Jacques Cousteau The Inventor of Scuba Diving

I used to watch his shows on tv as a young boy. Thanks to him the world became aware that there is a whole other "world" under the water's surface. His shows were very educational.

Jacques was the reason I took up diving. I read the silent world at the age of 12 (1967) and was totally fascinated, but I was 21 when I saw an invitation to try diving with the BSAC at a local swimming pool. After that, I was hooked. I trained with the club in Tunbridge Wells, UK and stayed with them for 19 years ending up as the club's diving officer. We dived all over the UK as well as Malta, Greece, Egypt and Israel. Great times and memories. Jacques other legacy was to saturation diving which was chronicled through National Geographic magazine in the early 1960's. Well worth checking out. The editorial and pictures are fantastic; he was a great pioneer.

Captain Cousteau was a great inspiration to me and inspired me to become a SCUBA Diver when I was a teenager. And now I have a 21 year old daughter who I had trained in SCUBA and we can dive together. I had the opportunity to personally meet Captain Cousteau on two occasions, and become a friend of his son Jean-Michel Cousteau and some members of his team. For several years I was Senior Nutritionist for Shaklee Corporation, a company that also developed and marketed (still to this day), biodegradable cleaning products, some of which were used to clean Cousteau's ship, Calypso. The company also was a sponsor of the Cousteau Society. I myself became a Founding Year Member of the Cousteau Society. I have almost every book he and his team published in my home library and have a large model of Calypso in my home living room. So you can see, his early inspiration to me when I was in High School has had a lasting affect on my life. I am sure his inspiration has also carried on in the lives of many others from the generation when he was most famous, and who still SCUBA Dive today.

Without Jacques Cousteau there would be no recreational dive industry today! The equipment wouldn't exist , and there wouldn't be the millions of divers that started scuba diving after sitting for hours being educated and memorized by his TV shows. What Is there today to equal his show.Just read the comments here and you'll understand the importance of this great man, I've been places and seen things that had it not been for Jacques Cousteau I wouldn't have gone there or seen those things. Thank you Jacques Cousteau for a richer life...

in France when I was a kid he was just another a local legend. I realized how famous he was and respect all arround the world only recently. I was really surprised. I also realized all the discoveries he made and his legacy when diving all arroud the world. Everywhere I go diving it seams to have a link with Cousteau: Sipadan, blue hole, cetones,... all are his discoveries

I watched every show i could as a kid . Thats what i wanted to do when i grew up . Yep he was my hero and i wanted to dive just like him. I followed my dream and became a diver.

The reason I became a scuba diver was because of that show.He showed stuff of wonder on the show and I remember thinking I have to do that. Now I do. Thanks to him I can do some of the same things that he showed.

I used to watch him as a kid. I loved his stern but serene voice. I would devour every episode as it was usually on after my bedtime. But, my parents indulged me because my mother thought it might influence me to go into the sciences. I did become open water scuba certified but never persued it as a career.

Inspirational, I too used to love his weekly underwater adventures and took up diving as a hobby. I would love to see the rv calypso sail again but heard its having funding issues, hopefully one day it gets sorted.

I think we all did have that dream to be on explorations with him. Every time I SCUBA Dive their is a moment where in my mind I "hear" the theme song of The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau.

Scuba diving helped me loss 20 pounds. Go navy go pilots I met him and collaborated with him at the Virginia Beach marine biology museum . Film documentary short film silent world and oceanic and atmospheric. Pressure. HE made me want to help our planet . He pushed boundaries. Thank Jacquee

I love him. If not for him we would probably know nothing about our water world. There is no telling how many people he inspired to learn and film more. And they in turn have inspired a new generation. I recently watched a virtual underwater tour that made it seem like I was there. He would probably have been there making vr films had they been available. His series took you almost to the same point anyway.

Hans Hass was the pioneer of scuba diving, just he and Lotte used rebreathers. It was Cousteau that invented the demand valve or regulator, that made diving simpler (and safer), and allowed for deeper diving (o2 rebreathers generally limited to 10m, 30')

I can not swim! But I am fascinated with the origins of and a out scuba diving and would love to learn how to swim and learn how to scuba dive! I enjoy watching and learning about the underwater world and especially d clils of scuba diving related shows including Sea Hunt and Flipper and seeing the actors and TV stars and celebrities who were on some of these shows and who I am amazed at how much I didn't know about them but enjoyed finding out about some of their roles or interests or was surprised that they acted in these shoes and either scuba diver or learned unless they had someone doing it for them but I don't believe that they did I'm sure that for their roles that they had to learn to swim if they didn't know how to already but I'm sure that they enjoyed it and I'm sure that they made memories of being in those roles and I hope that they made a hobby out of it because I find it to be fascinating I can't swim but I want to learn one of these days and hopefully pursue scuba diving if I don't get too old for it but I guess like they say age is just a number!

JYC (Cousteau) was NOT the inventor of scuba diving. They were scuba divers way before his first dive. He popularized it with his documentaries and that's it. And you can't talk about the first steps of scuba diving without mentioning the names of Beuchat, Emile Gagnan, Colonel Alinat, etc...

I used to believe in this like many other... until I found out the truth about the development of scuba. To find out that he jus was the person patented the amazing apparatus otherpeople already have invented. Taking all the credit for himself. That's how I lost the respect to this person. He has never actually invented aqualung. Smart move... as many times repeatedly have happened in the history.
