It reminds me of one of those beautiful Randy Newman songs like for a Pixar movie with beautiful "haunting melancholic chords" - like "When She Loved Me." My two favorite moments: 1) Judith Owen 7:28 the way Jacob sets up the ii-V that goes to IV at the absolute last possible moment between the first "send me a line" and the second. That descent into the ii. The way it just plops and feels both abrupt and also perfectly prepared. Stunning. 2) Colin Johnson 9:25 the way Jacob ends this phrase on the gentlest, daintiest passing chord. That chromatic motion from the bass on "leave you" how it points you SO HARD into "before." There are chunks of this video where I love the whole damn clip more, but specifically the harmony that's going on in these two parts makes me come back again and again and again just in awe of how rad it is.

If I had to guess, this one was a little bit of simplicity among the extreme reharms, and that makes it more impactful probably. Its chord progression helps it too
@CatProductionStudios4 жыл бұрын
Just intonation. Jacob is obsessed (as he should be since it's fucking awesome) with a method of tuning chords (especially triads) based on the hormonic series of certain notes instead of just traditional equal temperament intervals. It's essentially more in tune chords that are just so awesome. Google will probably explain it better than me if you want to know more.
@Graham_M4 жыл бұрын
Basically he tunes chords so that the frequencies of the notes have simpler ratios. Notes with simple radios sound good to our ears (an octave is 1:2, a fifth is 2:3, etc.) He tunes major chords with a ratio of 4:5:6, so to our ears they sound very nice. Plus that song is just beautiful lol
@PierreRegensburger4 жыл бұрын
What people said about the tuning is correct, but also when Colin sings "and there beneath the stars ill leave you" Jacob uses minor IV (minor plagal cadence) to create a bittersweet feeling. its the "classic Christmas chord" that everyone talks about. on the word "you" the chord is spelled as B7/C , the notes A and C in that chord are borrowed from the minor IV.
