Never considered not tightening a keyed chuck without using the key. I learned something new.
@ellieprice363
@ellieprice363 10 ай бұрын
I wonder if it would be possible to design a spanner wrench to tighten the chuck by precisely gripping on the small milled slots on the OD of the chuck body. I’m sure this is overkill and not practical but I just can’t stop the old mind from wandering.

@@ellieprice363 I think it would be doable and much more handy than a chuck key.

I have a Jacobs chuck that I bought in the early 70's. I have been using it for both drill press and lathe as it is the only one with a #2 Morse taper. Thanks for the video keep on keeping on.

I picked up an old Harbor Freight bench top milling machine and have been fixing it up. In the process of making a dial for the Y axis, I needed to drill a cross pin hole. Now this is my first mill and I didn't have much tooling for it yet, and it only cam with a hold down set. I did purchase a cheap set of R8 collets. I have several Jacobs chucks for my lathes, as well as a couple chineesium chucks. they all had JT to Morse taper shanks on them. I didn't want to turn one down to a straight shank, so I rutted around for a old drill motor to steal a chuck from. Couldn't find one, but looking thru my toolbox I found a cheap right angle drill adapter with a small chuck on it. I had picked it up couple of years ago from a garage sale or flea market and never used it. It was brand new in the box when I got it. It had come from Harbor Freight. The chuck was threaded on to the right angle adapter and had a SAE thread in it. After making a threaded arbor for it, I noticed it was laser etched Jacobs Chuck China! Did the job well! MJ

True. A production shop beats those sweet old super chucks to heck. Then we used them some more. I always hogged them down in two or the three key holes so I wouldn't spin out. That's tough to witness, spinning a bit in a 300 rpm lathe like mine. Oww! There's an old work dumpster find Super behind me. Poor thing.

You can see the bit turning in the chuck at the end of the test, first test with hand tightened chuck, with unfaced stock being drilled you are calling 'wobbly', looks like a centering bit. Nice video though, appreciate that you took the time to make it.

Hey Mr. Pete, I tested your presentation today for myself. I plowed a #7 center drill 5/8" deep into 1018 steel with only hand tightening. Then I followed up with drilling 3/8" diameter hole 3-1/2" deep, again only hand tight.

Danaher bought Jacobs and move most manufacturing to China almost 20 years ago. If it's stamped made in the USA it's the original Jacobs, if it's not it's a Danaher Jacobs made in China.

There were a few steps in that process. First Danaher moved Jacobs and many other companies into Apex, a joint venture with Cooper. Bain Capital then purchased Apex, shut down US operations, and moved everything to China. TYVFM, Mitt Romney

I cannot verify the quality but the newer Jacobs Super chucks are made in China. All of mine are the older ones made in the U.S.A. I have rebuilt a couple of them that I got with worn out jaws and they work like new now. I have from 8-1/2N to 20N. The 14N must have been thrown on a lot of equipment in the day because they seem to show up everywhere. Also if you are rebuilding the Super chucks make sure of the kit that you use, the Made in U.S.A use a different kit than the made in China Super chucks use.

Hi MR Pete good video . one thing i don't like about the import keyless chucks is the jaws turn when your tightening up a small drill on a mill. also Shars keyless chucks they tell you to use a wrench on the keyless chuck or voids the warranty . I have bought two used supper chucks and if they didn't take photos i did not get them . if you see wear on the teeth they have been used a lot . Thanks JM

I went back to keyed chucks on my mill after using keyless for a long time. I had an Albrecht copy and crashed it so badly it jammed shut. Taking it apart I found the balls had pressed dimples into the body. I still have a real Albercht on a large drill press which I can't crash to badly and it works well. I have both older American made and Chinese made super chucks in 1/2 and 3/8. The finish on the US made ones is better, but there is nothing wrong with the Chinese ones I have at least. Runout is the same and they all work "keylessly" for smaller drills as demonstrated. Drills can be changed almost as fast as a proper keyless. Having taken both US and Chinese apart i found they changed the size and quantity of balls at some time before moving production to China. The older ones are a full around the circumference with 5/32 balls and the body has the lower race integrally ground. The newer ones have a plastic race that keeps the balls evenly space and run on a hardened washer. As you said, rebuilding isn't worth it, as I learned the hard way buying kits trying to match up with different variations 😅. An advantage over the Albrecht type is the shorter body which helps with tight setups going from a spotting drill to a jobber and then chucking reamer on the j head for example.

Can you provide maybe a video how to determine the taper on a shaft? I have several tools that have tapered shafts for insertion into a machine. A Morse #1, #2, etc. tapers are confusing to me. I have researched online for "how to measure tapered shafts" and got an online calculator and a lot of text, but it isn't helping me determine what I have. In short, for my drill press, I would like to buy a keyless chuck and want to determine the proper tapered shaft to buy. Now, for my drill press, I can't look in my manual and get the size taper of the chuck shaft, but I have other much older tools that I need to make sure before purchasing. Thanks for your videos.

I love super chucks, I've got a few of them that all came from various lots of random tools I've bought. So they're all old, made in the USA, and all work beautifully. It really breaks my heart that these old American names in quality tool making are now being worn like skin suits by these inferior tools made in foreign lands. What happened to this once great and proud industrial giant.

Labor unions must be blamed for a large portion of America’s industrial capacity moving overseas. When hourly raises and benefits are increased without a corresponding increase in productivity companies must close their doors or move to a cheaper labor market.

The original Super chucks didn't have the fancy machining and large stamping on the top of the collar, the collars looked just like standard chucks. They stamped Super Chuck etc. on the body like the regular chucks as well so they're tougher to spot. The current chucks are made in China and are laser engraved on both the collar and the body. I avoid the laser ones on Fleabay, only bid if it says "Hartford Conn" on it.

No views, posted 1 minute ago... you're either 'Burning the Midnight Oil' or 'Up With the Chickens'. I thought I was the only one in the world who said, 'They're really proud of...', in relation to a high price. Up, up & away... it's Super Chuck! I just spent the last 3 weeks sick. Trying to still be productive I spent some money on Ali Express, China's eBay, which is FULL of machine tool manufacturers. I pushed hard finding the best price & free S&H on coated carbide end mills, indexable tool holders & inserts and diamond abrasive products. Learned a lot about who's manufacturing inserts & which US- sold insert company's coding they use on their inserts. If a Chinese manufacturer is using Mitsubishi's or Iscar's coding, what's the chance THEY are the one's making them FOR Mitsu or Iscar? I'm not of the opinion all Chinese stuff is junk. I have already received some of the product & I've been impressed w/ the quality. By the way, I got a ½" keyless chuck for $7.21. I bought the exact same chuck from a US dist, sold as Chinese, for nearly $40. I also found a 3 axis version of the same 2 axis on my 2nd hand mill. Previous owner paid $250 + cost of scales 10+ yrs ago. Got it for $135. If you have the time, (what else does someone officially ancient have?), there are extremely good deals on AliEx. Great vid on Jacobs' Super C! As always. Re: Unimat Does it have a Morse taper tailstock socket? The Sherline's is MT0 & struggles to hold chucks; really struggles... Thanks for bein' up w/ the chickens... GeoD
