Welcome to this weeks woodturning video:
Woodturning - Outside the Box !!
In this woodworking video I use a woodturning lathe to turn an ornate box made from offcuts. (Spalted beech, African rosewood, walnut). I feel this video falls into the ASMR and entertainment categories.
If you find these video’s a good source of entertainment, I’d appreciate you like, share and subscribe.
Thanks for watching.

@@JackMackWoodturning I attempted my first lidded bowl yesterday. It's not perfect but I'm happy with the results given it was my first attempt. I did learn a few things in the process. #1 sharpen tools often, it makes turning so much easier. #2 the oneway chuck I have with #2 jaws has a 3 inch/76 mm limit max opening. I think I will need something with greater capacity if I'm going to more project like this. #3 and probably the most important, never force pieces to fit, its wood and does not do well when forced. I can't wait for more inspiring videos from you! Thanks Jack, Roland

As others have said, you make it look effortless but I know you've got many, many years of practice. A few questions if you'll humor me. What is your thought process when creating a spindle? I've watched others make them and the often seem out of scale for the piece they're going on or super ornate when they don't need to be. Last question: what brand/model of lathe and chuck are you using in these videos? All the best, Stuart
@JackMackWoodturning
@JackMackWoodturning 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Stuart. I just make a finial I think will look nice. Yes I’ve seen some awful ones too. This just comes down to people with a bad eye for design. The lathe is sold by Axminster tools but I’d not recommend it.. I’ve had nothing but issues with it. They have also put the price up since I bought it and they now sell the same junk for twice the price. The chuck is also sold by them but this one is good this is the SK114 … BEWARE however they also sell another middle of chuck the sk100 which is the worst chuck I’ve ever used and they should be forced to stop selling it as it’s an absolute piece of 💩.. this is think tells you all you need to know about Axminster tools.. they do not care about the customer experience or about selling machines and hardware they know to be sub standard.. the sk114 chuck is probably the only decent then I’ve ever bought from them 😆

@JackMackWoodturning

No, I use wool after sanding to burnish the surface.. sanding happens At low speed generating no heat Burnishing is done with extra fine wire wool of wood shavings at a high speed and dose generate heat

A very lovely covered box , with final , May I make some suggestions ? Adjust the band saw blade guide , so it is about 1.5 CM above the work piece . This reduces twisted bad while making cuts , and reduces the amount of exposed blade that you might inadvertantly contact , with fingers , hand or forearm. Mounting a bowl blank onto a spinning screw drive , while quick , can result in the blank not seating squarely , or inuring hand , lock the spindle , and screw it on with both hands Mind the gap between tool rest , and work , especially on long thin spindle turning long finials , without a steady support , to reduce vibration Colwin Way shows how to support thin pieces , using a skew , by placing the thumb on tool,rest , and curling fingers over the top to prevent whipping and chatter , while using a planing cut , with tool rest above center Cheers

Gary.. this is lovely that you want to advise me how to turn like you’ve been remotely taught from Colin. I turn wood professionally. I have done for 20 years, I taught woodturning for over 5 years and turn over 3500 item for wholesale to highly reputable stockists per year. The points you make are very much things we tell novice turners so that they have a comfortable set of rules to work within. As you’ll likely know within whatever profession you operate there are things we teach the newbies and the way we do it as experienced, knowledgeable and competent humans. The bandsaw guard in my shop is raised mostly for the camera to see the cut, but also it doesn’t matter as I’m rough cutting, only removing bulk. The point you could make is to use a 1/4” blade instead of a 1/2” Blade to cut a tight radius.. but obviously as I’m not interested in hitting the marked out line I’m not going to take the time to reset everting.. instead we play it as it lies, to perform the task we want it to perform. Bandsaws are not the best tool for precision cuts. The only time id really want help from the guid bearings is during resawing. And even then I’d raise the bearings as bing able to see the cut is way more important. There are non ( or very few if any) times you would use a bandsaw to achieve a finishing cut. Meaning there will always be a process after the bandsaw. Your advice is sound but I think you’ll struggle to see the cut from a comfortable angle with the guides set at 1.5cm above the cut. If you use a bandsaw all day everyday I think you would find my working methods make much more sense than the advice given to weekend woodworkers. 😊

Mounting on a screw chuck.. I do all my production bowls this way.. the blank doesn’t need to be “square” to anything it needs to be firmly seated against the face plate of the screw chuck. This is done by holding the blank loosely with your hands placed as you see mine in the video and the lathe set around 600 rpm.. at a lower speed you will likely find the work piece will not seat firmly and that you will need to stop the lathe lock the spindle and tighten down by hand. Having done this daily over 100 thousand time without injury I’d say I’m fairly confident in the process. If of course you are doing one bowl a week you’ll probably find you have the time to wind the piece on with the lathe stoped.

A steady rest on a 3” spindle is madness.. don’t do that.. and the distance of the tool rest is determined by what feels comfortable to the operator. Having the tool rest closer to the work dose not in its self lessen vibration. Have a look through my channel, watch my working methods, especially with the skew.. and then let me know how I should adapt my working methods. 👍🏻😉
