As someone who's training to become a teacher for those ages the reason there is so many achievements is to encourage the kids! It helps young kids learn what they should be doing and helps engagement and morale of class. Young kids tend to do well with the small achievements!

Yep, they still force joined handwriting today. They don't do it in secondary school though, just in primary school. I remember going into secondary school and having joined up handwriting done in all my work then my teachers thought it looked so bad and told me to stop with it.
