So the challenge was to buy a high school car, or a first car if you will, but Jack also said a few times that it should be an enthusiasts car. I think pound for pound that the Mazda MX-5/Miata/Eunos really does meet that criteria perfectly. It's cheap, you can pick one up here in the UK for around £1500 in relatively good condition, it's rear wheel drive, if you rev the absolute nuts off of them you can get them to slide stock, and they're cheap to repair when those slides inevitably break something.

Personally, Toyota SW20 MR-2s are a good choice too. Sitting around 10K, and stock is a fun car. Do not let Toyota convince you it's a daily driver though. It can get good lap times, can be a beast at drag, and is a very agile car. It takes a bit of practice to overcome, but the snap oversteer isn't a big deal. Especially with the newer models. (1993 and onwards.)
