Appropriate wardrobe. Haha. I've seen the meme where it suggests there is never a time to wear shorts to a gig unless you are Angus Young. Hahaha.

Great list kiddo! Have you played in "The Pit" for musicals. You talk about adapting to the music you're playing. That's what playing for musicals is all about. It's too bad there are a lot of really good guitar players but they don't read music well or at all. Some great opportunities to play a lot of different genres. All you talked about has direct application to playing in the pit.

Always play in tune! I played with a guy years ago who never had a tuner on his board. His guitar was always notoriously out of tune. It was driving me nuts at a gig, so I offered to let him plug into my tuner. He said “no this is my style”…it was our last show…

Haha amen. I’ve had great experiences letting folks that I trust use my gear, if they’re new to guitar, and eager to learn. On the other hand, of the two trashiest guys I know, one took a digger and smashed one of my guitars (right in front of me…still a painful memory), and one fell on hard times and sold the guitar I lent him to pay rent. Only one of those incidents was ever made right, and the guilt of taking money from a guy who didn’t have two nickels to rub together was maybe the worst part. He insisted though, so kudos to him. F the other guy…the gear and money are long gone and will remain so…

I was in a couple of cover bands in mid/late 70s when jobs grew on trees! It was impossible to manage 5 to 7 young adults between 19 to 25! No cell phones or email and miscues could kill you! Missed practices! Substance issues. The "I already know the set" types that dont want to practice. Even the serious guys started to have family and real paying job issues! It was all fun, but could never count on the income. Any long term successful band I see, I think about how much they got this stuff right and how much hard work made it happen.

When I play a guitar at my local Guitar Center, I don't plug into an amp, because I always assume everyone there's a better player than I. Makes me think of a line from "The Desiderata": "For always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself."

I play a mental trick and don’t call it practice. Instead I tell my wife that I’m going to go play guitar. I play every evening after dinner because I enjoy it. When I’m not in the mood to play, I make myself do it anyway. Many times those sessions are the most fun and rewarding.

6th thing you should NEVER do: play out of tune. Give your strings a chance to stretch before the gig and check yourself after the first song, and frequently thereafter. Another fundamental of professionalism. Oh and no one is goo good to practice: Jerry Garcia practiced six hours per day in his prime, when he wasn't on tour.

In his book Bruce Springsteen talks about giving Clarence Clemens nephew a shot at replacing him after his death. He showed up at the audition completely unprepared. He sent him away and told him to learn the material and that he’d get one more shot. If he weren’t Clarence’ nephew he would’ve blown his chance.

Know the song in a few other keys so you match the singer’s voice. Know the song and its intent, so you how and what to play over it when it’s your turn. Practice - learn your instrument and what it can do.

My unsolicited advice for worship team musicians is you do not need a Dusenberg or a Gretsch White Falcon or any other kind of guitar because guitars do not belong at mass you need an organ or if you're ultra based a harpsichord

@michelleneeds4165
@michelleneeds4165 Ай бұрын
If that volume is too loud for the stages you're playing then maybe get a smaller amp? I love valve amps too but in modern live music there is very little need for a Marshall full stack or even half stack besides visual appeal.
@michaelkarlsson5966

get an attenuator. It will help keep the volume down while keeping the amp working at its best :)

It's funny that you used Tom Brady as an example of how you can never be too good to practice because the first thing I thought of when you said you said don't ever think you're too good to practice was how Manny Ramirez used to hit off of a tee. I've only played guitar in the presence of other people a couple times in my life and I probably won't ever have much of a chance to do that again and I still practice because I think it's fun but if I was a professional I would almost feel obligated to practice no matter how good I got because I'd always want to give my audience as much value for their time and money as I possibly could. And it's a shame what happened to Andy Katzenmoyer's neck he would've been special

When in a shop and these geezers (owners) blasting amps at volumes I wanna leave... As geezers (shop owners) not listening to what you ask for (they got better margins on the stuff I do not want 😅). Geezers complaining about Boss and Fender (no complaining about Gibson since nobody carries them at proximity 😂).

Things you should NEVER do. Well, there is one thing you should never do, and that is: never listen to what another mediocre guitar player says. Heck, don't even listen what an old guitar hero tells you to not do. They all play by the book that's already been written, and we all are tired of that book. There is only one rule: Write your own book!

You are right ! Wright your own story . But we should listen ! We were given 2 ears and only 1 mouth . So we should listen twice as much as we speak . We never know when a seed gets planted! Everyone has something to teach .

You can write your own story but if you are in a band the purpose needs to be to make the band better not try to hijack the band as your showcase, unless they added you to be their show off lead soloist, which can be an appropriate role in SOME bands.
@michaelkarlsson5966
@michaelkarlsson5966 Ай бұрын
as you already know most books released today are reworkings of the same old classic stories that were around already in ancient times. So, yeah, write your own book but know that it isn't going to be new in any deep meaning but just another take on the same old classics.
