You make a great point about what would've been if KZbin & our modern day tech was around in the 70's when Stevie & the likes of Marvin Gaye were at their peak. It's mind blowing to think, although arguably they did stretch what the tech of their day could do, the layering that Marvin did so much of (recording himself singing over the same changes at the same point in some songs so that you got 3 Marvins at once vocalizing loosely over the same changes, to magnificent effect on tracks like 'When did you stop lovin' me') and the daring instrumentation (for the time) Stevie was experimenting with on his music such as the Moog and the Clavinet, but for sure they would've embraced all this gear we have today wholeheartedly. Arguably, as much I love him, Jacob doesn't have Stevie's or Marvin's voice from their heyday, no way, and he'd be the first to say so, and both Stevie & Marvin had really good ranges that meant they could've done what Jacob's doing now, with all the vocal layering he does, although even they don't have Jacob's sheer huge range so maybe 4 octaves of voicings wouldn't have been possible, but Jacob *does* have their level of utter musical genius, the totally intuitive level of creativity, adding a lick here, a run there like it's nothing and it ending up sounding like it should have always been there. And he has a masterful understanding of form & structure, just as Stevie & Marvin did, so is comfortable pulling structures around and being more daring....just as Stevie & Marvin were. Also Stevie was a master multi-instrumentalist as Jacob is, so they can both just sit in the studio and create everything from scratch, well, almost everything, with it not being necessary to have a top bass player, a top pianist and a top drummer on hand whenever you get a great idea or a run of inspiration, it's all there to hand cos it's....one person, you just....go to the studio and create. That's how Stevie was able to realize his artistic vision exactly as he imagined it cos he could play everything, didn't have to spend ages trying to explain it to others, or write it out, and that is all the more remarkable when you know Stevie can't see. Jacob Collier is the Stevie Wonder & Marvin Gaye of our time. I haven't mentioned Michael Jackson cos I think with him it was different, he couldn't really play anything and relied heavily on others around him to help him realize his vision, be it Quincy Jones or Rod Templeton et al. He also often rarely wrote all his own songs, he was usually part of a team of writers, although he certainly wrote & created some of his classics by himself. With Michael the magic was all in his voice, and that's where the genius was created, in the studio, surrounded by a team including the likes of Quincy & Rod who were entirely on his level & knew what MJ wanted to achieve. He was also a trailblazer in creating the videos for his songs, so many of which are iconic, and of course his incredible dancing in those videos which captivated the World. That totally sets him apart from Marvin and Stevie, and even Jacob, who's videos are largely all shot the same way, clever as they are. But, yeah, no question Stevie & Marvin would've had a field day if they had access to any of the extraordinary music technology we have today. What chills me about Jacob though is that Stevie was largely spent as a musical tour-de-force by the mid 80s, his days of churning out phenomenal album after phenomenal album were over after about 1982 when Stevie was only in his early thirties, almost 40 years ago, and almost his entire back catalogue of great music dates from before then, no one really rates much of anything he's written since then. I guess he felt he had said all he really wanted to say by then, he's still a legend nonetheless. We know that Marvin was still producing fabulous music right up to within a year or two of his murder so it's very likely he would still have gone on producing little gems here and there were he to have lived another 10, 20 or maybe even 30 years. But this guy? I don't think he'll ever stop. He has so much energy, he's like a jumping bean, even now when he's in his mid/late 20s. I think he'll just continue to channel all that energy into making music, and even if he gets to the point that he's had enough, he'll probably become the Quincy Jones of the future, the best producer in the business who everyone wants to work with, cos he's already shown the World just how incredible a producer of his own stuff he is, many artists will want a piece of that magic and work with him (they are already). But he has Stevie's grasp of so many different genres (and that's clearly a big influence on him), just as comfortable producing a choral Christmas Song a cappella as he is creating the most authentic Brazilian grooves....and then going a step further and putting them in crazy time signatures, even the Brazilians don't often do that. His grasp of melody, rhythm and especially harmony is so complete that I don't think he'll ever get bored of creating something new and vibrant, so he could be doing this for years to come. Imagine how many Grammys he'll have wracked up by then! It's really quite scary.

@@BigSwoleMusick , you are comparing Jacob as a composer and multi-instrumentalist to lesser musicians. By the way, you mentioned "Take 6," but back in the 60s we had "The Swingle Singers" who did harmony. Jocob likely knows all these sources, I bet.

Jacob Collier is our very own Real Deal Sci-Fi Cosmic Super Hero Musician with a capitol M. It truly is a "Welcome back Mozart" moment in our lifetimes. I believe Quincy Jones agrees, despite also working closely with Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder. I think when you say the word "re-harmonization" what you probably really mean is "COMPLETE and TOTAL RE-IMAGINATION" :-)

IMO, Jacob Collier has taken modern music, in fact all music, to a new level. Sure, Jacob has used modern technology to a new level but, He's done it on his own!!! He does the techy stuff. The point I'm trying to make is, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder would probably have relied on musical, come techy guys outside of what they were doing musically. Jacob however, has moved the musical dial with his musical talent combined with his technical skills. He's out there on his own at this time. Musos will obviously take some of his inovations and use them but Jacob is still the inovator for the rest to follow. Just look at the talent he has brought to the fore. Fabulous talent, that up until now were slow walking along in the background. Now, via Jacobs collaborations with them, they going viral on youtube, So thanks Jacob for sharing your amazing gift is all I can say.

Great reaction! I love this little clip of Jacob and Tori recording - in the first bit, you can see Jacob cuing the harmonies he's asking Tori to sing - like Mozart, I suspect much of his music is composed first in his head and then transferred to instruments (rather than like most musicians who use their instruments to explore intervals, structures, etc.) kzbin.info/www/bejne/rpa7ZXakgbGofaM

Yes, Jacob was inspired by the phenomenal Take Six, but to follow the lineage listen to Gene Puerling's stunning vocal harmonies in his 70's group Singer's Unlimited, who inspired Take Six. The sound is dated but there's the original, astounding reharmonization. Listen to "Fool on the Hill."

I am a huge fan of Jacob, I have probably seen every video out there of him, concerts, interviews, etc. he is undoubtedly someone in a league of its own. But he is yet to develop the easiness with which Michael and the Beatles for instance would creat a masterpiece like Penny lane, PYT, etc. it is just a dumb exercise to compare them as we compare basketball players. Jacob to me seams to be in the direction to become as influential and important in music as Beethoven. I hope he continues growing as a musician ( even though it seems like there is almost nothing more to do xplore for such genius).
