Jackie is the GOAT of practical stunts and choreography. He imbues so much character and expression in his movement that it's insane. Never a boring frame when he does his thing. Glad these got good restorations through Criterion.

There's plenty of fantastic choreography in modern movies. FFS, where do you think they took their inspiration from? The problem is shitty editing and cinematography. Everyone wants tight, fast editing that obscures the action or that stupid ass slow-mo zach snyder shit that got popular with 300. Blame the audience, not the actors.
@Devilsblood4 жыл бұрын
@@Glassandcandy why would the audience want to sit through bad fight choreography? That's like blaming a guy for not knowing the milk went sour after drinking.

@@Glassandcandy yeah no, most actors don't have the years of physical training that jackie and his stunt team have. Hell most stunt doubles won't do what jackie does. yeah.... If you want to create something that will be remembered that's how you do it. 30 years later and no one has the speed, willingness and creativity to even match his talent let alone surpass him. Martial arts might not necessarily be spectacular, but the way he's depicting martial arts in his movies definitely makes them spectacular.... My favorite actor by far (I still have his best movies on my HDD and watch them whenever I'm in mood to see realistic and spectacular fights.... and I'm always in the mood for that, which is why I saved his movies and watch them at least 2-3 times a month)
@kyleday50265 жыл бұрын
@@blabla-rg7ky agree with everything u said but not about speed think that belongs to bruce lee also bruce lee inspired jackie to want to be different the opposite instead of being tough jackie would run away or if he got hit he would show it hurt instead also what do u mean by the way he despicts his martial arts
@blabla-rg7ky5 жыл бұрын
@@kyleday5026 I know that bruce lee has been his inspiration, but that doesn't mean that bruce lee is better. Ok, he may have been better - I don't know, and I don't care - but JC's fight scenes are always faster, more complex, and more spectacular than lee's. Lee's fights have been simplistic, whereas JC's are always complex. That's what I mean by "the way he's depicting martial arts". There are some punches and kicks in JC's movies that are just orgasmic to watch. One of them that I remember now is in the warehouse fight in the Twinkle Twinkle Lucky Stars movie, when Yuao Bien jumps from a crate and fakes a kick, and then immediately hits with the other. Unfortunately I don't have a link to show you this, but if you have (or have access to) the movie, just watch that scene and you will get my point. That fake kick, followed by a real kick scene is illustrative of a JC movie in my opinion. And there are more such spectacular scenes like this that I don't remember at the moment, but which I've never seen in Bruce Lee's movies. I think... Dragons Forever might have something similar... and also Wheels on Meals....
@kyleday50265 жыл бұрын
@@blabla-rg7ky i understand what your saying but im not comparing but bruce lees fights were simple because it was to do with his jkd and bring realism like in a real fight and his speed and power is unsuprassed even when slowing it down also and to not have a 5-10 minute fight but also in the movies he was always changing the fights and he was always honestly expressing himself it was more than just fight scenes there was deep coming from him. and if u want complex and someone whos willing to die in a movie go for jackie both amazing in there own way. bruce lee was the first person to show serious fighting in movies. and to change how asians are looked upon

I genuinely like a lot of Jackie's movies. Project A, Armor of God, Mr. Nice Guy, Who am I, etc. But Police Story 1&2 is undoubtedly the peak of his performance. And it's not only about his personal skills, but also about interhuman chemistry of his stunt team. I believe individual skills can be recreated and possibly surpassed, but the collective performance of people, who understand each other without saying a word is absolutely different level. You can feel it in Jackie's later movies, when he had to work with different stuntmen from different countries. His personal performance was still great, but team interaction with wasn't already as perfect as in 80s. The beauty of his "Hong Kong era" is fights looked like deadly fast moving full contact dance and I don't believe this style can be ever recreated. I fell very honored I grew up on movies like that.
