It occurs to me that this was far more about creativity and pushing the boundaries of what's possible on a lathe, than it was about producing a functional bowl with mass appeal... and that's why I come to this channel. So thanks.

Yup, came here to say that there were several operations I’d be scared of. There’s a shot where we can see the operator and you’ll notice he is standing out of the workpiece’s plane of rotation and the axis of the tool.
@JackMackWoodturning
@JackMackWoodturning 4 ай бұрын
@@MaxG628 while it’s a good idea to stay out of the “firing line” it’s no so much about the piece coming off the lathe. I’d say that by about 5 years of full time turning you know what’s going to hold . A drive spur used correctly for example is a far safer hold than a face plate, although many would think the opposite.

The wood was so beautiful. This had the potential for a beautiful charcuterie hybrid board, dip bowl, serving bowl, bread and flavored butter bowl, or fruit bowl. It seems it needs to be flatter on the bottom and two pieces that fit together like a puzzle to make it stable. That way it functions in a kitchen. I also envision a gorgeous bowl and an equally elegant slab to match. I would love either in my kitchen. The slant prohibits it from holding much without spilling. My brain keeps wanting to fix it and put it upright. If it was simply decorative, I would probably put pebbles in it from my travels or honeycomb. Maybe it’s growing on me as is while I think about it?

Loved the slo-mo. No way I'd attempt turning that with my crappy eyesight. I always try and figure out where the project is headed. This one kept me guessing and wondering. Neat looking piece. Advice on UV curable liquids. I worked in a gravure printing factory that had some UV curable inks. They are known as sensitizers and can make you you breakout in a BAD rash. Maybe not the first time, maybe not the third time but maybe the sixth time or maybe never. If you get a rash it will always get worse with use. Avoid getting it on your skin and breathing any heavy fumes. Stay safe.

From my understanding, this finishing technique is far less harmful that any of the traditional methods. That said, I would never allow it to touch my skin. Thanks for the heads up though. Are you still printing?

Wood is pretty much free for turning. Chunks of dried firewood is plentiful, and you can drive down back roads and find logs of all sizes free for the taking, just need to let them dry. Right now, I am working on a small hollow form of spalted Beech that I picked around 2 years ago Cheap way to build my turning skills.

I'm surprised by how many people dont like the results. With a burl, there are never any guarantees that it will be something good inside. What you can make is often chosen more by nature than the person doing the work. In this case, the place where the bowl was made was determined by the thickest, most concentric spot, which did not happen to be in the center of the burl. After that, creativity and experience are what determines the possible. Most would shy away from wings this big, but you really did a great job. You even managed to save a nice piece from the outer part with that saw trick. I am humbled and astonished at what I saw. Great job, and it's really cool. 👍

@JackMackWoodturning I wouldn't say a lot, but I've had the chance to dig into quite a few different types. Most of my experience is woodcarving, Lathe work is a more recent thing for me. So a lot of the burls that I've worked have been quite a bit smaller, and ended up as kuksa/Cuaich. My brother sent me a present from New York state, a Hickory Burl that was the size of a bowling ball and as heavy as a ball of marble. I couldn't believe how much of that thing was voids and bark inclusions. But the remainder had some really cool grain. It's always fun, even when they aren't perfect.

@@JackMackWoodturning First, I understand this is just a matter of taste, so please take it that way. That said, while I love art for it's own sake, I prefer that functional objects, like bowls, emphasize function over form. In other words, for my taste, a bowl should be a fully functional bowl first, and should then be beautifully crafted. I'm not sure this piece meets that criterion. While I could see this as a nice backdrop for a display of fruit, to make it a more functional bowl in which one could carry fruit, I would make it deeper and more stable on it's own. I hope this helps you understand why this piece isn't to my taste.

Я тоже не понял что это, хотя могу предположить что это чисто декаративная вещь для демонстрации текстуры дерева, тогда почему именно такая форма не усточивая и на стену не повесишь.

Awesome work. 😊 I was going to ask you about the grind setting you use for that monster gouge as I also us a Tormek and I like the shape of the grind. Then at about 9:48 I could see your Tormek sticker with JS 2 P75 Hole A. Much appreciated. 😊 👍 What size gouge is that? It's huge! 😁

Hahaha, that’s the one. I use a few grinds, all of which are in the Tormek booklet. The gouge is just a standard 1/2”
