Can we discuss and appreciate how TXSU played Snarky Puppy’s Lingus?? And as the first song 😮‍💨 Real Jazz fans know about Snarky Puppy and how Corey Henry SMASHED his solo. In fact, TXSU might be the first HBCU band to play any of their songs! Wow is all I can say. Well executed and much respect TXSU!

I was excited when they started playing it. I saw Sanrky Puppy live in Dallas. However, I was underwhelmed by the execution. They did well but there were some bad notes in there, which are expected in that type of intricate song. All in all, I was still impressed.

I honestly think it’s because they focus more on stands and music . If you think about it jackson state learns a different show every week.. txsu has been doing the same drill all season I think.. so this gives them more focus on stand music. They both did great tho not taking away from anyone

This was a good battle. Neither band blew the other one out. Both had some issues but to my surprise, TXSU was a little better fundamentally. I think JSU was on an outcrank mission. In the process there were intonation, balance, pitch, blend, and a few tempo mishaps. TXSU had mishaps too, but I believe theirs stem from adjusting to more complex and challenging arrangements. Minus the last selection TXSU was a little more cohesive and together. I'm a huge Sonic Boom fan but I would give TXSU a slight nod. The execution needs some more work but I believe it will get there as long as Brian is running the program. They have improved leaps and bounds and I believe at some point they will be the top band in the SWAC. Oddly enough, I see shades of SU and JSU in the program. Knowing who's on staff it makes sense. If they can ever get that formula perfected I don't know how you can beat that.

Of course, I always have made love for the fabulous Boom and the incomparable, trendsetting J-Settes. They were awesome! TSU band has a very nice smooth sound as well. They are smaller group this year, despite that, this showmanship is what I love about HBCU music programs. Lot's of talented musicians! If not for other good music programs like the SWAC bands, the Boom would have no decent competition and the football season would not be so enjoyable.

I like TxSU’s approach to start with the classy/technical selections immediately. When you got someone with a power advantage, going straight to the power songs isnt the best idea. I think that was their mistake with Southern. Here, they have a solid argument for the W in the 5th (I still give the very slight W to JSU though)

Not going to critique TXSU I’m glad they have new energy at the program and love what I’m seeing there. But to complain about JSUs volume is wild because if they were the size they were and the volume didn’t match people would have something to say every week about them. Also There is a difference between being loud and powerful! JSU has had many years in my experience where they weren’t the loudest band but the most Powerful! Meaning there is a full wall of balanced sound! They are also one of the only bands that arranges for the band they have which means sometimes it won’t be as many wow moments where a certain section sticks out because they are balanced!
