Religio Medici is a spiritual memoir by English physician and author Sir Thomas Browne, published in 1643... Translated as 'The Religion of a Doctor'... Religio Medici expresses Browne's views on a wide range of scientific and religious subject because some of these views were unorthodox at the time and controversial.... Browne may not have intended the track to be published. It was only in 1642 when an unauthorised copy went into circulation that Browne released an official version for consumption the following year....

Religio Medici ( The Religion of a Doctor) 1643 Thomas Browne • Thomas Browne was a polymath who had a vast knowledge of many diverse fields like Medicine, science and religion. Browne received his education from Oxford University and famous for ‘Religio Medici’. The widely circulated manuscript was obtained by a printer and published in 1642 but reissued in an authorized edition in the following year 1643. • A spiritual testament- “ a private exercise directed to myself.” • Theme:- the importance of separating one’s attitudes on science and religion. • The work affirms the author’s Christian faith but refers to such a wide diversity of topical thought that the book transcends the normal barriers of devotional literature, becoming a fascinating and allusive investigation of the richness of God’s creation. Browne is both sceptical and celebratory, erudite and fantastical in his attitudes, and the whole is realized in some of the century’s finest prose, firm and yet idiosyncratic. The book includes two fine prayers in verse, and numerous sections on subjects ranging from the occult to the nature of sleep. • Inspired the title of John Dryden’s great poem ‘Religio Laici’ • Samuel Pepys in his diaries complained that ‘Religio was cried up to the whole world for its wit and learning’ • In Varginia Woolf’s opinion ‘Religio Medici’ paved the way for all future confessional, private memoirs and personal writings. • In 20th century, the Swiss psychologist Carl Jung used the term ‘Religio Medici’ several times in his writings.
