Cool to see timing that low. I'm running 19 lbs on a s480 at about 19 degrees on ethanol. I do have it pull some timing out at peak torque because I'd also like the rods to remain a straight line and not a taco.

With more of Cleetus's failures fresh on the mind, I have to ask a few questions. OBVIOUSLY your tuning strategy works, in terms of timing and being mindful of cylinder pressure. Do you think that your ace in the hole is the short stroke combination with the 4.8L ? You haven't mentioned pushing a head gasket either, like many others in their 4" stroke 'built' motors who seem to think that they need 30deg @ 30lbs..lol. ...and are scared of anymore boost than that, yet will continue pumping in timing simply by checking the plugs physically. Because you began this tuning career with a fresh set of eyes, do you think that there are many tuners still stuck in OLD ways of thinking and infact there is room for new tactics ? or is this simply the case of a perfect storm with trying to keep the 4.8 alive and benefiting from the low TQ production in the low and mid ranges naturally ? Again, PROPS to you and your mission. I am strongly considering a 4.8 Colorado street build and applying some of your thinking, keeping it a kitty cat in the low mid ranges so as not to tear the truck apart...and where the wife might drive it, and then a monster up high when I wanted the performance.. Cheers.
@SquirrelTuned
@SquirrelTuned 4 жыл бұрын
The 4.8 naturally making less torque does help but the same methods work on all sizes of engines. I've got a customer with a sbe 6.0 that's within 100hp of where my 4.8 has been and I think it'll still capable of plenty more. And I think there's many ways to do things and there's not just one right way. But there are a lot of tuners that just run flat timing through the entire rpm range which I don't feel is the ideal way of doing things. But then again if you're converter only drops 500rpm on the shift and always keeps rpm high that way of tuning works just fine.
@joeyjojojr.shabadoo915
@joeyjojojr.shabadoo915 4 жыл бұрын
@@SquirrelTuned I'm a fan of big bore/short stroke/long rod especially for forced induction and big RPM. The fact that you are not crying for an LSX block as the only way forward and manage to keep head gaskets in the motor is a testament to your tuning ability and understanding of cylinder pressure and timing. I wish more people were less afraid of boost and quit trying to fix things with timing advance.
@joeyjojojr.shabadoo915
@joeyjojojr.shabadoo915 4 жыл бұрын
@@SquirrelTuned On a side note, please eventually build a 6.0L block with a full counter 4.8L crankshaft. Small cubes are far more impressive with RPM when you are not having measure your 'manhood' against the old school who constantly say "theres no replacement for displacement" because we all know that Turbos are an easy equalizer ;)
@SquirrelTuned
@SquirrelTuned 4 жыл бұрын
@@joeyjojojr.shabadoo915 oh I'm all about small cubes. I think my next motor will be a 5.3 more than likely. Then maybe later on a good block and do a 388 and still rev to the moon. I like the short stroke stuff a lot better. Only thing I don't like about the 6.0s is the cylinder walls seem to be a weak spot.

I have a turbo LS Fox, 1.35-ish 60 foot times and my oil pressure drops to about 20 PSI for the first 2 seconds or so. I saw in the data log that you didn't have that issue, mind sharing what the oil pan set up was?
@SquirrelTuned
@SquirrelTuned 3 жыл бұрын
I had the holley 302-1 pan, swapped to moroso 20142 though because the holley pan put the diaper too close to the flexplate. Also recommend over filling any pan you use by about a qt.

so with the conservative timing map that you are using , would you suggest that to someone using a sbe 5.3 ?

I wouldn't suggest copying it directly because not every setup will want the same amount of timing. However I would recommend pulling timing at lower rpm like I do.

@@SquirrelTuned Do you think a 26" tall tire with a 3.31 gear would have done similarly or maybe a 27" tall tire with a 3.42 gear? I ask as I usually use 26" and 27" tall tires on my fox and would love to know if I can make mine equivalent in that sense without going to a 28" tire. If the 26" tire hooked, would the lower numerical gearing of the 3.31 gear cause too much load for the rods? Thanks
@SquirrelTuned
@SquirrelTuned 3 жыл бұрын
@@GTStuning- I would have to check with a gearing calculator to see. But I see no issue in doing the same thing with a shorter tire with a little longer gear ratio. 3.42 and a 26in is pretty similar to 28in and 3.73. I actually ended up going to a 4.10 after this. Ideally you should go through the traps a few hundred rpm past peak power rpm so that is one way to pick the gear ratio. Also need to keep starting line ratio in mind though. Lot of different factors.
