​@@lucblin5302 Dit relatief onbekende lied...... 🤭. Iedereen in Nederland van boven de zestig kent dit lied. Velen beschouwen het als het mooiste Nederlandse lied ooit. De Nederlandse tekst is overigens veel poetischer dan de Franse tekst. Dat ligt aan de meer dan uitstekende vertaling.

It's fascinating that the Brel family, although originally from Flanders, used to live in the big city Brussels and adopted French as their native language (language shift). And yet Jacques Brel still was able to speak Flemish and "Mijn Vlakke Land" sounds like a wistful hymn to his lost roots at the Flemish North Sea coast. In Portuguese this melancholic-nostalgic feeling is called "saudade", so "Mijn Vlakke Land" is kind of Brel's Flemish saudade.

Although their are still more Flemish speaking Belgians then French speaking, most people in the world think that Belgium is French. The Flemish spirit is quit humble comparing to the French and the Netherlands, but their is a fire within that you can find in Brel , Lara Fabian ("Je suis malade"), Johnny Hallyday (the French Elvis Presley with more than 110 million records sold worldwide; is real name was Smet and his father a singer from Brussels) and Stromae (see "Formidable"; his real name is Flemish: Paul Van Haver).

It's fascinating but quite normal. The brain never forgets, at a deep level, one's mother-tongue, one's "moedertaal", the language of one's cradle. At a daily, superficial level, the mother tongue may fall into disuse, but at a deep brain levels, where language and thought are rooted & connected, the language in which a baby is first taught to make sense of the world and find meaning, is not forgotten because it was the first foundation.

De vertaling van Les Plat Pays door Ernt van Altena is een van de mooiste nederlandstalige gedichten die ik ken. Ieder nederlandstalig kind zou het op de lagere school moeten leren (waarderen). Het blinkt vooral uit in de klank herhaling en ritme (vlakke land , lage luchten), elementen die juist het Franse chanson zo poetisch maken. Natuurlijk de tongval en zang van Brel dragen daar sterk aan bij, maar de woorden op zich zijn al heel krachtig.

Frida the Blonde is the personification of the Germanic roots of the Flemish, while Margot is a figure of Wallonia, which is French-speaking and therefore Latin. Was it not Jacques Brel who said, that better mutual understanding between the two Belgian peoples can only be achieved, if every Flemish lives one year in Wallonia and every Wallonian one year in Flanders? Due to my job I am in Belgium quite often, so I have been using the occasion to speak with people from both parts of the country again and again. +Daan DB Flemish is Dutch. Just about every single linguist refers to it as a form of standard Dutch (Belgian Dutch). It does have a bit of a different accent from Dutch from the Netherlands and several different words, but people from the north and the south can usually understand each other without any problems whatsoever. Something like that honestly doesn't have a right to be called a language. Individual Dutch dialects (even Hollandic dialects) have more right to be called languages than Belgian Dutch. The original meaning of the term "Dutch" btw includes everyone speaking Dutch dialects within the Low Countries (sometimes with some German territories included), whereas the original term "Flemish" only includes less than half of the region you nowadays call "Flanders". People from Antwerp, Leuven, Turnhout, Hasselt, Genk... weren't Flemish until the 19th/20th Century.

I'm from the Low Countries myself and I disagree. So do many of my friends and family. It's not Dutch Flemish and Belgian Flemish btw. Linguists would use the term "Dutch" and "Belgian Dutch" when trying to differintiate them from each other. Anyways, neighbouring Dutch dialectial groups often possess more differences than Northern Dutch and Belgian Dutch. It's mainly just the accent that's different, and the accent doesn't make the language. I also have a different accent from people from Holland, yet I still live within the Netherlands and speak standard Dutch. Besides, Standard Dutch has the same rules in both the Netherlands and Flanders. Changes that are passed through, are passed through in both the Netherlands and Flanders. That's the task of the Nederlandse Taalunie. This is the most important language organization of Dutch and it considers Dutch from the Netherlands and Belgium the same language. So does almost every politician or official. When an accent and several words are different from each other, that doesn't necessarily mean it's a different language.

