Thanks. My hollowing tools come from Simon hope woodturnig tools, by far the best on the market. This fostner bit is made for cutting directly into end grain. Also works for side grain. I don’t remember where I got them from but you should be able to find them online pretty easily. 👍🏻

Great idea and excellent execution. 1 question, what wax did you use on the sphere? Looks to have given a very high gloss finish.

Microcrystalline wax Doug, the sanding is pretty important though as I’m sure you know. 😉👍🏻

Thanks matey. If you look close you’ll notice it’s not a perfect sphere.. but, as they say, practice makes perfect. So just take a day and a pile of scrap wood an turn wide spindles into dome or hemisphere shapes.. that way you practice the hemisphere and can just keep taking another cut each time. The real key to locking down woodturning skills as to aim to make a very large pile of shavings rather than any finished piece. Shavings are never waste too, they can be composted, or use as garden mulch to keep weeds down under shrubs or used as garden paths or even kindling for starting a wood burning stove ect ect ect.. and that practice will be worth it’s weight in cheap scrap wood 👍🏻

Well that was impressive! Although given the great freehand circle you drew on the blank, I shouldn't be surprised that you could knock it up a dimension and freehand a sphere off the gouge that easily. Very nice.
