I think Degrom has kind of “broke” pitching. There have always been 2 kinds of dominant pitchers for the last 20 years. 1. The Ace Starter- a starter with high end stuff- including a mid-high ninety fastball and a ++ breaking pitch to go along with two average options. This is the kind of pitcher who “sets-up” hitters by establishing different quadrants of the zone, changing the eye level of the hitter and then getting outs by forcing the hitter to extend on pitches outside of the zone. This guy can go two or three times through a lineup because he can vary his approach and location. 2. The lights out reliever- this is a guy with has two ++ pitches- including a power fastball. But that’s it. He can’t confuse the hitter with by throwing 4 kinds of pitches, changing speeds and eye level. It’s just case of- you cannot hit this, I dare you to try. The hitter has to cover the heater, and looks foolish on the breaking stuff. These pitchers can’t face a lineup more than once and they can hardly maintain their max effort stuff for more than one inning. 3. DeGrom- a pitcher with 2 closer level pitches that can go as long as a starter!! This guy throws two pitches to only two quadrants of the plate but he commands them at a Mariano Rivera level. He’s the answer to the question- what if a pitcher as good as Mariano Rivera was a starter??

Not just because I’m a Mets fan … pitchers usually have at least one flaw , be it control , not a 95 + arm , tipping pitches etc … he doesn’t, he’s 6 ft 6 with a 7 ft stride , 100 fastball, great slider that looks like a belt high fastball when he throws it … and he doesn’t walk anyone … I’ve never seen anything like it , let’s just hope he stays healthy.

He does have a flaw. His health. Since hes been throwing 100 he has missed most of the last two years.

Right. Usually aces limit walks and get strikeouts, but can still give up solo homers and hard contact on the fastball. Scherzer, Cole, Verlander, Ohtani are like that. Degrom is a total outlier.

Al Leiter’s the right guy on the network to talk about spin and spin efficiency, given that high, efficient spin is Jack Leiter’s calling card. Also, that chart of deGrom’s year-by-year velo is misleading because it’s missing 2015, when he averaged well over 95mph. But his velo dropped in 2016, perhaps in part from all the innings he threw the previous year, deep into October.