Of course I have heard about the disputes between the Walloons and the Flemish, and I have personally experienced similar situations in other places. Still, I think that all borders are more or less artificial, and that we, as a single species, should try to coexist as peacefully and friendly as possible. I know that this may look naive to many people, but the hard fact is that all the little things that we now care so much about, might be forgotten one or two generations later, so why bother so much?. Personally, I don't understand Dutch, but I have enjoyed this song very very much, and I feel carried away by Jacques' words and feelings, as well as the music. I wish he had more versions in Dutch, as well as in French. Cheers.

excuse me, but he First wrote this in dutch but under pressure of his agency he translated it in french and so the original became a b-side , so it's the other way around! he was a Belgian all the way, he mastered the 3 languages perfectly there is also a german version of this...so something to think about... he wanted to tribute the region he was born in, VLAANDEREN near the state capitol that's also one of the reasons that he speaks so well French

j'ai toujours adoré Brel. C'est inutile de dire pourquoi, c'est évident quand on l'entend. Je suis d'origine belge par mon défunt père flamand d'Oostende ; j'ai toujours de la famille là bas ; ils parlent français mais leur langue est le flamand , et j'aime entendre cette langue qui est un peu la mienne bien que je ne la parle malheureusement pas ; j'aime ces versions en flamand que je trouve encore plus touchante par leur accent. J'ai découvert Brel en néerlandais et j'en suis passionné, je pense que la voix du sang résonne en écoutant ces chefs d œuvre . La Belgique flamande est très belle et pleine de charme. Merci Jacques

Btw Belgians are not "2000 years old", Galaxia is referring to the province of the old Roman Empire: Belgica, wich has nothing to do with modern Belgium, besides I don't think Galaxia is a Belgian, as he/she described how "we" (Netherlands) look at "you" (Belgians), somewhat above this text (in Dutch). But above all: Jacques Brel remains a wonderfull artist, who didn't write songs because of political reasons but because of they came right out of his heart and had the talent to share his feelings to a larger audience.

He sings about that part of the country he loves so much, he loves nature and the sea, those were allways his passions. And the also supersticious belief that he was born in poverty is make belief also, his father owned a carton packaging company in Brussels ( And he was a defender of the Flemish Language, hence the reason why Jacques and his dad didn't get along to well), so he comes from money, but since JAcques didn't want to invest himself in the company to take it over, he decided to move to France, to Paris, where he could pursue his destiny as a poet , writer , composer and singer (he never beleived himself a singer, but more a troubadour a chanting storyteller). What is true is that he lived in poverty the first years, untill he got his break, as his family didn't support him in this venture. And he choose the French language, as it offered him more freedom in expression of emotions, something he allways lacked in Flemish, and that is the only reason why he sang mainly in French, there is no other reasoning, nothing, people try to look for deeper meanings, while there isn't one, he was just a genius, a simple man, who loved his craft, no political agenda, nothing, he loved what he did, and he shared it with the rest of us, so that we can enjoy eternally

Yes of course Brel is legendary, world legendary. And I am very glad to hear he defended the Flemish language...which makes him even more Belgian (about which there was absolutely no discussion nor any issue and was the most normal and evident thing at the time, only until recently people are indoctrinated by propaganda of the separatist movement), he and his contemporaries were very right the Flemish language exists, people still had the right to think straight back then it seems. Everyone knows Flemish is a different language independent from Dutch, and even Dutch was invented in Belgium, let alone Flemish is ours. You must know only the provinces of West- en Oost-Vlaanderen were part of the Medieval County of Flandria, defined by the cities Bruges and Ghent, which were two big and important metropolis. Brel sings: from Bruges to Ghent. That is the honest and true description and definition of "Vlaanderen", referring to the County of Flandria. He had no separatist intentions on his mind whatsoever. I'm not sure why you would involve his background in the conversation. I also don't agree the "only" reason you stated he "chose" the french language. Belgium is bilingual, my whole family is perfectly bilingual, almost all Belgians I know are bilingual. Bilinguality was never an issue. As a kid in the 80s I wasn't even aware so to speak, family members were married with French-speaking Belgians, which was completely normal and logical. There was no sense of division, it was all Belgian and an integrated part of Belgian culture. That's the main reason, he as a Belgian, is singing in French, French is one of our languages and deeply integrated in Belgian culture. BE and France are both Latin countries, were born and grew up together. There shouldn't even be made an issue out of this. Brel is clearly singing "From Bruges to Ghent", which is the pure and honest definition of (the younger county of) Flanders and doesn't violate (the much older) Belgium in any matter. Sorry for this long read, I hope you, people out there, enjoyed it.

