My Mom used to play this when I was young in the 1970's...I loved the melody and the lyrics! I was probably 7 or 8 years old when I heard this...Still it resonates!

I saw this live at the village gate in 1968. It was so very special. It continues to be special today over fifty years later. This wisdom helps me be a better person and look at life through different eyes.

High school was such a DRAG!, except for one inspiring English teacher. Mr. Johnson took us on a field trip in 1968 to see the musical, "Jacques Brel is Alive and Well..." I went back to see it 4 times that year, and 46 years later, this song still sends shivers down my spine. Crank this song up loud so my deaf ears can hear it while they are lowering the ropes of my casket!

You saw the show in the most emotionally potent year you could possibly have seen it. It must have taken all the cast's strength to go out and sing that song after the assassinations, after the police riots in Chicago, after the far more savage crushing of the youth in Paris and Prague.

I went to a catholic HS in northern NJ during the 1960s. A nun took us to the village in 1968 to see Jacques Brel is Alive & Well... (A nun took us--so it was OK with our parents!) I absolutely have always loved this song. I just found the piece of notebook paper I wrote this song on with the guitar chords in 1968. I'm thrilled that I just found this video--I can't stop watching it! This song should be re-released--it would be so meaningful right now, in 2019.

The message is clear in this song ... I wish we can all live with this song in our hearts.... share your love with everyone you meet, maybe just maybe we would all get along and the world will be a better place. Don’t be afraid to tell someone you love them...... your always in my prayers uncle Joe......

Brilliant. I am lucky to have it on dvd I love Jaques Brel and covet my Marc Almond and Scott walker recordings of this superb Belgian composer, but these are special.

Ivanov, THANK YOU SO MUCH for posting this wonderful song. I've "Jacques Brel" five times (lucky me), including the original in NY in 1968. Elly Stone's voice knocks your socks off. And this song, which is the finale of the show, is one of those songs that says EVERYTHING. It belongs up there with John Lennon's "Imagine". Thanks again

Fantastic show great cast, and music , Joe Masiell had a sensational voice an extremely talented man. His father was a famous Tenor in Italy.. the apple didn’t fall far from that tree… Joe happened to be my Uncle , his Father my grandfather.. both I’m sure are together singing in heaven the way it should be… love you guys,,,

I read somewhere that your uncle made performing in this show the mission of his life after this movie-that he was in a production of it somewhere every year for the last couple of decades, until his early passing. My condolences to your family for his loss and my celebration of the remarkable person he must have been to devote himself to these songs.

When I was about 16 (1955/6) I was in a production of "Merton of the Movies" with Joe in St. John's in the Village, church, NYC. Joe not much older, decided to drop the "o" from his last name (Masiello) so as not to be stereotype cast as an Italian American street kid. He was very kind to this neophyte, and lots of fun.

I saw the Canadian cast in Vancouver while I was at university. It changed my life along with Sondheim. Have to give the originals full credit for creating this great show!

Donald - your version of this song is still one of my favourites. In fact, it's really the only solo version I've heard that really nails the last two verses. Thank you the many happy memories your music has given me through the years.

I agree it sounds better in French. When we moved to Amboise in France we stumbled across French Chanteuse Denise Lebrun the star of Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris. They were close friends as she was with Edith Piaf. We are going to play her recording of this song at our wedding 4 June 2018. She is tickled pink.

Beautifully done. The only problem is that the Jacques Brel lyrics are profound, and the English version, which is not a translation, is trite and superficial.
