anymore, and then I’m guessing tries to find out from the grandpa what happens. Next, “They turned me down now I live my nightmare” is an interesting lyric. Society rejected him, I’m guessing it’s because of his face, but it could be to do with his narcissistic behaviour that no one really liked him, but no matter the case he took it as society was calling his appearances ugly. So he put himself in this chamber, where he couldn’t see anyone else and could look at himself. Putting mirrors around him, trying to change his appearance (while arguably making it worse) so people like him more, basically. He only knows Claire’s there because of he can hear her walking. While he seems more friendly comparing to the others, he says everything in a friendly tone to disguise him putting down Claire. He puts sorry at the end of one of his sentences, whether that’s genuine or not I don’t think we’ll know, but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t. And it was apart of his narcissistic behaviour, so if Claire even bothered to argue with him he could argue back with that. His song is basically him complimenting himself, and insulting society. Basically, this song shows off a god complex, complimenting himself and only himself, trying to put into words how ‘amazing’ he is. So yeah that’s my analysis, a lot of this may either be inaccurate or a headcannon so yeah

I don’t think it’s narcissism, I think it’s more of brain damage and visual malformation. In the mothers song, there’s a scene of someone called 911, getting bashed multiple times, and becomes malformed. The person chasing the person calling 911 was the mother, and the other one was presumably the father. Seeing as it was the head he was bashed in, he probably got brain damage after how many times he got hit, making him think he’s ugly and that nobody likes him.

I feel like people are focused on making him seem like a better person than he is. I have a father like this, who focuses so much on his self and dwells on negative things an unhealthy amount. I do think that the father was a reject by society, but I do not think he deserves all the benefit of a doubt. He still makes Clair in secure and there is no excuse for that. The father focuses on himself and puts Clair down, he only says sorry so that if Clair tries to stand up for herself he can use it as a defense since it's what my dad and many narcissists(not all since its different for many people) do.

So we can all agree that Opal has one of the darkest and is one of the most ambitious projects Jack has ever created. You can interpret the songs however you wish, but they all have a reasonably significant meaning for the characters. Easy to breathe has a more literal one, where the grandpa has a hard time breathing as related to his addictions to cigarettes. The father, even if he isn't physically abusive towards Claire, he is still abusive towards her, where he is constantly belittling her appearance to uplift himself. He also says "You know how that makes me feel" Once Claire runs from him when she sees her grandfather. Which is outwardly blaming her for his emotions. He is narcissistic and insecure in his appearance and his emotions. Claire's mother. in her drunken stupor vented to Claire. And in doing so, revealed how she only sees Claire as a caretaker for her. And since this is the first time she's seen her in probably a few days, she says "You're being a person today?" and "You should really be more considerate honestly, but i forgive you" And then goes on to blame everyone and forgive them for things they didn't do. She's blaming her addictions on Claire's father and grandfather and also claire.

A detail I loved in the animation before this song plays is that while Opal is visibly scared of the Mother and Grandfather she doesn't look scared of the Father, she looks disgusted and disappointed, almost as if to some level she sympathises with the other two but can't find a single redeeming quality in him. Granted there are a few hints that during the Father's segment we're actually seeing things from his perspective (like his appearance in the mirrors) but I have doubts that Opal's reaction wasn't genuinely how she looked at him

To a degree... I'm a living representation of coding or reworking things out that don't fit/function right. The key is to accept/acknowledge the parts of your shadow self as opposed to ignoring or repressing the negative thought patterns you struggle with... And to ultimately acknowledge we/(you)/I deserve and need to better for the people we love. Nobody's perfect, forgive yourself and become better!