Schengen is afgeschaft en de contacten zijn meer dan ooit bestaand tussen Nederland en Vlaanderen. Zo vind ik het goed. In Antwerpen wonen veel Nederlanders waarmee we ons goed verhouden. Als ik Nederland bezoek word ik steeds correct behandeld. Ik heb ook leuke vrienden in Nederland tot in Groningen. De noodzaak tot een vereniging zie ik niet. Jullie Belgen in Belgie beseffen niet hoe Belgisch "Vlaanderen" is, hoe diep Belgisch en Romaans "Vlaanderen" en ook de mensen zijn. Belgie heeft geen twee mentaliteiten, die significant zijn. Elk land heeft verschillende mentaliteiten (nee, niet anders dan Belgie), maar het is een psychologische wet om een groter onderscheid te maken in eigen groep (heterogeniteiten te zien) en de andere groep als homogeen te ervaren. Een gekend voorbeeld is bv dat blanken slecht zwarte mensen kunnen herkennen, wij kunnen slecht verschillen tussen hen zien, maar grote verschillen tussen blanken. En spreek aub een beetje deftig Vlaams: gekoppeld IS en mosselen met frietEN. "Zit" is hollandse straattaal, tiens ik dacht dat Vlaams niet mocht omdat het dialect zou zijn? En frieten zijn v*domme onze eigen uitvinding. Weet je hoe de term "friet" is ontstaan? Dat is Nederland die de Vlaamse taal steelt op heterdaad betrapt, maar het tracht te ontkennen en verbergen. Ja geloof me of niet, Nederland spreekt momenteel en masse ons chique Vlaams (Vlaams bestaat dus wel en is wel een taal). Nederlands is patat, dat ze 100den jaren geleden foutief van Belgie hebben overgenomen (patat in heel de wereld betekent patat zoals in BE), evenals ze "fiets" foutief van Duitsland hebben overgenomen. Nederland hoort de klokken altijd ergens luiden. Jij kent Nederland absoluut niet, Jan. Hun ware identiteit is pretentieus en vals zijn. Enfin, "op een dag" hebben ze in de spiegel van Belgie gezien dat ze tuttig zijn en een wereldvreemd buitenbeentje, zonder cultuur. (Ze zijn nu nog altijd met dit proces bezig.) Hebben ze met de rechterhand en openlijk een diepe minachting voor en verafschuwen ze BE ten zeerste en zonder gene...met de linkerhand, verborgen en ontkend zijn ze stikjaloers op BE, en dit nu juist op de klasse, het Romaanse en de (rijke) cultuur van Belgie, kortom op al hetgeen Belgie nu juist exact onderscheidt van Nederland en op alles wat Ned mist. Samenvattend: Romaanse grondslag, wat we tegenwoordig cultuur noemen. Vergeet niet dat het Romeinse Rijk voor de eerste maal civilisatie aan Europa gaf, de grondslag van onze cultuur is en dat "Nederland" hier niet bij "zat", nog niet eens op de wereldkaart voorkwam. Deze twee factoren (rechter- en linkerhand) samen maken: afgunst. Dat is wat je als Belg over Nederland moet weten, dat is de fundamentele verhouding van Ned tegenover BE. En waarom moet je dat als Belg weten? Omdat Nederland hier BE ernstige schade mee berokkent, doelbewust. Op een dag dus zijn ze "frieten" van Belgie gaan overnemen, in feite niet overnemen maar afpakken omdat Nederland geen verschillen tussen BE en Nl kan verdragen en zich alle Belgische dingen als zijnde Nederlands aanmeet, maar omdat "frieten" te Belgisch klinkt en de truc te doorzichtig geweest zou zijn, is het op "friet" blijven steken: op heterdaad betrapt dus te midden van de steel-geste. Nederland heeft niet voor niets de term "internationale allure" uitgevonden. En deze internationale allure begint bij het Romaanse Belgie. En het is dit wat Nederland absoluut niet kan verdragen. En het is daarmee dat zij bv een van Belgie's grootste separatisten zijn - en dit t.a.v. een buitenland! Nederland steelt alles van BE, Jan. Zelfs de existentie van BE kunnen ze niet verdragen.

I think the way Brel pronounces Dutch is wonderful and there is something very melancholic about a French speaking Netherlander, singing in his people’s original language about his love for his country. By the way did you know that French comes from Frankish, which is Old Dutch? The Flemish are the Franks of King Clovis who gave France its name. French, though mostly Latin, still has some 10% originating from the old Dutch or Franconian King Clovis, born in Doornik, spoke in his court in Paris in around 500. There would be no French if not for the Flemish.

Brel is certainly nog a French speaking Netherlander but a French speaking Flemish. The Belgian history is a very complicated one, one no stranger can understand. No wonder the Words of this song are so beautiful and so rich: Dutch is a very rich language. The Dutch dictionary is the largest monolingual dictionary in the world. It is impossible to say Dutch is not a interesting linguage unless you don’t know/speak it.

Brell is superb: Not singing about a region at all! But showing respect where his was grown. It could be where ever in the world! He doesn't sing "only" about Flanders..he sings all those, being proud about their places we ware born all over the world... remembering "being" a kid.. taking it as "who cares?" Brell "did care"! Gelieve mij geen woorden in de mond te leggen zoals volgens "mijn logica". Ik wou slechts aantonen dat België wel degelijk een voorgeschiedenis heeft voor 1830. Dat o.a. de taal toen niet gesproken werd weet ik ook maar al te goed en dat het gebied een groter deel dan het huidige België besloeg ook.
