I know the Dutch flag so well, that I could recognize it even by description, with closed eyes, and I cannot understand how can someone not know the Dutch flag, and, it is the same with the Icelandic flag and all other Norse / Germanic / Nordic flags and the 6 Celtic flags and the American / English flags and most Latino flags and most other European flags, which I also know so well, because I am advanced level in Icelandic and Norwegian, upper intermediate level in Norse and German, mid intermediate level in Welsh and Swedish and Portuguese and Italian and French, writer level in English, native speaker level in Spanish, mid beginner level in Breton and Faroese and Irish and Gothic and Slovene and Danish and Hungarian and others, and beginner level in most other target languages, and I also know most Asian flags now as I’ve been watching lots of travel videos lately, and now I must learn most African flags because I only know a few of them, but I think I already know about half of all the flags, and trying to learn the other half, but the Norse and other Germanic flags and the Celtic flags are the flags that I know better than all other flags because I am actively learning the languages and focusing mostly on the heavenly Norse languages and Celtic languages at the moment and I get to see them all the time! 🇮🇸

Flag tips: Nordic flags - All have basically the same cross, the difference are the colors. White cross/red background = Denmark, Blue cross and white border/red background = Norway (inverted Iceland), Red cross and white border/blue background = Iceland, Blue cross/white background = Finland, Yellow cross/blue background = Sweden African flags - African flags tend to have the colors red, yellow, and green, the Pan-African colors based off Ethiopia's flag and how they remained outside European control during the colonial era. Ghana was the first to adopt a flag of this style upon independence. Theirs are horizontal red yellow and green with a star, while Guinea has these same three colors but vertical. Central American flags - Central American flags tend to have blue stripes whether horizontal or vertical. El Salvador and Nicaragua are nearly identical but a way to tell the difference is one has flags on the sides of the triangle (El Salvador) while the other doesn't (Nicaragua). Honduras' has five stars in the middle, Guatemala's blue stripes are vertical and lighter in color, and Costa Rica's looks similar to North Korea's. Belize's is just Laos with a wider blue background. And Panama is just red, white, and blue with a star in two different corners of the flag. Poland, Monaco, Singapore, and Indonesia: Monaco and Indonesia are the same (though Monaco is a bit more of a square), and Poland is just inverted. While Singapore is just Indonesia with the moon and stars on the upper left. Colombia, Venezuela, and Ecuador: Colombia and Ecuador have the same big yellow background and blue and red stripes. But one has a coat of arms (Ecuador) while the other does not (Colombia). Venezuela's yellow, blue, and red are evenly striped with stars in the middle Cuba: Puerto Rican flag but inverted; or you could just remember my profile pic since I appear so often Cyprus, Tuvalu and Kosovo: These three have the shape of their countries on the flag. Cyprus is yellow on a white background, Kosovo's shape is yellow on a dark blue background with white stars, and Tuvalu has yellow stars forming the shape of the archipelago on a sky blue background with the Union Jack on the upper left corner Haiti and Liechtenstein: Fun fact, during the 1936 Olympics, Liechtenstein realized they had the same blue-red pattern as Haiti. So they added a crown to the upper left corner of the flag. While Haiti added their coat of arms right in the middle in 1986 (though it looks like somebody just copied and pasted an image to the flag and printed it). Netherlands and Luxembourg: Think of Aquafresh toothpaste...that one is Netherlands. Luxembourg is very similar but has a lighter shade of blue Malaysia, Liberia, USA, Greece: Malaysia, Liberia, and US flags all look nearly identical to each other. One has a moon and star on the upper left blue corner (Malaysia), one has only one star on the upper left blue corner (Liberia), and the one we all know has 50 stars. Greece also looks similar but theirs has blue stripes and a cross on the upper left blue corner Vietnam and China: Same yellow star/red background, but one has only one big star (Vietnam) while the other has five stars on the upper left Slavic flags: These flags tend to have blue, white, and red stripes. Serbia's is just Russia's but inverted with a coat of arms, Slovenia's is Russia's with a small coat of arms on the upper left. Slovakia's has a bigger coat of arms with a cross. Bulgaria's is also Russia's but with a green stripe instead of blue. Croatia has a red and white checkered coat of arms in the middle. Bosnia doesn't follow this pattern but rather has a yellow triangle, 6.5 stars, and a blue background. Belarus doesn't follow this pattern either and has a big red background, a green stripe on the bottom, and a traditional white ornamental pattern on the left side. Baltics: These three flags all have horizontal stripes of different colors. Lithuania has yellow, green, and red. Latvia has thick red stripes with white in the middle. And Estonia is blue, black, and white Middle East: These flags tend to have the Pan-Arab colors, red, black, white, and green. Yemen is red, white, and black, Iraq is this but with green Kufic script in the middle, Syria's is also like Yemen's but with two green stars in the middle, Jordan's is Palestine's flag but with a star in the red triangle, Qatar and Bahrain look the same but Qatar's is darker in color than Bahrain. Oman has white, green, and red horizontal stripes with a big red vertical stripe on the left side with the national emblem on the upper left. Lebanon has a tree in the middle. Saudi Arabia has white Arabic script with a dark green background And Kuwait has a black trapezoid on the left side The Stans: ...yeah that flag you kept guessing Central Asian countries for was Angola, in AFRICA. Central Asian flags don't look like that. The Stans tend to have a moon placed within it, while others have a sun. Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan both have suns, but one has a red background (Kyrgyzstan) while the other has a sky blue background with an eagle (Kazakhstan). Turkmenistan has different carpet patterns on its left side with a green background and small moon with five stars, Pakistan has a big moon on a green and white background, Tajikistan has a red white and green striped background (like Hungary) with a golden crown in the middle. Uzbekistan is blue, white, and green striped with a moon and stars on the blue stripe, and Afghanistan have vertical black, red, and green stripes with the coat of arms in the middle

Tips for flags (if this doesn’t get buried): Try to make something memorable out of it, whether it be a story or a landmark in the country, Ex: Belgium: black, yellow, red For Belgium i just think waffles so black is burned waffles, yellow is golden waffles, and red is waffles with jam. Another ex: Belarus: red and green with a pattern on the left. To me, the pattern on the left looks like a scarf so i just associate it with that and the fact that belarus is cold. Another ex: Croatia: It looks like there is a chess board on the shield so i just think “c in europe” and get to Croatia Hope this helps anyone!

I think Sporcle is the best place to learn them, I was able to do it this way eventually. Definitely go by continent until you’re more confident, and I think it’s good to try and learn the patterns (green, yellow, red for Africa, red, green, white and black for Arabic countries, red, white and blue stripes for Eastern Europe, light blue and white for Central America and red, yellow and blue for South America) these patterns help you get an idea based on neighbouring countries, but they do of course have a lot of exceptions (like Lithuania being in Europe and Myanmar in Asia but both having a green, yellow and red flag)