PSA: the father is just as abusive as the rest of Opal's family, just in a less obvious way. She tries to leave him before her grandfather comes and he stops her by saying that she treats him like a complete stranger. When the grandfather comes, he tells her not to leave and "you know how this makes me feel". In both cases, he guilts her into listening to his troubles. Both are classic examples of emotional abuse. The number of comments of people who sympathize with him concerns me
@3708j Жыл бұрын
I dont think the father was a narcissist to begin with, because the lyrics suggest there was a horrible event in his life that made him a narcissist in the first place. In the video Virtuous Cycle (the mom one) there was a scene where the father was shown running away from the mom while trying to call 911 and it ends with the mom bashing him to the ground and beating his face until he is disfigured that caused him to become solely focused on 'fixing himself' and becoming the narcissistic person he is.
@peanutgolds4058 Жыл бұрын
On the actual video of the movie I saw a theory that he was actually a decent guy/dad until this event, which makes it kinda sad if you take that theory into account. That also explains why Claire doesn’t run from her dad- he used to be a lot nicer.

Imagine how damaging the line "They turned me down, now I live my nightmare; got to be seen by someone out there" is to Claire. I'm assuming it's a high probability that Claire associates herself to the reason her father is living in a 'nightmare'; or the bare minimum has a low self-esteem after hearing that. Secondly, Claire is literally looking at him, though he is obstructed by mirrors, when he is asking someone to see him. A good mirroring (haha) from the Opal family saying 'we see you, Opal.' Claire is seeing everyone, but it is never reciprocated, and it is clouded by narcissism. The only reciprocation of what Claire needs is coming from a billboard advertisement.
@KeeperOfUntoldDreams Жыл бұрын
Also, during the bits when Claire is with her imaginary family there's clear focus/fixation on the dad, which seems (to me at least) that he's the one she wants to be seen by the most.

my theory on this song is that mirror man has suffered quite a lot of abuse from god knows who and got screwed up to the point where he has isolated himself from the world to fix himself and make him look perfect again and i’m saying this based off of two lyrics “they turned me down now i live my nightmare” and “now i sit here in reflection chamber fixing myself so that all can savor”
@bunnytailss2 жыл бұрын
in “virtuous cycle” (the moms song), it’s seen that she presumably tears off his face or at least messes it up really badly after he tried to call the cops on her. also, if you watched opal and slowed down the part where the mirror turns around, you can see that his face is a distorted version of what he saw in the mirror. as for “they turned me down now i live my nightmare”: i speculate that after the cops arrived at the home, he gave his statement but since male abuse is rarely heard of; the charges were dropped and he still has to live in the house with her. your theory is really good though ! ^_^

My headcanon is that Dad is a former actor/model who worked in a few commercials and ads, where he was hired for his handsome face. But then some incident involving Mom ended up disfiguring his face beyond repair, which resulted in the ad agencies to "turn him down", and so now he "lives his nightmare", I.E. being ugly. So now he spends his time in the reflection chamber desperately trying to make himself look good with makeup, shallow affirmations, and putting down everyone else around him.
@KeeperOfUntoldDreams Жыл бұрын
I think he and the mom (possibly) were both in the industry, possibly in magazines (perhaps they're the man and woman who were on the cover of one of the magazines shown at the start). Then mom got heavy into drugs and alcohol, and, between letting her looks go from the substance abuse, and attacking her husband, she would've lost her job as well. Actually that would ad yet another tragic layer to Claire fixating on the billboard. If her family was in the advertisement industry at one point, maybe that was when the family was at there happiest. She's not just daydreaming about a better life, she's longing for the past.
@yourlocalcactus Жыл бұрын
@@KeeperOfUntoldDreams If you don’t mind me adding to your theory, what if Opal was actually Claire’s older sister who was living the life that Claire had wanted, but she could only imagine because she wasn’t even born. Opal was told not to ever go to the house across the street, but she did and wound up not returning. Claire was trying to imagine whatever her older sister could’ve encountered, but she could only think of the horrible situation she was currently in. The loss of Opal was the downfall of the company, as well as the family’s mental stability.

The mirror man has the most of my sympathies because he can't control how he looks and his addiction is much more mediocre than the other 2 abusive characters in the family, with cigarettes and drugs. Jack Stauber made this the most unique character in Opal as instead of just making a character addicted to alcohol he was bothered to make a very specific and unique addict. 10/10 Character, Got attached as soon as I saw him because he was the only one who didn't immediately go crazy.
