No he doesn't in real life. He said citizens in Hong Kong has too much freedom and didn't need democracy. He cheated on his wife. And got a woman pregnant. Then abandoned the woman and the child. He got drunk at shows in Taiwan a insulted the crowd. He pretended he didn't hear about the 3 months long prettiest in HK where students, civilians and reporters, were beaten and killed and attacked by the police and triads for the ccp. He is a coward who begs for money at Xis scrap table.

Funny how white people always talk about "culture" instead of "identity," maybe because America, Australia, etc. were robbed from the natives. Even though I'm born in the US and my father in Taiwan, we all know we're Chinese. White people call themselves Americans because they're born in the US, so is a person born on a pile of gold better than being born on sh1t?

@@asianamericancasestudies6434 I think culture and identity are interchangeable when discussing one's nationality which Jackie is doing here. I see nothing inherently wrong with that guy's statement. Being a Cbc diaspora myself, I identify with nationality first ie I'm Canadian. As US is a melting pot, it's more convenient to identify with nationality/birth place. This of cos is a personal preference.

@@unknownerror294 to be precise, he's ethnic Han Chinese born in Hong Kong which is now part of China. The term Chinese is interchangeable for ethnicity or nationality. Eg a Taiwanese is ethnic Han Chinese but of Taiwanese nationality. Due to political stigma associated with Red China, the label Chinese is often frowned upon by Hong Kongers and Taiwanese.

His generation in Hong Kong is probably more diverse than you think. People are originally from not only the canton region, but also Teochew, Shanghai, Fujian, Northern China, etc, all came together. From Jackie's early interview, he mentioned that he spoke a mixture of multiple dialect with his dad. No need to mention during his early training with Master Yu Jim-yuen, the students were only allowed to speak Mandarin. And if you pay attention to his cantonese accent, it is not the young generation hong kong people's accent. His accent is more "canton" actually.

As an Indian who has lived abroad and an admirer of Jackie Chan, I can completely relate to what he is saying. He should definitely be proud and loving his country. Absolutely! I don't see this as a controversial interview at all keeping aside any political or ideological differences if any. Not really controversial, but I would like him to be more precise with his statements.... Nothing wrong with being proud of where you come from...HOWEVER, to say that if you do not like something about your country - you should just leave is a dangerous if not outright stupid ... no matter what country we are talking about.... if your government is oppressive and unjust - do you just pack and leave your country or fight for reforms and elect a new leadership ?? If people followed such recommendations we would still be ruled by Kings and Tyrants all over the World in every country.... fortunately people don't see it like that and they choose to fight for their rights rather than simply move to another country. Fundamentally change is natural, required for progress and beneficial.... ANY government that wants monopoly and submission is a government that MUST be changed.... In addition, speaking in more general terms.... people want progress also in cultural and other aspects of their lives.... most generic example: not that long ago women were given tickets for inappropriate attire on the beaches (two piece),.... not saying it's all perfect all over the World but at least majority of countries no longer prosecute, jail and kill their own citizens for the way they dress, the partners they choose to have, religion they follow or actually being atheists etc... etc...

As someone who knows almost nothing about Chinese politics, this is very interesting hearing one my childhood idols talk about this. However, I disagree with two things: 1) The notion that one should be "proud" of their ethnicity. I'd rather be proud of something I accomplished, not something I was born as. 2) The patriotism in the US is very polarized. There is an alarming amount of people that dislike or outright hate it here, but they don't leave. That's another big topic though..
@sara.cbc92
@sara.cbc92 Жыл бұрын
Interesting take. This is less about politics and more about identity, particularly what it means to be a Hong Konger/Chinese. US is a melting pot and Americans were never subjected to colonizations or handovers. Therefore most Hong Kongers lack a sense of identity and belonging. This results in the loathing of being identified as a Mainlander/Chinese while for others an embrace of reunification.

You have to understand the background of this "proudness". I agree with you in that xenophobia is bad and we're all just humans, but if you understand how China suffered through 150 years of humiliation, and Chinese people were bullied and taken advantage of by everyone else, whether it was the europeans, the Americans, even the Japanese; and throughout the 20th century, China was dirt poor and so far behind everyone else. The proudness is more like "We shouldn't be ashamed to be Chinese, we shouldn't pretend to be something we're not in order to ameliorate our inferiority complex". It's like, HK/TW people seem to think that it's an insult to call them Chinese, even though that's literally what they are.

