There are a lot of words to do with flight pattern in aviation. Ever wondered what any of them mean? Including upwind, crosswind, downwind, base leg, final and departure. Find out what each of them are using a diagram and flight in FSX.

I believe that at 1:35 you mistakenly stated that if the wind is blowing TOWARDS the RIGHT, landings would be on Runway-LEFT. More correctly the landings would be approaching from the RIGHT and landing on Runway-RIGHT if the wind is blowing towards the right. "Because, as you should know, aircraft take off and land into the wind." Remember ?

Awesome - you seem to understand this better than most seasoned pilots. My only addition would be that after upwind, always turn crosswind over, not after the runway, merging into downwind on the inside at a 45 deg angle, or performing a teardrop to merge in from the outside if traffic is heavy. This is to avoid a collision with aircraft on the departure leg.

This helped me with my studying for the Part 107 sUAS test. I was getting confused on which way upwind and downwind are. After watching this, I decided to think of it like going up or down a hill, and whether gravity is working against you or with you. Thanks!

Would left and right only apply to an aerodrome or airport with two parallel runways ?

when you fly out of Twin Falls or out of Salt Lake they put you in a traffic pattern departure. first they have you take off from the runway and then they have you do a crossed leg departure and then they have you fly back on the runway heading on the downwind leg and then they have you turn left or right to exit the traffic pattern and then head north or south. the tricky part is entering the traffic pattern. coming into Twin Falls ID to fly over trees plus hills Salt Lake as the trickiest of all of the traffic pattern approaches. to the north of Salt Lake is the lake itself to the South is Mount Oriah if you don't adjust your altitude while you are entering the traffic pattern into Salt Lake if you overseed on the North End of the runway your plane crashes into Antelope Island or goes into the lake if you mess up on the south end you crash into the Wasatch mountains this is why you need to dial your GPS compass or your autopilot so your plane is exactly lined up with Runway 34 or you risk over shooting or crashing into the mountains or the lake trust me I did that before in flight simulator and it is not a good experience.

Just starting to learn aviation and would like to know how do pilots know which end of the runway is left or right? I know the ends have markers but pilots can't see them from far away. Thanks for the video!
@JacksFSVideos
@JacksFSVideos 4 жыл бұрын
Pilots will be directed by ATC towards the correct runway, also using a combination of onboard ILS. Once in visual range, they can just confirm by seeing which is left/right

Great tutorial, but when you're in the aircraft how do you know which way the wind's blowing? Does ATC tell you, or do you have look at an airsock or something?

Very helpful as are all your videos :D Recently got back into FSX, forgotten how fun it was! Im also getting myself into more flight sims so I have variety. Unrelated question to this particular video; as im getting into fsx a lot more what joysticks/yokes would you recommend in being a good buy, there is a lot out there and just want some pointers, my keyboard/mouse/xbox controller aint cutting it!
@JacksFSVideos
@JacksFSVideos 7 жыл бұрын
To be honest, I would not recommend getting a yoke as I have. Just because I feel that it does not give you a feel for the aircraft as you're flying it. I would recommend a joystick, but then that all depends on your price range. This website I found seems to be a good place to start - www.pcgamer.com/the-best-pc-joysticks/.

The reason why it's called crosswind is because you'll experience crosswind if winds were straight down the runway.

So if the wind would turn 90 degrees from your example, the downwind/upwind leg would turn into a crosswind leg, and the crosswind/base leg would be in an upwind/downwind.
@JacksFSVideos
@JacksFSVideos 7 жыл бұрын
In theory that's correct. However this would never happen in real life, as if the wind turned 90 degrees, this is what is called perfect crosswind. Where there are crosswinds passing at a perpendicular angle to the runway. In this case, all the legs would most likely stay the exact same as in the example as neither runway would be preferable for take-off or landing. You could never have the crosswind leg or the base leg along the side of the runway (parallel to it) as it wouldn't work for landing. They always have to be at the ends of the runway, similarly, the upwind and downwind legs must always be running along the side of the runways. It also doesn't matter if the upwind is above or below the runway and vice versa. It's just about which direction that pilot chose to approach the airport at. Hope this helps.

Hi! Cool video, thanks. So basically, there are no fixed direction of the landing strip, the ground services decide what direction the planes should align to when taking off and landing, according to the current wind? But how does it work when the wind is zero or very close to it? For example, if you have ten changes through zero in a day, because the wind fluctuates between -1m/s and +1m/s for some direction. Does the airport change the direction ten times a day then? How does it notify the aircrafts that are going to land or take off?
@JacksFSVideos
@JacksFSVideos 4 жыл бұрын
That's right, the airport tower will monitor the wind strength and direction to determine the active runway. But if the wind is close to 0, they would simply carry on using the active runway they were already using. Remember it's DIRECTION which determines the active runway, not STRENGTH. If the winds were constantly changing direction then it would be a judgement call for the tower controllers. They'd usually only change runways if there was a sustained change in the wind direction as for commercial airports it's a big deal to change runways. That being said, I know Heathrow for example switches their runways at 3pm everyday, but not in direction, just it's parallels (one for landing, one for take-off). So it shows that it can be done at short notice and fairly often In terms of communication, the controllers would simply radio the pilots to inform them of the change and provide them with a new landing/approach pattern for the new runway. Hope this helps!
