I need someone to explain Volks defense. I noticed in the Yair fight too. he raises his lead shoulder, but his right hand is reaching across as if trying to pick off a jab, when someone is throwing big hooks at him. It seems like although his shoulder is raised, he is looking over it so his chin is not protected and his rear hand going across is a response to not trusting his lead shoulder. It seems odd.

Scrambles were good but not much strategy there. Vera was throwing things at the wall and hoping something stuck, especially after he done his shoulder.

Kinda wonder how the fighters being similar in height affected things. Volk could more comfortably throw higher kicks, but I imagine his ducking overhands wouldn't be as safe?
@AveSicarius7 ай бұрын
Not just that, but it's much easier to get into range to actually setup your control and whatever gameplan you've got going on. Against taller fighters high kicks are absolutely much harder, but you also have to account for the fact that midsection kicks are sometimes your best counter for a longer punch if you can land them (body kick after baiting a straight for example so you can lean out of reach), meanwhile your opponents kicks can hit you outside your range so entering it is usually the only option to actually progress the fight. It radically changes how you have to fight, like, if you watch that first Islam fight Volkanovski has to constantly close range while dealing strikes he can't really counter unless he closes the opponent down, meanwhile he never has that issue against someone his own size. The second fight went the way it did because Islam worked out he just had to outrange with kicks while Volkanovski was trying to gain distance, which Volkanovski clearly hadn't had time time to work out a solution (because 11 days really isn't enough for that lol). Volkanovski probably can head kick at that height, but you have to put the position of both fighters in your mind. You have to be very, very close to headkick a taller fighter, and this leaves you open to a variety of counters to what is a relatively slow technique (takes time to bring your leg up and over).
