I saw a video of Rodney Dangerfield on The Tonight Show from the early eighties and he told the "read his first book" joke, but Jackie wrote for Rodney for a while, so maybe he did write it, but it seems like it's such an obvious hacky joke that it had to have been out there long before that. I loved it when Robin said "these are jokes that I know" and Jackie replied "they're my jokes, you know them because you know me". 🙄

Jack really was a terrible comic. Go check out that movie Comedies Dirtiest Dozen that Jackie is in. Omg he is soooo bad. Rapid fire joke book cracks, laughing over his own punchlines. The crowd eventually stops laughing and he starts berating them. After they laughed generously for every other comic, Jackies style eventually wore thin and they were looking at him in shocked silence. So he starts yelling at them lol. Like its their fault, not his rapid fire hacky delivery! He was too much.

Telling corny fat jokes was already old when Jackie did this set. I find his act as out of touch as a vaudeville act. But his writing on Howard was excellent so there's this weird disconnect. All those free plugs PLUS a TV commercial twice an hour on E! couldn't sell those CDs.

What I never got was Jackie was a brilliant fast witty guy who wrote hilarious shit for Howard on the fly, yet went on Star Search his big break and did lame old ass hacky jokes (which is why he lost, the judges gave the other guy credit for at least having original material) and his standup act was always a joke book montage.
