Damn Ocean Vuong's book "On earth we are briefly gorgeous" was the only book after "the man called ove" which made me cry like a mad woman. The ending, protagonist's love life, his relationship with his mother, the war going on. God it was so much misery to take from that book🥺😭❤️

I speak Spanish but am by absolutely no means fluent, so I have been trying to improve by reading Spanish books. Elena Knows was the first book that I read in Spanish where I wasn't just understanding it, but was appreciating the quality of the literature. There was an extended metaphor throughout the book of being like "a pod without seeds" to describe something being empty and useless and in that instance I feel that being a non native speaker actually added to that experience. I wasn't familiar with the words "un vaina sin semillas" before I read this book, so I had to spend extra time with the sentence and rollerdex in my mind through the different possible interpretations of those words to make sure I understood it correctly. When I got off the tram and walked to work that morning after the first time that metaphor is used I felt like I had been hit in the chest because it was so impactful. The quotation mark thing was an absolute pain in the ass though. I worked out after a while that there were no speech marks, but it was still hella confusing

My top author is Neil Gaiman. I will read (and re-read) literally anything he puts out, no matter what. I am absolutely obsessed and have two whole shelves in my bookcase dedicated to his books. I am also currently waiting for a package with more Gaiman books, and might have to start yet another Gaiman-shelf once they arrive…

No cause he literally published a poem in the form of a grocery list (it was an Amazon history list, i believe, but fair enough) in "Time is a Mother" and it was so moving and so profound in its expression of grief, like goodness i can't believe a grocery list made me sob.

Yes! All of these people are go-to authors for me too. I adore all of them. I am a massive fan of Japanese and Korean translated novels; so for me Sayaka Murata, Mieko Kawakami, Haruki Murakami and especially Han Kang are top favourite authors in that field for me to devour. Martin McInnes is an author whose books I can’t wait to read. I enjoyed his first two books, but In Ascension is the book that made him a go-to author for me, as I now can’t wait for the next novel he pens. As for Vietnamese authors, I adore Ocean Vuong sooo much, but I also love nguyễn phan quế mai. As for other poetry book authors, I absolutely love Alice Oswald and have read everything I can get my hands on. Other go-to authors I enjoy are Abraham Verghese, Orhan Pamuk, eka kurniawan, Elif Shafak and Juan Gabriel Vásquez.

I loved Claire Keegan anyway but I was very recently reading one of the Booker long listed books, Old God's Time by Sebastian Barry, and it made me appreciate Keegan's writing even more. Lots of people love Old God's Time but it just had me constantly thinking of how talented Keegan is that she can do so much with so few words/pages. And it's like you say, she just very gently leads us through these stories and leaves us with this emotional release at the end, in a way that even up to the last few pages you just don't expect.

@@jeeranko3359 Oooh, that's an interesting one. It's written in the form of a play, following a court session and at the end, the author kinda let's you decide the verdict, but also provides reasonig for both scenarios - setting the accused free or sentence him as guilty (according to German law). For a novel, I prefer "The Collini Case". But his (3) short story collections really hit different and his writing style is just raw and brilliant. I think in English they are called "Crime", "Guilt" and "Punishment".

Maggie Stiefvater. I had read Shiver a very long time ago and loved it, but didn't realize how magical she was until i read the Raven cycle. that universe (by extension, the dreamer trilogy) restarted my love for reading, as I stopped for awhile because I was always reading something for class and didn't have the energy or bandwidth for my own book. I was so busy in high school and I loved reading, but didn't do it often. her YA is written in an incredibly smart and adult understanding, it doesn't hold your hand, it doesn't feel like you're reading YA. she's moving onto writing adult fiction, and I am so fucking excited to see what she does. I haven't read all of her work yet, but I have a portion of what little bookcase I have dedicated to her work. absolutely stunning person, I love her so much. instant buy always

I only have one insta-buy author for me and it's Becky Albertalli. I do believe EVERYONE should read her books. She is truly amazing. Her writinv style is stunning. it's funny, poetic and lyrical at times, hopelessly romantic in every good sense of it, and literally if you want a romcom that's going to make you believe in love again, she's your gal. plus, she truly is for all tastes because she has het love stories(with in side characters one with heavy sapphic rep, one with important achillean rep, one I still dont know but it's about a interracial relationship), she has sapphic books and achillean books. she has standalones, and a duology, and a -verse that includes 4 books of which only two are actually directly correlated. It's truly for everyone and she's also just very sweet and kind as a person. She's also jewish and I'm yet to read a book of hers that doesn't have jewish rep which is something I absolutely love. Truly everything I know about Judaism is from her books and Cyrus in Andi Mack when I was a kid. And as a big girl, she always puts plus-size rep in her books(again, icon) which is so important and so missing. And so so so always done BEAUTIFULLY. I truly believe she's one of the greatest writers I ever encountered. And though I now hate the movie because it seems like it was done as a spit in the eye to the readers of the book, im thankful to who decided to make simon vs into a movie and to the person that revealed to me it was based on a book. Without those two people, I wouldn't have ever found my favourite author of all time.

One is out and I will get it this year Natalie Shapero is the same - havent picked up her first collection but the 2nd and 3rd are just amazing so will pick up whatever she releases Hannah Lowe - loved her 3 poetry collections, particularly the 2nd one but I would certainly jump to read her next poetry collection - easy to read but very memorable Junot Diaz - have read every fiction he has published and thinking of re-reading them all - but only 1 novel and 2 short story collections. He is not a fast writer and I dont think his health has been helping his writing. Not certain we will see anything else by him but I can hope James Ponti - I have been reading his books to my daughter and we have both been loving them. Very fun With Clare Keegan who you love in her 2nd collection of short stories the longest story there is about as long as either of her "novels" and well worth reading even if I do not like it as much as Foster ( havent read her other short novel) Lots of authors who would be hear but for them having written loads and me not got to all of their books yet

Ok. Highly underground taste🫢: Sally Rooney, Ocean Vuong, Haruki Murakami, James Baldwin, Virginia Woolf, Oscar Wilde, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Honestly, Jane Austen (the vibes). I did add Ocean Vuong just as I heard you say his name and I won't forgive myself for forgetting, he's been on my mind's desktop for the past 2 months. Club of geniuses. Also: Taylor Swift

Ocean Vuong, Jesmyn Ward, C Pam Zhang (I loved How Much of These Hills is Gold), and Brandon Taylor (although The Late Americans was a bit of a let down) I think Gabrielle Zevin now too.

I also love books that are about ordinary life that say extraordinary things! I’ll try any author that does this! It’s Just like the song “So Much Beauty in Dirt” by Modest Mouse. There’s beauty in every day life and the little things that we take for granted. And you don’t have to be rich to experience a rich life! I’ll definitely be picking up Panenka now!!! This sounds profound and what I need right now.
