Thats instrument is called a sitar and anoushka is the daughter of the legendary sitar player Pandit ravi shankar who at one point was the guru of the beatles member george harrison and really the man responsible for bringing indian classical to the western audience. Anoushka herself is a 9 time grammy nominee

Anoushka is playing sitar as her father Ravi did with The Beatles. Whereas a guitar uses the 12 notes in an octave of the western scale a sitar has many more than 12 or what we would call quarter tones or microtones something that Jacob sometimes uses in his vocals like in Moon River. You'll want to check out that a Capella song too. This live version is like an acoustic version of the more electronic one that's nominated for a World Music Grammy on the album DJesse Vol 4 which has also been nominated for Best Album. Both Indian artists were on that one too. Also, about two months ago Jacob and Aurora released a live mash up version for Greenpeace in the middle of the Norwegian ocean which a LOT of KZbin reactors reacted to. That's called "A Rock Somewhere X The Seed".

While I also really like the album recording - this live performance is an auditory and emotional masterpiece! I had a similar reaction as you did .....

Sometimes the album versions of his original songs in retrospect come across like raw materials for him to do things to when he covers them, like he does when he covers other people's songs.
