Jackfruit season in full swing!

G'day folks 🤠 Jackfruit season is in full swing and we picked, packed and sent away another consignment this week.
The cheeky things just keep flowering & fruiting and we need to control that to ensure good sized fruit.
Love this time of year, it's so exciting when we are harvesting the fruits of our labour 😊

We are on 7 acres, and because we keep our trees short to help protect them from cyclone damage, we are able to plant more trees per acre. At present, we have approximately 200 jackfruit trees, which we plan to increase to 500. We have 120 canistel trees. We plan on planting a third crop but have not yet decided which type of tree. Our plan was to focus on the 2 crops first and get to know their requirements.

I like your videos about Jackfruit. A quick question, I’m planning to grow a plant in my backyard. How do you prepare the soil before planting? Also how can I get all season variety? I heard jackfruit is seasonal fruit but there are also all season varieties available. Appreciate your hard work in the farm and in the same time entertain us.

We put some chicken manure in the hole, water in well, sprinkle some lime and then mulch well so the ground doesn't dry out.water once a week if needed for a couple of months to ensure its settled in. When they start fruiting they can produce a lot of fruit so we remove some just leaving a couple on the tree, we find with our trees by doing this they will produce more fruit later, that way we extend the season

Yes, young jackfruit is becoming more popular here, I believe it has significant growth potential as a crop.

It's a pleasure to see what you're doing that encourages us to farm. In my place, in Sri Lanka, it gets less sun. Mostly raining. That can be the reason that my jackfruit tree bears no flowers; it is about 24 months old. Should I use any chemical fertilizer? (I feed it with cow dung).

Yes, you can use chemical fertiliser. Also, some people will say it can take 4 years for their trees to start fruiting. This could be genetics or maybe climatic conditions.

The mower and trailer will work just fine guys, in situations like this I like to remember that the Egyptians built the pyramids without any mechanical equipment!!! We have things easy by comparison.

True that! Thanks Ivesy ☺️ There seems to be this thought in farming that the more tractors you have and the bigger your land, the more 'commercial' you are. We just like to think we're smart, and don't spend money if we don't need to 😆 We definitely have it easy, just think of cane farming years back when they cut by hand and transport was horse & cart! 🥵

I live near Lismore, and I have been scouring the shops for a jackfruit, but haven't been able to find any yet, where do you send yours to? My trees are all less than a year old, so it will be a while before we can eat our own home grown ones 😆

At present, our fruit is sent to Melbourne, trees can begin producing in 18 months or so.

At the moment they go to the Melbourne wholesale markets. As the farm expands we should be able to supply other states 😊
