I was born too early to... checks notes die of malnutrition.
1494. Spain and Portugal are both really into this new business of sailing the seas and owning everything you touch, but they have a problem. What if the other country sails the seas and touches the stuff that they own? That would be bad! So they cut the world in half. Spain owns this half of the Earth, and Portugal owns this half of the Earth. Spain gets to colonize the New World and make all the money buying slaves and selling sugar and chocolate and silver. Portugal gets to control who can sail around Africa, which means they get to make all the money trading slaves and spices.
But one day, an enterprising man by the name of Ferdinand Magellan arrives in the Spanish King’s court. He says “Your majesty, what if I told you the islands where Portugal gets its spices are actually on your half of the Earth? And what if I told you, you didn’t have to sail around Africa to get there? I’m like 90% sure we can wiggle underneath South America, and if we do, that’s your ticket to the untold riches of the spice trade. But it will take a captain of unassailable courage. My name is Ferdinand Magellan! I had a place in the conquest of Malacca, I served in the court of the Sultan of Ternate, I took a lance to the knee in Morocco. If you’ll have me, I am prepared to embark on the adventure of an age, to see for the first time with European eyes, ancient and diverse cultures and convert them to Catholicism. I am prepared to attempt what no man has ever dreamed before. Soon will I meet the men who shall be my brothers at sea, and I will be the first to circle the world!

Mr Jack, I laughed and laughed at all the gay sailor references, especially that disco party. But in all seriousness, since I really enjoy and trust your scholarship, do we have records of homosexuality in Magellan's flotilla? Personally, I've always thought Ferdinand was stark, raving mad. But I'm much more curious about his unfortunate crew

Once was a man, his name was Magellan. A Portuguese skipper The girls found him cute He sailed with five ships,to find the East Indies, Then come back to Spain, with a bounty of loot. Whoopie ti-yi-yo Oh happy Magellan! Starting your journey with hardly a care. Whoopie ti-yi-yo Strong, brave Magellan! You’ll find the East Indies , you just don’t know where. They crossed the Atlantic and spotted a country. Magellan said, “It’s the East Indies at last!” But then someone shouted, “Hey, that’s Argentina!” Magellan got cranky and chopped down the mast. Whoopie ti-yi-yo Settle down, Magellan. Put down that axe. There’s no time to despair. Whoopie ti-yi-yo Keep trying, Magellan. You’ll find the East Indies, you just don’t know where. A great storm arose In the mighty Pacific The five little ships Were diminished to three At last land was sighted Magellan was happy But then someone shouted, “Hey, that’s Chile!” Whoopie ti-yi-yo Cheer up, Magellan Check out your map and don’t tear out your hair Whoopie ti-yi-yo Keep trying, Magellan You’ll find the East Indies, you just don’t know where. It took them five months, but they crossed the Pacific They spotted a land, that was dotted with palms Magellan proclaimed, “Yes! That’s the East Indies!” But then someone shouted, “Hey, I think that’s Guam!” Ay-yi-yi-yi Oops, Magellan Your fun little journey’s Become a nightmare Whoopie ti-yi-yo Keep trying, Magellan You’ll find the East Indies, you just don’t know where They sailed due west To the Philippine Islands Magellan was pleased As the natives drew near But then someone shouted, “I think they’re attacking!” Magellan said, “What?” And got hit by a spear Whoopie ti-yi-yo Farewell, Magellan You almost made it It’s really not fair Whoopie ti-yi-yo Oh, ghost of Magellan The East Indies islands were right over there!

It amuses me that Magellan and Columbus made their voyages not because they knew more than other sailors of their time, but rather because they knew less. The rough size of the Earth was originally worked out by the ancient Greeks. Everyone knew that the distance to China across the Atlantic was way too far to travel without anywhere to stop for supplies. Columbus just got super lucky and ran into a previously unknown landmass. Magellan was even stupider than Columbus since he was trying to cross the Pacific without any friendly ports to resupply at along the western coast of the Americas. He bet everything on the Pacific being smaller than it is or running into some islands along the way.

Why didn't he go the other way? If he thought the spice islands and the west coast of south America were right next to each other, and there were already confirmed safe routes from Spain to the spice islands, then why not start from the spice islands and try to bump into the west cost of the Americas? Magellan was a hero. I'm sick of my country's education system portraying him as a villain. He had more balls than many of his contemporaries, faced various mutinies during the voyage, managed to keep a peaceful cooperation with the natives until they stabbed him in the back, and the completion of his voyage basically set in stone the clearing of the great mystery of the circumnavigation.

What do you mean "stabbed him in the back" the dude tried to flex about how cool he and his bunch of sailors are and got crushed by an actually competent military. He told his allies to stand back because he was stupid. Oh yeah, and he razed and plundered the pacific islands
@Ariverfish
@Ariverfish 4 ай бұрын
@@isaac3140 His crew got poisoned and attacked by Humabon unprompted after Mactan, forcing them to ditch many of their stuff, and even the "invasion" of Mactan was most likely exagerrated. They knew they were outnumbered and undersupplied for battle, and an invasion was not possible with the loses of men he incurred throughout the voyage, either through mutiny, disease or AWOL, they took the gamble that Lapu-Lapu would stand down and work things out diplomatically when they landed on shore. The gamble didn't work because Lapu-Lapu was a brute barbarian and filthy pirate who attacked him immediately, he was in active rebellion with Humabon raiding and killing as he goes. "Competent military" my arse, are you actually kidding me? Magellan was an explorer not a conquistador. The whole point of the voyage was the circumnavigation, they even ditched all of the precious metals they got from the Americas just to remove weight. Good thing Legazpi would actually bring the gunpowder and ink years after, crushing the Tagalogs while allying with other more civilized Datus like Sicatuna. The same couldn't be said today where the common man is under the thumb of Manila and the Tagalog.

@@Ariverfish skill issue tbh. Magellan being an explorer and not a conquistador is exactly why he shouldn't have been trying to become a conquistador. Didn't Magellan circumnavigate the globe before this voyage? How did he manage to get the positions of the islands he was looking for so wrong when he'd literally been to that exact part of the world before?

Imagine if China instead of being foolish isolationists decided to fully explore the Pacific Ocean

China were never "foolish isolationists". The tributary system worked in its intended function of channeling trade into China's allies like Ryukyu after which they could be taxed, similar to the Spanish Casa de Contratacion policy. The Europeans crossed the Pacific because they wanted to get to the Spice Islands. Chinese merchants already controlled the Spice Islands (google the Sulu zone)

@@Samuel-wm1xrthey had the largest fleet on earth at one point and where able to project power across the old world all the way to Africa. Then their Emperor decided to not do that anymore which cost them as it left a power vacuum on the seas that Europe took over. They also had a tendency not to properly use or put into practice all that their thinkers were developing... which Europe not only did but also perfected and expanded on. The British legitimately beat the Chinese using their own technology but making it better because Europe was the thunderdome of the Old World while China was so strong with men that they literally bullied their neighbors into submission and only really fight itself.

Wouldnt the Spanish already have reached the Pacific Ocean by land already, at leasy by central america? So everyone in the expedition would still have the hope that the "other side" of south america actually exists.
