I discover Orlinski, Dimash and a young man named Avi Kaplan around the same time. All three classically trained and the two tenors are just spectacular in their abilities. Kaplan had just come out of college and had just received a letter from the L.A. Opera House. The next day, he received a call form a young man who was wanting to begin a group to go to the NBC A Capella Sing off. Avi is a Basso Profundo and 1. knew there were not a lot of Bass Arias and 2. loved A Capella singing. He chose to go with the group who after many weeks of competing, won the sing off that year. He remained with them for 6 years and he fell apart from the grueling pace of recording and touring left the group. He needed to heal, and he wrote songs just for that. He found solace in his cabin deep in the forests of Tennessee and began writing. Not classical songs, but folk, Americana Folk, some western, some closer to country. It took over three years for his body, mind , spirit and emotions to heal. I go to him when I have too much pressure. I go to Orlinski for his stunning sound, and I go to Dimash for to be absolutely entertained. All three of these men are stunning in their own right and all three of them are great.

Well Pam, it seems as though you and I are a match!! What a great message you just sent me. I too was in a singing group for 6 years and how I didn’t end up in a mental institution I’ll never know. The infighting and jealousies were terrible. The touring schedule was horrible and we were at times asked to go on tour and not get paid - while the promotors and record label made money! The music business is very very tough and has little to do with music!! I’ll check out Avi. Thank you.

Orlinsky is an absolutely wonderful singer but I have discovered his equal with the young Brazilian male soprano Bruno de Sa -amazing as well - watched him in the over four hour long opera by Leonardo Vinci called "Alexander in the Indies" and I was so captivated and couldn't believe it wasn't a woman singing. Also saw him as Nero in Handel's opera "Agrippina" and his acting skills are very good as well.

Wow. A Leonardo opera?? Did you like the music?
@kaloarepo288
@kaloarepo288 Жыл бұрын
@@BangkokVoiceCoach This Leonardo was not the Renaissance artist and scientist but a later baroque Leonardo Vinci who came from the deep south of Italy and was an extremely successful composer of operas mostly in Naples and Rome. Not on the same level as Handel or Vivaldi but with some extremely beautiful moments. His music is very vigorous and emphatic with marked use of trumpets and military style instruments.If you have the time watch Franco Fagioli (another wondrous falsetto singer from Argentina) sing Vinci's aria "Sto solcando un mar severo" which means "I'm traversing a cruel sea" from the opera "Artaserse" You will be astonished by the power and versatility of this man's voice though his diction tends to be a little imprecise which is understandable when you are singing at that pace and power. I have the complete performance of the opera on DVD in a French production . It's important to understand the context of this aria(song) this prince has been accused by all including his own father and his fiance of having murdered the king (King Xerxes of ancient Iran) and here he compares his predicament to being like a ship in a storm and the ship has been stripped of its sails, its rigging and its rudder etc -and its getting dark!

Very interesting and talented young man! You’re right about the Polish and singing in English. I recall the first time I visited Poland, my tesciowa (mother in-law) brought me to see a Polish choral group. One of the songs they performed was “My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean”. Only clue to this was my recognition of the melody- the lyrics had evidently been taught phonetically by a non-English speaker. Still a fond memory. I will look out for Jakub again in future. It's wonderful. The countertenor voice has never been one of my favorites because they always sound artificial andf forced, but in their case it sounds natural. There are only a few original castrati recordings so old and poor that it cannot be appreciated; But I think his voice is exactly close. The only negative and I hope I'm wrong is that it's ephemeral since warming up your voice by breaking dancing, the elasticity of your muscles, is something you can only do now. It does not matter if it is shining with great intensity.

I was trying to think of this guy's name last week having been forced to tollerate a row of six, so-called "countertenor" listening to the baroque music used extensively in the Summer Festivals. NONE of these referred to countertenors were true countertenors. They are all falcetto, probably backed up with female hormones. Orlinski is one of the truest countertenors that I have heard in the last 50 years and a fine singer. It is a pleasure to listen to him and elevates the soul.

@@BangkokVoiceCoach incidentally, Orlinski may have the typical Polish "ski" tucked onto his name, but I really thought he was East German in origin. - that could mean anything. If I remember correctly, he had a lovely father who was a Butcher ( Metzger, in German.) - just like ? Dvorak. I remember the interviews he gave as he first created the sensation over his voice. So what would he sound or look or act like if he weren't "sincere"? How does one determine sincerity in a singer? I agree that he is terribly handsome (and quite frankly, in our world today being physically attractive is way more important than it probably should be), but there are other counter tenors who have just as good, if not better voices, IMHO. So, I'm sorry, but your argument just doesn't convince me.

A lot of singers “fake it” when they sing. I’ve seen it so many times. I feel his response to the muscular he sings is very genuine and honest. I agree he doesn’t necessarily have the best voice. But he’s a lovely singer ti listen too because he doesn’t sound over-trained.

I think it is important to watch him as a student in a master class singing Monteverdi given by Pablo Heras-Casado. The criticisms of Orlinski were very marked and very pertinent. I have been following his career here on KZbin since watching that masterclass a few years back, and I have seen him develop, but I still see some of the weaknesses Heras-Casado pointed out. It is interesting that you point out his "sincerity" because I feel that is something he actually lacks. Can I suggest some artists nowadays do trade on their good looks and sex-appeal on KZbin ?
@BangkokVoiceCoach
@BangkokVoiceCoach Жыл бұрын
I've seen the masterclasses with Joyce di Donato at the Julliard. A lot of it was about his huge success on KZbin so, you have a point, it certainly has impacted his career. People want him in productions because he has such a huge following and if this is because he looks so good, you can't blame him for using that to achieve further success. Most pop singers use their sexuality to increase their fandom. Why not classical artistes, if they can? Extending the reach of classical music, especially to younger people, can help it stay alive for future generations. JJ Orlinski has certainly given the counter tenor a voice a very helpful boost.

