There's a fairly recent BBC documentary "Jacob Collier - In the Room Where It Happens" that does a great job introducing Jacob and his career so far. You can find it on KZbin. The man is OFF THE CHARTS talented in ALL ASPECTS of music. HIs take on "Moon River", being an acapella arrangement, doesn't even showcase his immense abilities on keyboards, guitar, bass or percussion.

17:18 This was one of his most ambitious things to date, only rivaled by some collaborations he had done involving an orchestra, like All Night Long, but there are already some pretty ambitious videos among his earliest ones. "Started big and got bigger" is about right.

You seriously need to update. Found that guy some years ago on KZbin. He is by far the most talented musician actually alive. I would compare him to Mozart, (too many notes), to Bach (really complex arrangements), to Debussy (colours) and the Beatles (innovation in recording and editing). Besides he seems to be a pretty decent person, kind, humble, clever, pretty anything a person could wish to become. Right. I love that man. Not the way I live my wife, but when it comes to music I eventually found someone, who’s songs I cannot just play along on guitar, piano or drums without carefully analysing what the heck he did to get that effect. And we are not speaking about the incredible musicians, who love to work with him…

As for how long it takes, you'd understand if you saw how fast he can get work done. He did a livestream of his "IHarmU" series once where he arranges/records an elaborate and creative harmonization in under 45 minutes each, while talking to the audience even. I'm sure he spends more time on big projects, his latest song "Little Blue" took years, but he's capable of creating music at insane speeds.

Ya. This was like hearing a 10 year old critique The Godfather. Or a kid amazed that Michael Jordan can dunk ignoring all other aspects of the game . There are levels to JC that completely went over their heads. What JC is doing is seriously crazy. Reinventing the rules of music in such a beautiful way.

@@dannywarnock8822 :) Collier playing something at 'Half sharp' was maybe a new thing but hes hardly reinventing the rules of music. He is like frank zappa a personality that seelks to wow ppl with gimmicks and complexity even if the resultant music is often average or annoying. PLaying 8 instruments and , having lots of vocal layers does not make him a good songwriter. When you strip away the custom crocs, the goofy clothes, the therory discussions and the cover songs, you are left with a high energy guy that can play piano well, can sing in tune and has mostly bad original songs. That song where hes in a colored box and playing electric guirta is very poor

Guys, I've listened to this more times than I can figure and parts of it bring a tear to my eyes everytime. Jacob did all the recording and production in his home studio (basically his childhood bedroom). He had to listen to the entire song 93 times just to get all the costume changes for the video. Taste is so subjective but for me you can't rate the beauty and musicality of this rendition high enough. Just saying. Thanks for the reaction. Oh he did get a Grammy for it too.

First off who even thinks up an arrangement like this? Huge creativity factor alone. That was very different than anything I had ever heard before. I can't even begin to imagine how long would have taken to compose much less put it all together. BP1, I agree about the young man's wardrobe being akin to something BP2 might come up with for a Sunday live stream! 😂😁

He is full of joy for music. He loves harmony and chords. His music often illustrates there are vast ranges of harmony and chord structures which haven't been explored yet. In his "All Night Long" arrangement, he has cards with chords written out, and he makes videos explaining the entire production. He is a jazz musician, so not to everyones tastes. Best Wishes. ☮ _Jacob Collier's __#IHarmU__ Vol. _ are many snippets of a Patreon making music, then he harmonises. Delightful. "would he be completely sick of the song"... Bro, what are you talking about??? Did you even LISTEN? This is not some pop or rock music level where SONG matters, this is a MUSIC, not a SONG. He plays with the harmonies, how the tones are related to each other and it doesn't even matter what the actual SONG is.

I must admit, I find it a little bit sad that almost a decade into Jacob Collier's career, two British commentators of mature years should be unaware of him, and on first exposure to his genius, have such a toe-curling critical reaction. If anyone deserves to be thought of as a "national treasure" then JC is as credible a candidate for the title as we are ever likely to find. I suppose it is a risk of the format, that an _"authentic"_ reaction tells us more about the reactor than the artist.

I think he's more interested in the harmonies is the use of the semitones and microtones. It's the sound that drives him, not as much the actually song. He's fabulous live as well

i get that this comment might be a meme, but thinking music is in anyway objective would be criminal. I find his new a little more restrained arrangement of Bridge Over Troubled Water pretty much perfect, but this one, Moon River, doesn't flow the best, despite all the effort, that's not what makes a great song, i'd say like a 7,5-8/10 for me

@@gbulmer I looked into his Grammys and at least two were for arrangements, one was Flintstones osng adn another Moon river or Steview Wonder osng i forget. His originals are ok in my dreams or something ive watched a few but not grammy worthy. I think his hype and association (management contract ) with Quincy Jones makes ppl who vote for Grammys feel more inclined to vote for him He seems like a cross between a Christian Hillsong music concert and a 'look how clever i am i can play 7 instruments' but Prince could play many instrumenst too so cuold Stevie Wonder but their concerts ALSO had great original songs, I feel Collier is too gimmick oriented form his harmonys to his palying multiple inst in stage to his goofy facials and clothes and its all a hype/act to cover up for a lack of strong orig songs

@@CourtWatchAu Thank you for replying. He has 5 Grammys, 1 is an original song. He's the first and only British artist to win a Grammy for something on his first 4 albums. As I said, I have no quibble with you not liking his music. He is obsessed with harmony and chords. He's definitely not to everyones taste. It would be extremely worrying if everyone liked the same music. Some talented musicians deeply respect and approve of his groundbreaking music. Almost 150 of them contributed to this song. So I think there is good evidence he's more than a gimmick. I think I 'get' what you say about Quincy Jones. However, he manages other talented musicians who have no Grammy nominations. I think Collier set an expectation with his early one-man shows, and now his audiences expect that 'shtick'. Commenters who've seen him live claim he 'radiates energy'. Maybe that 'one-man band' vibe helps? Anyway, thank you for replying. Which musician (starting post 2010) would you recommend as more musical and much less gimmicky, other than obvious choices like Ren? If there's a particular song, I'll give it a try. Best Wishes. ☮