I loved Jackie as a kid and I still enjoy his Hong Kong films and some of his American films. But I admit learning about him more is troubling-from his inability to remain faithful to his wife, to escaping the responsibility of fathering a child out of his marriage, and even giving up his son to support the stigmas of the Chinese political system. And now his full-on support of China during their attempts to politically neuter Hong Kong and culturally squash their freedom feels like a massive betrayal of the beautiful culture that supported his escalation to fame and money. He is who he is not only due to his own efforts but do to the things in his life that have supported him, and now he has renounced them all to gain the favor of a powerful, corrupt, and dangerous political system. There's nothing wrong with being proud to be Chinese. It is a beautiful country with rich culture and history and significant contributions to human civilization and progress. But the current political power of that country is dangerous; it seeks to suffocate and snuff out the individuality, uniqueness, freedom, and creativity that we desperately need to survive as a species in exchange for a sham peace and a sham unity. It's hard to accept China as good when it denounces Taiwan as a country and seeks to totally squash Hong Kong beneath its foot.

I share your views about his past and political beliefs with regards to the CCP. He cheated on his wife once, and never did it again. Similiarly, Arnold Schwarzenegger had an affair with his housekeeper which ended his marriage in divorce. Jackie's wife is a keeper for not doing the same. On his support for CCP, one can only hope the authoritarian government would do it's people right. The communist party has done far more damage than good. Eroding Chinese culture and the livelihood of ordinary Chinese people.

Political opponents were arrested and put out of power, critical media was silenced and people fled to the UK. Treason? Are you kidding me? The CCP didn't keep its promise to the people of Hong Kong, where elections and democracy should prevail. The CCP is full of lies and only knows an authoritarian style without room for opponents. No wonder that most people in HK left for the UK. I've been in Hong Kong multiple times, before and during (!!) the protests. So don't tell me that I don't know what I'm talking about. Don't trust the CCP, Sara.

@@JazzyArtKL I'm well aware of CCP's ploy to encroach into HK's democratic rule and autonomy over the years. The Causeway Bay Books kidnappings is a prime example. however the anti extradition protests of 2019 could have gone either way. I've seen equally vile acts from the protestors against the police, authorities, public facilities, innocent bystanders, Mainlanders, anyone who spoke Mandarin. Joshua Wong was also in cahoots with Nancy Pelosi and the NED hellbent on regime change/color revolutions countering a rising Red China. There are 2 sides to a coin.

HK is a different place from china it is British rule and Cantonese aren’t mandarin. 2 different spoken own native language but HK have the freedom to speak their mother tongue. He’s is not a Chinese
@sara.cbc92

Of course, the two are different languages and some Mainlanders may argue it's a dialect. Politics aside, Cantonese is under the Sino-Tibetan group of languages, hence it's considered under the umbrella of Chinese language. Cantonese is also spoken by 55 million people in Guangdong, Southern China.

@@YSFmemories hey, quit that nonsense. There are many provinces in China that speak Cantonese like Guangdong, Macau and of cos Hong Kong. This kinda separatist attitude is exactly why Hongkongers hate Mainlanders.

@YSFmemories Жыл бұрын
@@sara.cbc92 not really... Its because they are elitist and think they are superior to mainland chinese ppl. Its also not separatist; canto sounds ugly its just the objective truth. Because the tones in canto create unpleasant sound combinations like augmented fourths or diminished sixths in musical harmony terms. I dont like japan for example for what they did in wwii, but japanese is a beautiful language. English and mandarin are pretty nice too, but french is also ugly. It is what it is

@@YSFmemories I have met hundreds of Mainlanders and Hongkongers. Never having lived there I can be objective in my deductions that Mainlanders lack civility and personal hygiene compared to people from HK. This is one criteria to judge Mainlanders. And the amount of scammers from China is quite shocking. Whether a language sounds ugly is subjective. Ironically most Mainlanders grew up listening to Canto pop by the 4 Heavenly Kings. While China had the Gang of 4 😂
