38:23 as a person who really tries to put thought behind gift giving, this topic really had me thinking. I can see why Mandii felt the way she felt about the surprise party and I can also see how “it’s the thought that counts”. Her surprise party really wasn’t about her and in that particular relationship that’s what she needed at the time. When I buy gifts I tend to buy something that is personalized, something a person wouldn’t normally buy for themselves and has nothing to do with how much it did or didn’t cost. My sister likes bracelets, so I pick her out a bracelet that has something on it related to being a sister or has the birthstone of her children. Same thing with my mom, except with a necklace. If you listen to people you have a better idea of what they do and don’t like!

The surprise birthday debacle is a perfect example of how hard it is to deal with a narcissist… Mandi’s point was he didn’t listen TO HER or HER desires. He actually did the exact opposite and was thinking more of himself and the narrative in his own head… he centered his wants more …essentially making her day about him and his efforts. That’s FUCKED just like the car example… effort can in fact be malicious at worst and simply misguided at best…people yearn to be HEARD and SEEN…you feel me?

I agree with Mandi about the gifts. The party wasn’t for her it was about himself. He could’ve taken her to a nice spa resort gone the biggest package and pampered her. He could’ve taken her on a nice vacation and have massages on the beach. Men really think that the if they would like it their partner would and that’s just not true. When plans involve other people especially like the surprise party example it’s no longer about the person being celebrated. It’s about that man wanting to look like a good partner not actually be a good partner.
