For a long time, his performance as Sir William Gull was the only performance of his I had seen (didn't even know his name for years). Since then, I've seen him in My Left Foot, an early Pierce Brosnan film, Billy Budd and a couple of his television appearances. It's a shame he passed away so many years ago; may he rest in peace.

The interesting thing here is that Ray McAnally (obviously the actor doing William Gull/Jack the Ripper) may not have even known (at the time this scene was shot), that his character was Jack the Ripper. 4 fake endings were shot each with a different character being revealed as Jack the Ripper. (George Lusk, Inspector Statling, Chief Arnold, and Commissioner Warren) It's a good bet that these 4 fake endings were shot early on, and the real ending was not shot until the last possible moment. This probably made for a better film in that it could have made Michael Caine and Lewis Collins more emotionally frustrated in that they didn't know who was to be trusted, and who might actually be the killer.

After 25 years of research I think they could be right gull fits the profile a narcissist and suffered from what we now call dementia he was studying madness at the time of the murders trying to find out why he was going mad also why did the killings stop was gull secretly moved off to Islington mental asylum a bogus funeral was held to cover up the truth this is all here say but if the ripper was caught and was aaron kominski surely the public of Whitechapel would of known about it but being a high standing public figure it would bring the monarchy down so action had to be taken files disappeared case stamped unsolved and the way it will stay

I have loved this version of JTR since I first saw it on TV all those years ago. The casting was perfect and the production as a whole was opulent, to say the least. My only sadness is that, in the end, the powers-that-be decided that out of the 4 possible endings filmed, they chose Sir William as JTR. I say sad, because I really liked the character (courtesy of Ray McAnally's splendid portrayal) and I felt he was genuine in his desire to assist Abberline whilst cocking a snook at the 1880s medical profession. Ah well!!

Both Michael Caine's Jack the Ripper and Johnny Depp's Jack the Ripper films share a similar plot and chief suspect (Sir William Gull and the royal conspiracy) that originated in a book by Stephen Knight titled Jack the Ripper: The Final Solution. Unfortunately Knight's primary source of information later recanted his story (saying he told a "whopper" for fun) and subsequent research has picked apart the book. Good fiction, but not the final solution.

Totally agreed. It does make for excellent drama (both this and "From Hell" were brilliant) but it's rubbish history, from the idea of the Ripper walking around the busy streets of East End London in a top hat and cape to the way they mess about with Abberline (an alcoholic in the Caine one, a junkie in the Depp one). There is, needless to say, no evidence that Saucy Jack skulked through the dark corners of Whitechapel while wearing a very conspicuous and alluent attire, nor that Abberline was anything other than a decent, run-of-the-mill Victorian detective, and not some self-destructive visionary genius. Utimately however, I think the job of drama is not to present a totally accurate version of the facts, but rather to ignite interest in the subject matter, hopefully leading to the reading of books and a serious study of what actually happened. That certainly happened with me. I was 6 years old when this first came out, I have no idea why my mum let me watch it, but it did two things: scared the living crap out of me, and initiated a lifelong interest in the Ripper crimes and criminology in general.

Interesting what you say. Both this film and From Hell are really just, to a certain extent, copying Murder By Decree, which replaces Abberline with Sherlock Homes. Well worth watching if you get the chance. I totally agree with you about drama being used as a tool to ignite interest in the subject matter, but the thing to remember here is that in Victorian London prostitution was rife, particularly in the East End, one of the poorest parts of the city. People of wealth and influence frequently visited there to hire the services of prostitutes or 'rent boys.' That is a sad fact unfortunately. The Duke of Clarence, fourth in line to the throne at the time, was widely known to have frequented 'establishments' in Whitechapel. Of course, visits by these people generally always took place at night when it was dark, and the street lighting in the area was poor. As most of the prostitutes were chronic alcoholics, it was an easy way to feed their habit, as the locals were either poorly paid or unemployed.