He uses jaw movements to articulate rhythm and to adjust timbre. Unnecessarily. Wasted energy. An Americanised English pronunciation. (End instead of and). He sings the two vowels of diphthongs like a crooner (short-long instead of as lyric bel canto voices should: long-short). impressive, though. Love "spitting". But will his career last longer than 20 years with this technique?
@Jmedieval
@Jmedieval Жыл бұрын
He lacks proper closure of the vocal chords which makes him too breathy on some notes, as well as a bit high larynx because of too much straight tone which cause also the tone to be rigid and without enough release and depth. The larynx doesn't floats freely. If he had a good technique he could have been a really great singer because he has all the other components.
@BangkokVoiceCoach
@BangkokVoiceCoach Жыл бұрын
Hello Jmedieval. I believe it hard for countertenors to get the kind of full closure to which you refer. As it's a falsetto voice, it doesn't use the full depth of the vocal cords. The straight tone is a choice that JJ Orlinski makes and people seem to really like it. I get a lot of comments on my channels from people who don't like vibrato in general!! I imagine that Orlinski's voice is quite small live int he theatre.

I think that he has no problems with his technique. To me, he sounds perfectly clear and effortless. He has chosen to limit vibrato and to my taste it is great. Vibrato often becomes a mannerism or way to hide imperfections. He uses it when he wants to and feels it right to be used. If you feel his singing is not to your taste, just stop listening to him. There are lots of singers who use lots of vibrato, maybe way too much.

So who do you refer to in mispronunciation as you didn’t make that clear? No point in making a comment of accusation without stating the crime. You just wave a general flag. Are you capable of being more specific?

Obvs a very talented man with an exceptional flawless falsetto however my interest is genuinely in his performance and beautiful voice. Me thinks the fawning over this artist is a little suspect and has an undercurrent of discomfort for the observer

Thank you William for sharing Jakub Josef Orlinski’s beautiful interpretation of Handel’s Baroque oratorio! What a lovely way to start the day! I must say that opera and breakdancing together is rather groundbreaking… He’s a talented, surprising countertenor full of sincerity indeed. ☺️

hi , I am Thai but living in Stockholm. I have recently got to hear Jakub singing from youtube and yes fel in love with his singing and his sincerity. I am going to his concert here in Stockholm on 25/8 Then I saw your vdo , a very good musical explanation. I myself have sung in choir in alto but know very little about the technicality of singing. Thanks. Pim

He does shift into chest voice - but his chest voice is so bright that you hardly notice. Orlinsky hardly has a break between the registers or at least covers very well. As he gets older it will change - you have a darker chest voice and a darker counter voice too

Hi William, In his long interviews (mostly in Polish), Jakub Orlinski quite often said that he was not a typical opera singer (he often performs with his best friends in quite a few music genres including Jazz etc. so he finds interests not only in so called classical music and is a versatile artist, although Baroque music seems to be his main interest). Hence his "jazzy" sound which seems to attract many young people to classical music. He is never going to become very "operatic" as he is just not interested in focusing on the opera only. At this stage he is still too young, energetic and he wants to experiment and taste something different as well. Hence opera purists and conservatives will always criticise him for his singing style and technique. What I can say to them... "If you do not like him as a singer, just go on and look for those you like". He gets huge enthusiasm from the audience but also get quite a lot of criticism (sometimes envy) for his approach (and looks). Well... Life is life...😁 I will always root for him as he has made countertenor singing much, much more interesting and attracted thousands if not millions of young people mostly to Baroque and classical music too. His voice is unusual, beautiful with his personality to match it.

I think he’s awesome and did from the word Go. He’s a revolutionary, challenging the tired old guard and that takes courage and a certain “don’t give a **ck” attitude. ❤️I agree with you. It’s not an operatic sound and that’s exactly why it works and people love it. 🎶

@@BangkokVoiceCoach We have to add he has a lot of respect and love for the audience and generally for the human being which shines through during his performances and interviews. OH Caroline--I am so damn lucky. I didn't know him and just happened to see a You Tube Video with Orlinksi singing Purcell's Cold Song and I was blown away. The drama of his performance, his intensity, not to speak of his voice and his physical beauty) were amazing. So I listened to a bunch of other of his videos and...lo and behold, I got in the mail a program from Cal Performances in Berkeley and there he was--on March 13 , 2021 I think, (2 days before my BD!) performing at Berkeley's small concert Hall (Hertz). I didn't give a thought to the price of the ticket (I usually do!) and sat in the 2nd row. It was a very varied program and I was thrilled that he sang Purcell's "Music for a While" which my mother used to play on her 78 recording with Alfred Deller so I'd known and loved the song since childhood. He was so natural and adorable and his singing was sublime and I loved his accompanst. But I must also say that, though I am OLD (now 78) I am not dead yet and he is so damned gorgeous I was quite in love with him. Painfully. I dearly hope you get to see him I person too! From the Long-Winded Lady (an old New Yorker writer) who just moved to Spokane, WA. WHY?
