@MiguelCoutinhoBalduino23 күн бұрын
Man, I don't want to be rude, but you should stop trying to make videos like gothamchess like guess the elo because It's a video for content creators which means you will only get views if youre famous or if youre creating a new style. You can see that your tips of how to play better give much more views and also I believe more subscribers, since that's how people will meet you, they will try to solve their problem, like a doubt of how to analyze the games. Hope that will give you a boost.

Wow! You rattled off a synopsis of both sides like machine! That is the best description of how a Chess engine tries to account for a position I've ever heard. One could almost prototype an evaluation function for a new Chess engine based solely on your quick synopsis. This is my favorite part of your lecture, as I've struggled to see the reasons why modern engines think the way they do.
@jacksarkisian28 күн бұрын
thankyou! it definitely doesn't give justice to how complicated the engine really is, but its definitely a simple way to put it that'll at least help you understand the engine. the big flaw about the logic is that its difficult to weigh which strength/weaknesses is more important to the game. for example being down a knight is more important than having a strong bishop. this ones obvious, but you could see how there would be times where its not so straightforward.

Perhaps its not right to say gotham chess channel is overrated. But i grown very tired to his funny faces and click bait thumbnails. Infact, i am allergic to it. So i stopped watching his videos. He did lots of nice instructive videos in the past. But i find there are other channels that now apare better and more instructive. Like chess vibes, john Bartholowmew, and now this one. I would say be carefull to speak to fast. Many consentrates the videos and get the length down, witch i guess is good when video is mainly talking. But remember the brain also need some time to grasp what is being said. For me specialy because i like to think about things. Anyways, the content here i find very valuable, so thanks a lot, keep up the good work. Chess channels like yours, like chess vibes and like Johns channel deserve as many viewers as gotham, at least.

Yea I started hiding channels that overdo it on the clickbait. It does soul damage any time you click a "😱😱😱😱😱 da rukh" video. Also the ones that say "THIS OPENING WILL MAKE YOU GRANDMASTER AND YOUR OPPONENT'S WIFE WILL LEAVE HIM". Then it turns out it's just ruy lopez or something.
@niravapurv457829 күн бұрын
@@strir yes thats how it looks like now. But he had really good series like winning at chess. I watched him a lot some years ago, and he have some really great instructive videos, some on endgames, and few on openings. But i guess the algorithms have been pushing them down, really algorithms can work against us too, putting those most popular clickbait stuff first as it is human nature to click on them based on our curiosity, fear and shock/ amazement. And when we later find out the content really didnt match the tumbnail/headlines, its kind of late. His "win at chess" series was at around 25 videos where every singel one was realy good stuff. Tho i have to mention John Bartholowmew and his "climbing the rating ladder", as i think many of these similar series from other channels probably stole this idea from him. At least he is one of the first that i saw has this kind series. And he has several, if you like blitz, try his "using the clock as weapon".
@niravapurv457829 күн бұрын
Now i looked him up and "win at chess" is at 32, they are all very good, his endgame playlist are only at 3, but they are good, perhaps that on pawn endgames are kind of basic. His opening series is at 44 videos, and i use those less. Hismost reasent videos are all just on more, lets say populistic topics. Luckily, we can choose the best of everyone, and there are then practicaly soon endless of good entertaining and instructive content. Its nice to follow what is going on in the cheating world, thats how i found this channel i think. Very interesting analysis here, just needed to get to understand a little more what is going on and how to react. But it seems Levy has totally forgiven or put no suspision on Hans Niemann anymore. And yes i get it, there is no substantial evidens on him cheating over the board, or in recent times. But he as a person sertainly do not radiate trust the way he laughs of things. And the fact he sometimes played very good against the best or better players seems a bit out of logic, and he has not been able to reproduce many of these results, going a bit up and down lately. I remember he he had a big raise in rating, now ofc it could be that covid did have some influence, still there was others in similar situations that could not perform as fast as him. Anyways it feels like Gotham is taking him into the warmth, where i would just stay away a bit... probably Hans Nieman topic gives more clicks, so its profitable to go on with him. While i just dislikes the topic, after all we have a situation where there the suspision has not been confirmed, and we have to let the doubt rest as there is no proof on the accused, yet ofc its not sure at all that the accusations was baseless. When his trainer/couch was also accused, thats a big red flag for me. He definitely have people around him that could help to do this kind of cheating. And as levy him self recently had one good video on cheating. He line out how 2 helpers can make cheating possible and almost impossible to detect. Its not good, luckily, i think the chances for somebody cheating at my local chess club is less due to less motivation. I mean why? I mean some could, but i think most dont have any good reason, if so must be some of the younger players with future motivations.

GM Sark, thank you for all you have done for the chess community! This was a fantastic video. I have a topic for another video that I think you would be ideally suited for. Would you consider doing a video on online chess etiquette? For example, if your opponent makes an obvious mouse slip, do you ever offer a draw in this circumstance? Or, if an opponent does a loser thing and offers you a draw when they are obviously in an inferior position, do you let their clock run down on them while they are waiting for your response? Or do you refuse such draws immediately without burning their clock down? Do you engage in chat with your opponent during games? Thank you for considering!

this would be a cool topic to look at for sure, i’ll definitely add it to my list of video ideas - thanks!

@jacksarkisian28 күн бұрын
its actually probably neither the Caro-Kann nor the Slav. the Slav requires c4 to be played and the Caro requires e4 to be played - neither of which happened. really i just have a habit of calling anyone who plays 1. c6 a Caro-Kann player because they typically learn the Caro-Kann, then fill in the gaps on 1. d4 by learning the Slav which has a very similar pawn structure and gameplans.

So in your demo analysis you use your experience to explain the point behind a move, like why you liked Bh2 as opposed to Bg3, or why you didnt like pushing a4 a5 early, or c4. If you dont have that experience its really easy to get mired in details going through 100s of branches and not retaining any useful info, so one thing you said that stuck with me in the beginning was to "prioritize what you did wrong and what you shoudve done instead" And with that what is the best way to come away with a plan? Like if i see i played an inaccuracy or even a mistake/blunder and i try looking into the problem and find myself 10 moves into a variation and still dont see the problem would it be the case that its not practical to look into it? And digressing on that topic is an inaccuracy a blunder that you still have time to save? Maybe an inaccuracy=problems 10-20 moves down the line, mistake=problems 5-10 moves dtl, blunder=immediate obvious problem to 2-5 moves dtl? Thanks for tackling this subject anyway!
@jacksarkisian28 күн бұрын
this is a great point that maybe i didn't clarity enough. let's imagine we're being 100% thorough in our analysis, exploring every sub-optimal move we made and understanding what a better plan would've been. in this case, we would do what i did in the video. figure out why the engine thought our move was bad, and understand what a better (not always top engine) move would've been. of course we can't memorise this, because in the middlegame we're unlikely to get the same position twice, but memorising the pattern and understanding what it did can lead us to apply the same techniques in future positions that may be similar to what we just analysed. if we're playing the same opening repertoire every game, we're bound to reach maybe not identical, but similar positions in future games. understanding positions we got wrong, memorising the pattern of play we analysed and applying that to our future games is what allows us to improve. as for your other question blunder: you've completely forfeited material with little compensation. mistake: similar to a blunder, but usually more of a positional error. sometimes blundering material but this time with compensation. inaccuracy: a slow move that undoes progress, or allows your opponent to improve their position whilst yours did not improve. there are also times where the reason your move was a mistake is not clear. if this is the case don't worry about it. if you can't see why it was bad neither will your opponents. take things 1 step at a time and eventually when you're 500 ELO stronger you'll be able to understand most of what the engine is suggesting to you (even I can't understand some things it says, lots of educated guesswork at times).

How do you improve like this? Lightning speed analysis and not trying to come up with the best move yourself... Do you think this is more efficient, more of a "water hose" approach as opposed to sitting and thinking over the key positions for longer time? I review my games all the time and I cannot improve... 1200 online >
@jacksarkisianАй бұрын
of course sitting and analysing games for longer is going to be more beneficial, but you have to find a balance between enjoyment and improvement. lots of people don’t enjoy sitting and analysing for longer than they play, so a brief analysis like the one i conducted at the end of the video is definitely a step in the right direction and will make you better as opposed to not analysing at all.

30:35 seems like a missed opportunity for some good analysis. If you couldn't come up with a plan in the game shouldn't you look at the engine (or by yourself) and find a plan/s in order to improve for next time?
@jacksarkisian29 күн бұрын
this definitely would’ve been a good inclusion for the analysis, which is mainly why i prefaced it with the fact that my analysis would be imperfect. just forgot the exact moment that i ran short of finding a plan in the game & missed the opportunity to explore what i should’ve done instead. it is a bit doubled edged though, because whilst analysis is important, exploring absolutely everything you did (in what was a fairly insignificant 5min Blitz game) can take up to an hour. balancing the line between maximising improvement and not getting bored of self analysis is super important too, which is why at a certain point i believe an analysis reaches a point of being “good enough”.

yeah generally the later in the game you get, the less important the analysis is. in the later stages i didn’t have too much time to think about my moves, leading to more mistakes than the first half of the game that i otherwise wouldn’t have made. you should definitely still analyse this part of the game, but not with as much care as beginning 🔥
